  • The present study was motivated by increasing demands on quantitative measurements of the heat flux through the water cooling and quenching process of hot steel. The local heat flux measurements are employed by a novel experimental technique that has a function of high-temperature heat flux gauge in which test block assemblies are directly used to measure the heat flux variation during water cooling and quenching of hot steel. The heat flux can be directly achieved by Fourier's law and is also compared with numerical estimation which is solved by inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP). The high-temperature heat flux gauge developed in this study can be applicable to measure cooling rate and history during the actual cooling applications of steelmaking process. In addition, the measurement uncertainty of heat flux is calculated by a quantitative uncertainty analysis which is based on the ANSI/ASME PTC 19.1-2005 standard.

  • A new test method has been developed for a quantitative evaluation of macro-stickies in recycled pulps. The method uses a fine slot screen to separate a sticky particles form fiber in the pulp samples. The obtained sticky particles were spread on filter paper and covered with silicon carbide powder in order to make the stickies area with sufficient contrast between stickies and background. The stickies are then counted by a scanner-based image analysis system. The validity of this evaluation method of stickies of KOCC, ONP and white ledger wastepaper recycling plants respectively. It is shown that this method can be applied for a quantitative determination of stickies content in various recycled pulp samples. With this testing method, reproducible and reliable data were obtained for the actual mill pulp samples.

  • Robust tracking controller of optical disk drive(ODD) is designed using quantitative feedback theory(QFT). Nominal plant model is identified from real system through modal test. Uncertainties and control performance of tracking servo are specified, and robust controller satisfying these specifications is designed in the QFT framework. To verify the performances of designed controller, experiment are performed in a digital signal processor(DSP) environment, and experimental results are compared with simulations.

  • The most usually adopted methods from the collection of samples laboratory procedures, to basic analysis of assemblages for the quantitative study of benthic foraminifera are reviewed. Standard methods of treatment of sampleswith emphasis on the effective detection of contamination through routine dip of sieved into Methylene Blue solution after every washing of samples are proposed to minimize differences due to individuals and for comparisons of results in future. Some basic characteristics for the quantitative analyses are also reviewed with appropriate examples. These characteristics are related to toraminiferal abundance, wall structures, condition of test conservation, diversity and related characteristics, faunal similarith between samples, and occurrence of planktonic foraminifera.

  • A solid phase extraction (SPE) method was optimized for the quantitative analysis of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in serum using hydrophilic-lipophilic balance SPE and LC-MS/MS. Fetal bovine serums spiked with $^{13}C_8$-PFOA before or after SPE were used as test samples for evaluation of the SPE efficiency. Simultaneous evaluation of matrix effects and absolute SPE recovery for $^{13}C_8$-PFOA in serum using different sample pre-treatments and SPE conditions allowed optimization of SPE process efficiency with minimal matrix effect and decent SPE recovery. Introduction of protein precipitation as a sample pre-treatment procedure for serum samples before SPE generally decreased matrix effect in LC-MS/MS analysis and provided more stable recovery of PFOA.

  • The new algorithm was proposed to quantify symmetry recorded in convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns and symmetry mapping. The proposed algorithm is based on the normalized cross-correlation coefficient (${\gamma}$) for quantifying the amount of symmetry in a CBED pattern. The quantification and mapping procedures are automatically controlled by the script implemented in Gatan Digital Micrograph$^{(c)}$. We apply the quantitative CBED measurement to a strained Si sample to test the sensitivity to defects.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender differences in conversational styles of students. This research based on Quantitative survey and qualitative observation. The quantitative data were collected by questionnaire from 708 respondents who were college students and resided in Sunchon. Statistical methods for the data analysis were frequencies, t-test. The cases of observation were 21. As a result, gender differences were founded in lots of conversational styles. Women showed more tendencies than men In communi-cations to listen, to make relationships, to take care of others, to express intimacy and to make private conversation. Men tended to dominate others, to show off capacities and to make public conversation. This gender differences in conversational styles were related to sex role and major studies. From this results it was proposed that education on gender differences in conversational styles should be developed for students to improve their communication skills and to adapt their changing sex role.

  • For the quantitative investigation of the erosion of MgO layers in real ac-PDP cells, we constructed a microscopic spectrophotometer which is capable of measuring transmission spectra from the area as small as 20 ${\times}$ 20 ${\mu}m^2$. In the test on the sputtered MgO films with a thickness gradient, we were able to probe the thickness variation of 1000 nm over $1000-{\mu}m$ distance. Using this instrument, we were able to determine not only the erosion rate at the particular position of ac-PDP cells but also the relative erosion rate at different positions in a single ac-PDP cell.

  • Three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) models were developed for 67 molecules of 2-amino-benzothiazole-6-anilide derivatives against lymphocyte-specific protein tyrosine kinase (P56 LCK). The molecular field analysis (MFA) and receptor surface analysis (RSA) were employed for QSAR studies and the predictive ability of the model was validated by 15 test set molecules. Structure-based investigations using molecular docking simulation were performed with the crystal structure of P56 LCK. Good correlation between predicted fitness scores versus observed activities was demonstrated. The results suggested that the nature of substitutions at the 2-amino and 6-anilide positions were crucial in enhancing the activity, thereby providing new guidelines for the design of novel P56 LCK inhibitors.
