Bonding strength of a thermal sprayed coating is difficult to measure using a conventional pull-off test method. Scratch test is a potential alternative testing method. An adhesive and a cohesive bond strength of the coating can be measured by the pull-off test while the scratch test performed on the cross-section of the thermal sprayed coating can only demonstrate the cohesive bond strength of the coating. Nevertheless, it is still beneficial to perform the scratch testing on the cross-section of the coating for the sake of comparison thus providing an alternative to the pull-off test. The scratch test method can reduce testing time and cost in the long run due to a significant cost reduction in consumables and energy and time saving from the curing step of the glue used in the pull-off test. This research investigates the possibility of using the scratch test to measure the cohesive bond strength of Mo/NiCrBSi composite coating. The results from the pull-off test and the scratch test indicate that the cohesive bond strengths of the Mo composite coating show similar trend and that the cohesive bond strength are increased when increasing NiCrBSi content.

Pull-off test is widely used to evaluate bond performance between concrete and FRP composite. However, reliability of experiment result declines due to many difference between test methods of each national standards. This study analyzed problems of various existing test methods for pull-off test and suggested standardized test method. In addition, since tensile strength of concrete is smaller than bond strength of epoxy resin, maximum bond strength of epoxy resin shall be limited within tensile strength of concrete. Alternative testing method, therefore, which decrease FRP adhesion areas than concrete adhesion areas is suggested to widen test range of bond strength in pull-off test. In the experimental results, bond performance can be estimated up to two times of tensile strength of concrete by reducing FRP adhesion areas by 1/3.

The development and maintenance of a sound bond are essential requirements of concrete repair and replacement. The bond property of a overlay to its substrate concrete during the lifetime is one of the most important performance requirements which should be quantified. A standard or a verified bond strength measurement method is required at field for screening, selecting materials and quality control for overlay or repair materials, but no test method has been adopted as a standard. In this study, a concrete pull off bond strength measurement method for field application is proposed and evaluated. This study compares the splitting tensile test, slant shear test, nipple pipe direct tensile test, flexural adhesion test, briquette tensile test, jumbo nail pull-out test and core pull-off test with their test procedures. From these comparison and investigation, core pull-off test is selected as a main topic of this study because of it's suitability for in situ testing, simplicities in field application and clearness at interface boundary condition. Thus, the proposed core pull off test is evaluated to be the most appropriate method for field application in a simple manner. The fracture surface and fracture mode could be easily determined by visual observation of failure surface of the field specimen. The core pull off test was found to be sensitive to surface condition and latex contents at latex modified concrete.

Purpose. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent cyclic load affects the screwless implant-abutment connection for Morse taper dental implants. Materials and Methods. 16 implants (SICvantage max) and 16 abutments (Swiss Cross) were used. The screwless implant-abutment connection was subjected to 10,000 cycles of axial loading with a maximum force of 120 N. For the pull-off testing, before and after the same cyclic loading, the required force for disconnecting the remaining 6 implant-abutment connections was measured. The surface of 10 abutments was examined using a scanning electron microscope 120× before and after loading. Results. The pull-off test showed a significant decrease in the vertical force required to pull the abutment from the implant with mean 229.39 N ± 18.23 before loading, and 204.30 N ± 13.51 after loading (P<.01). Apart from the appearance of polished surface areas and slight signs of wear, no visible damages were found on the abutments. Conclusion. The deformation on the polished abutment surface might represent the result of micro movements within the implant-abutment connection during loading. Although there was a decrease of the pull-off force values after cyclic loading, this might not have a notable effect on the clinical performance.
This paper aims at examining the effects of sustained load and elevated temperature on the time-dependent deformation of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets bonded to concrete as well as the pull-off strength of single-lap shear specimens after the sustained loading period using digital images. Elevated temperature during the sustained loading period resulted in increased slip of the CFRP composites, whereas increased curing time of the polymer resin prior to the sustained loading period resulted in reduced slip. Pull-off tests conducted after sustained loading period showed that the presence of sustained load resulted in increased pull-off strength and interfacial fracture energy. This beneficial effect decreased with increased creep duration. Based on analysis of digital images, results on strain distributions and fracture surfaces indicated that stress relaxation of the epoxy occurred in the 30 mm closest to the loaded end of the CFRP composites during sustained loading, which increased the pull-off strength provided the failure locus remained mostly in the concrete. For longer sustained loading duration, the failure mode of concrete-CFRP bond region can change from a cohesive failure in the concrete to an interfacial failure along the concrete/epoxy interface, which diminished part of the strength increase due to the stress relaxation of the adhesive.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate Ti-base abutment's three different heights and three different cement types on the pull-off force of zirconia-based restorations. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 fixture lab analogs were embedded in auto polymerizing resin bloack. 90 Ti-base abutments heights of 3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm were scanned and zirconia restoration were prepared from scanned files. Zirconia restoration were cemented with three different types of cements (temporary, semi-permanent, permanent) following manufacturer's instructions. All 90 specimens were placed and tested in a universal testing machine for pull-out testing. Retention was measured by recording the force at load drop. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test for detecting whether there are any statistical significance along cement types or abutment heights. After that, Mann-Whitney test was used for figuring out differences regarding abutment height and the comparison between 3 cements. Results: Temp bond showed significantly lower pull-off force compared to Fujicem regardless of any abutment height. However, there were significant differences between Cem-implant and Fujicem in abutment height of 3 mm and 7 mm, but there was no significant difference in 5 mm. Temp bond and Cem-implant had significant differences only in abutment height of 5 mm. Conclusion: Although Ti-base abutment height did not influenced zirconia restorations' retentiveness, cement types showed significant differences.
To determine the pure bond strength between substrate and its overlayed concrete material, a direct pull-off test method was introduced by using a bi-material cylinder with which a penny-shaped crack was mountained at its interface. First, to evaluate the stress magnification or concentration at the interface, the energy release rates of a penny-shaped interface crack in remote tension loading on a bi-material cylinder were determined in terms of different modulus ratios and undonded area ratios(crack ratios) using a commercial finite element program. Then the energy release rates were calibrated as non-dimensional values in consideration of structural dimensions and applied forces. And to evaluate whether this new pull-off test method gives sound test results, three different sizes of unbended area ratios were incorporated along their interface in bi-material cylinders(sulphur polymer concrete + old concrete). Test results showed that all specimens were broken off at their interfaces as intended. Also the FEM analyses and test results indicated that a bi-material specimen with unbended area ratio of 0.4$\sim$0.6 is suitable for best accurate testing.
The corrosion resistance of epoxy-coated carbon steel was evaluated. The carbon steel surface was subjected to different treatment methods such as steel grit blasting with different size, steel shot ball blasting and power tool treatment. To study the effect of the treatments, the topology of the treated surface was observed by optical 3D microscopy and a pull-off adhesion test was conducted. The corrosion resistance of the epoxy-coated carbon steel was further examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) combined with hygrothermal cyclic testing. The results of EIS indicated that the epoxy-coated carbon steel treated with steel grit blasting showed an improved corrosion resistance compared to untreated epoxy-coated surfaces or surfaces subjected to shot ball blasting and power tool treatments.

