  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the present condition of drug abuse and its association with depression, self-rated health and health behaviors by job status in Korean adults. Methods: Data were derived from the study on four addiction problem and suicide in 2014. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze patterns of drug abuse according to depression, self-rated health and health behaviors. Results: The prevalence of drug abuse during the past year was 17.1% of the 4,018 subjects. About 3.3 times risk for drug abuse was found among individuals who had high depression scores. The risk of drug abuse was higher among those who were smoking (OR:1.46, 95% CI:1.17~1.83), drinking more frequently (OR:1.30, 95% CI:1.07~1.58), sleeping insufficiently (OR:1.31, 95% CI:1.03~1.67), eating irregularly (OR:1.45, 95% CI:1.19~1.76). Drug abuse problem was detected more seriously among employed than unemployed adults. Conclusion: Health-related behaviors, such as smoking, drinking, sleeping, eating should be considered simultaneously when designing strategies to deal with drug abuse problem, and it is important to understand the interaction between drug abuse and mental health. Furthermore, workplace based intervention can be effective in solving drug abuse problem.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions and causes of the problem behaviors of Korean Chinese'left-behind'children in China in order to propose a support system to prevent problem behaviors of them. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 399 children who attend at three Korean Chines schools in Yonbian in China. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, internalizing problem behavior, social support, self-esteem, and self-resilience. This paper analysed the survey data by employing one-way ANOVA and a structural equation modeling. It verified if there is significant difference in internalizing problem behaviour, self-esteem, self-resilience, and social support between left-behind children's group and non left-behind children's group. It also identified a structural causal relationship and direct or indirect effects among problematic behaviour, self-esteem, self-resilience, and social support. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, there was a statistically significant difference in the social withdrawal and depression of internalizing problem behaviors between left-behind children's group and non left-behind children's group. Second, the left-behind children's group showed no significant difference in self-resilience and social support compared to non left-behind children's group, but showed a significant difference in self-esteem. In the positive self- esteem factor, non left-behind children's group showed much higher score whereas left-behind children's group was higher in the negative self-esteem factor. Third, social support for left-behind children's group has a statistically significant direct negative effect on internalizing problem behaviors, and indirectly negative effects on problem behavior through self-resilience. These results suggest the necessity of establishing a social support system for mitigating and preventing problem behaviors and the necessity of preparing measures to improve self-resilience. Based on the results of the study, we discussed how to establish a social support system in China to mitigate internalizing problem behaviors of Korean Chinese left-behind children.

  • This study investigated small group processes in paired think-aloud problem solving. Two high school chemistry classes were assigned to St-SL group (using Strategy-Solve Listener) and SL group (Solver Listener), and their small-group behaviors were audio/video taped. Verbal behaviors of solver and listener in respect to 4 problem-solving stages and performance levels at each stage were analyzed. At the understanding stage, listeners in the St-SL group exhibited more behaviors of agreement to solver's understanding processes about given and goal of problem. As regards recalling a related law at the planning stage, solvers in the St-SL group exhibited more behaviors of modification based on listener's questions or pointing out. These verbal interactions seemed to have a positive effect on students' deriving the physical quantity with the proper laws. Few in both SL and St-SL groups exhibited the behaviors regarding setting up subgoals. No verbal behavior was observed in the SL group at the reviewing stage, and solvers in the St-SL group tended to ask for listener's agreement. However, only few performed the strategy explaining the meaning of answer at the molecular level correctly through the interactions. The St-SL group perceived that the understanding stage was the most helpful and that the planning or reviewing stages were difficult to apply.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the main and interaction effects of day-care experiences and maternal parenting behavior on preschoolers' externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors. A total of 248 preschoolers(112 boys and 136 girls) and their mothers participated in this study. Mothers provided information about their children's day-care experiences(i.e., age of entry, hours per week, days per week, and number of day care centers attended by the preschoolers), their parenting behavior, and their children's problem behavior. Data were analyzed using correlations, multiple and hierarchical regressions, and post-hoc analysis suggested by Aiken and West(1991). First, preschoolers who frequently changed day-care centers showed higher levels of aggression. Second, maternal logical explanation, coercive and neglecting parenting behavior significantly influenced preschoolers' externalizing and internalizing problem behavior. Finally, interactions of day-care experiences and maternal parenting behavior were significant in predicting preschoolers' problem behavior. These findings suggest that day-care experiences need to be considered with other family variables in predicting preschoolers' developmental outcomes.

  • This study examined the relationships sleep habits, daytime sleepiness, and problem behaviors. A cross-sectional survey design was used. Participants were 276 adolescents. Sleep habits, daytime sleepiness and problem behavior were measured by Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Korea-Youth Self Report (K-YSR), respectively. Data were collected from July to August, 2014 using self-reported questionnaires. Participants were middle school students, perceived their sleep time as enough and their sleep quality as good, have no problem behavior during sleep, and have no caffeinated drink for last a week were more likely to have higher score of sleep hygiene. Sleep habits score was associated negatively with daytime sleepiness and problem behaviors. Sleep impacts on physical growth, behavior, and emotional development of adolescent. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a sleep enhancement program for the good sleep habits of the adolescents, and to make efforts at home and school.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the problem behavior and its convergent factors in out-of-school adolescents, with a focus on gender differences. This study was a secondary data analysis study using out-of-school adolescents research data at Busan women and family development institute. The study was conducted in a total of 499 out-of-school adolescents (337 males, 162 females). The type of the 8 problem behaviors (run away from home, drop out, prostitution, violence, internet game addiction, theft, drug addiction, and smoking) were identified. The collected data were analyzed with multiple logistic regression. Among the problem behaviors of the participants, internet game addiction and theft were more significantly high in male out-of-school adolescents than female out-of-school adolescents. In internet game addiction, male out-of-school adolescents were 1.90 times higher than female out-of-school adolescents (p=.008, 95% CI=1.18-3.06). In theft, male out-of-school adolescents were 1.92 times higher than female out-of-school adolescents (p=.006, 95% CI=1.21-3.03). When the social measures were provided for those adolescents, a distinguished approach is required depending on the problem behavior and gender.
