  • Canine Subcorneal pustular dermatosis (CSPD) represents a sterile, superficial, pustular skin disease of unknown cause but may be a variant of pemphigus foliaceus. A 7-year-old, intact female, mixed dog presented with 3-month history of pruritic multiple pustules and crusts. Direct smears from intact pustules revealed numerous nondegenerate neutrophils, some acantholytic cells, and bacterial culture was negative. Histologic examination of lesional skin showed subcorneal pustules filled with neutrophils and acantholytic cells. The direct immunofluorescence tests stained with IgG, IgA, IgM, C3 were negative. Oral administration of dapsone (1 mg/kg/q8h) was initiated and it was reduced to 1 mg/kg/q12h with good control of the lesions.

  • An American Cocker Spaniel (3-year-old, intact female, 6.0 kg) was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University for evaluation of pustules and crusts in the periocular region, dorsal and ventral region of the trunk, and digits. Complete blood count (CBC) revealed leukocytosis with mature neutrophilia, and a serum biochemistry profile revealed hypoalbuminemia. Tape strip tests identified numerous neutrophils and acatholytic cells. Histopathology identified intraepithelial pustules with neutrophils and acantholytic keratinocytes. Definitive diagnosis of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) was made by direct immunofluorescence (DIF) test with goat anti-canine IgG antibody. The human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) was administered at a rate of 15 ml/h over 6 hours for 4 days. After that, the dog was maintained on prednisolone (2.2 mg/kg, PO, SID) and azathioprine (2.0 m/kg, PO, SID). An infusion of IVIG (0.5 g/kg) was repeated 3 days after 4 weeks. After 10 weeks, the dog showed the remarkable regression of lesions.

  • Acne is a relatively common disorder, especially in the adolescent or 20-30th young people. The condition is characterized by comedones, papules and pustules. Acne has social and psychological influence on the acne patients. But there is no perfect treatment of acne. It is known that Herba Houttuyniae has anti-inflammatory action and anti-bacterial action. Therefore, we studied the effect of 5% Herba Houttuyniae extract solution on the acne. The study was designed to compare the efficacy of 5% Herba Houttuyniae solution on the acne. The study was carried out on two groups-a experimental and a control group- for 4 weeks. Efficacy was determined by investigating counts of non-inflammatory open and closed comedones, and inflammatory papules and pustules once a week. After a experiment self-assessment was checked. As the result of the study, we found that a significant difference was observed in the mean counts and self-assessment of the experimental group. So we concluded that Herba Houttuyniae has a clinical effect on the acne.

  • Infection effect of $Nosema$ $bombyics$ on the midgut of silkworm $Bombyx$ $mori$ and subsequent appearance of spores and the performance of larvae was studied. Autopsy of larvae showed white pustules on the surface of midgut at 5 days of post infection (pi). At later stage, important organs like midgut, silk gland and gonads reduced in size and all these organs showed white pustules. Light microscope observation of pustules revealed enormous spores. Spore multiplication was at a faster rate in young larvae. Infection of the adult larvae resulted in pebrinized pupa and moths. Larval weight, cocoon weight and cocoon shell ratio reduced as the post infection period increased. Transverse sections of midgut showed $N.$ $bombycis$ infection limited to a few columnar cells at 3-5 days of pi. At 7 days pi, cell volume increased, cells were swollen and elongated. Heavily infected cells looked like sacks filled with parasite and the apical region of certain cells were bulging into the gut lumen. Later at 8-9 days of pi, spores or its developing stages leaked into the lumen either freely or enclosed within the globules of host cytoplasm. Besides columnar cells, development of $N.$ $bombycis$ was observed in the regenerative cells and rarely in goblet cells. Development of $N.$ $bombycis$ was also observed in both longitudinal and circular muscles at the late pi period. The histopathological changes, deformities and spore production time in the host were all influenced by the spore dosage and age of the host.

  • In recent years, the occurrence of bacterial diseases of soybean has been increasing due to the continuous rise in spring temperature and the humid weather as a result of rain concentrated at the middle and late stages of crop growth. The resulting severe economic damage is also a concern. Unfortunately, there are no precise data on the occurrence and damage to lay the foundation for bacterial disease control in soybean in the Chungbuk Province. Therefore, the present study investigated the occurrence of major bacterial diseases, namely bacterial pustules, bacterial blight, and wildfire, in different soybean varieties in 410 fields in the Chungbuk Province in 2017. The incidence rate of bacterial pustules in the affected fields was 76.6%, and the incidence rate of infected plants was 29.3%. The incidence rate of bacterial blight in the affected fields was 13.9%, and the incidence rate of infected plants was 4.6%. The incidence rate of wildfire in the affected fields was 23.2%, and the incidence rate of infected plants was 10.1%. The overall incidence rate of bacterial diseases in the soybean fields where the diseases originated was 37.9% for bacterial pustules, 21.0% for bacterial blight, and 25.0% for wildfire, indicating that the disease incidence rate in fields where the disease originated was generally high. Among different varieties, the incidence rate of bacterial pustules was the highest in sprout soybean (88.9%), followed by Seoritae (84.0%) and Daewon (81.2%). The incidence rate of bacterial blight was the highest in the Daewon (19.6%), followed by Seoritae (15.2%) and sprout soybean (12.5%). The incidence rate of wildfire was the highest in sprout soybean (25.0%), followed by Daewon (24.7%) and Seoritae (5.4%). Meanwhile, in Uram, the incidence rate of bacterial pustules (7.1%) was the lowest, and this variety was not affected by bacterial blight or wildfire.

  • Anthracnose of tea tree, Camellia sinensis, occurred severely at tea plantation of Boseung, Chonnam. Irregular, dark brown spots appeared on tips and margins of mature leaves in early stage. As the disease progresses, the lesions were covered with numerous, small, black, slightly raised pustules (acervuli). The causal fungus of anthracnose was identified as Colletotrichum theae-sinensis (Miyake) Yamamoto. Symptoms by C. theae-sinensis appeared around 20 days after artificial inoculation.

  • A 3-year-old, intact female Poong-san dog was presented with a 4-month history of erosive, erythematous dermatitis unresponsive to systemic antibiotics and glucocorticoids. Crust, erosion, and alopecia were noted on the ear pinnae, bridge of nose, and forelimb. Cytological evaluation of intact pustules showed isolated free-floating rounded acantholytic keratinocytes admixed with non-degenerated neutrophils and eosinophils. Results of histopathologic examination revealed the intra-epidermal pustules with predominant neutrophils, less eosinophils, and isolated and clustered acantholytic cells. A diagnosis of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) was made based on the history, clinical, cytological and histopathological results. The skin lesions had improved after systemic cyclosporine therapy. This case report demonstrates that cyclosporine, an immunosuppressive agent, can be used in the management of PF in dogs.
