  • In this paper, we introduce a recursively-defined natural join operation as well as well-known object composition operations (union, intersection) for composing CAD database objects. Then, we will discuss how to realize these operations by the message passing computing mechanism. Next, we will discuss what kind of behaviours (methods) are preserved under our natural join operations. Finally, we investigate mathematical properties about the relationships among several object composition operations (natural join, union and intersection).

  • Given the importance of algebra in the early grades, this paper analyzed the contents of whole numbers and their operations from the perspectives of generalized arithmetic. In particular, the focus of analysis was given to the properties of 0 and 1, those of operations such as commutativity, associativity, and distributivity, and the relations between operations. As such, this paper analyzed in detail how such properties and relations were introduced and expanded across different grades. It is expected that many issues in this paper will serve basic information to develop instructional materials in a way to fostering students' algebraic thinking in the elementary grades.

  • The ability of understanding the number and number systems, grasping the properties of number systems, and manipulating number systems is the foundation to understand algebra. It is useful to deepen students' mathematical understanding of number systems and operations. The authentic understanding of numbers and operations can make it possible for the students to manipulate algebraic symbols, to represent relationship among sets of numbers, and to use variables to investigate the properties of sets of numbers. The high school students need to understand the number systems from more abstract perspective. The purpose of this study is to study on understanding and application ability of eleventh graders of basic properties of operations with real numbers.

  • This paper discusses algorithmic properties of a class of complementarity programs involving strictly diagonally isotone and off-diagonally isotone functions, i. e., functions whose Jacobian matrices have positive diagonal elements and nonnegative off-diagonal elements, A typical traffic equilibrium under elastic demands is cast into this class. Algorithmic properties of these complementarity problems, when a Jacobi-type iteration is applied, are investigated. It is shown that with a properly chosen starting point the generated sequence are decomposed into two converging monotonic subsequences. This and related will be useful in developing solution procedures for this class of complementarity problems.

  • This paper considers the simultaneously firing model for the artillery operations. The objective of this paper is to find the optimal fire sequence minimizing the final completion time of the firing missions of multiple artillery units for multiple targets. In the problem analysis, we derive several solution properties to reduce the solution space. Moreover, two lower bounds of objective are derived and tested along with the derived properties within a branch-and-bound scheme. Two efficient heuristic algorithms are also developed. The overall performances of the proposed branch-and-bound and heuristic algorithms are evaluated through various numerical experiments.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study new notions of stochastic comparisons and ageing classes based on the total time on test transform order. We give relationships to other stochastic orders and aging classes given previously. Several preservation properties under the reliability operations of random minima and series system are given.

  • Generalized intuitionistic fuzzy soft set theory, proposed by Park et al. [Journal of Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems 21(3) (2011) 389-394], has been regarded as an effective mathematical tool to deal with uncertainties. In this paper, we prove that certain De Margan's law hold in generalized intuitionistic fuzzy soft set theory with respect to union and intersection operations on generalized intuitionistic fuzzy soft sets. We discuss the basic properties of operations on generalized intuitionistic fuzzy soft sets such as necessity and possibility. Moreover, we illustrate their interconnections between each other.

  • This study investigated the elementary school students' ability on the algebraic reasoning as generalized arithmetic. It analyzed the written responses from 648 second graders, 688 fourth graders, and 751 sixth graders using tests probing their understanding of the properties of whole number operations. The result of this study showed that many students did not recognize the properties of operations in the problem situations, and had difficulties in applying such properties to solve the problems. Even lower graders were quite successful in using the commutative law both in addition and subtraction. However they had difficulties in using the associative and the distributive law. These difficulties remained even for upper graders. As for the associative and the distributive law, students had more difficulties in solving the problems dealing with specific numbers than those of arbitrary numbers. Given these results, this paper includes issues and implications on how to foster early algebraic reasoning ability in the elementary school.