PURPOSES : The main purpose of this study is suggest of field bond strength evaluation method for more objective evaluation method through Evaluation of Bond Strength Properties with changing aspect ratio and temperature. METHODS : The evaluation is laboratory bond strength test. Using the core machine, the pull-off test method ; the bond strength test of interface layer the universal testing machine. RESULTS : As a result of the laboratory bond strength evaluation, it was verified that the bond strength by aspect ratio decreases linearly with increasing aspect ratio and the bond strength properties by temperature change existed at high and low temperature condition relative to odinary temperature condition. CONCLUSIONS : According to the results of laboratory bond strength evaluation, the field bond strength evaluation results suggest applying the proposed correction factor (0.8, 1.0, 1.4, 1.9) according to aspect ratio(0.5, 0.1, 1.5, 2.0), For more objective evaluation of the bond strength, it is analyzed that the evaluation value is within $6{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ and the result can be obtained within 5% of the coefficient of variation.
PURPOSES: The performance of tack coat, commonly used for layer interface bonding, is affected by application rate and curing time. In this study, bonding strength tests were performed according to the application rate and curing time of asphalt emulsion. Based on finding from this study, optimum application rates and curing times are proposed. METHODS: In order to investigate bonding characteristic of asphalt emulsion, tests were performed on both asphalt concrete pavement and portland concrete pavement. Also, asphalt emulsions were tested at the application rate of 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and $0.8{\ell}/m^2$ and at the curing time of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 24 hours. Pull-off test and shear bonding strength test, which commonly used for bonding strength measurement of asphalt emulsion, were adopted for this study. To assess field performance under different testing condition, asphalt emulsions were applied to in-service pavement. Throughout coefficient of determination analysis between material index properties from asphalt emulsion and mechanical response from bonding strength tests, performance correlativity was analyzed. RESULTS: Test results show that optimum application rate for asphalt overlay on asphalt concrete pavement (AOA) and asphalt overlay on concrete pavement (AOC) was $0.4{\sim}0.5{\ell}/m^2$ and $0.3{\sim}0.5{\ell}/m^2$, respectively. According to the curing time increment, tensile strength and shear strength of AOC were increased to 22~44% and 20~39%, respectively. AOA case also show strength increment in tensile strength (42%) and shear strength (9%). We tested the applicability of tack coat materials at the field sites, and our findings demonstrated that the bonding (for D and E) and rapid curing (for B, C, and D, E) performances were superior than others. Among material index properties, there was a high correlation between penetration ratio and bonding strength test result. CONCLUSIONS : Result show that interlayer bonding strength was affected by asphalt emulsion type, application rate and curing time. AOC required slightly higher application ($0.1{\ell}/m^2$) than AOA. Both AOA and AOC cases show higher strength at longer curing time. Up to 2hours of curing, rapid strength increments were observed, but strength increment ratio was decreased after 2hours of curing. From the observed correlation between penetration ratio and bonding strength, it is expected that penetration ratio can be used as one of important factors affecting bonding strength analysis.
