  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of postoptimality analysis that can be applied to an optimal solution of a maximum flow problem. We first use the transformed network corresponding to a given network. In such a network we conduct postoptimality analysis by determining changes in the optimal solution precipitated by changes in the capacity as the arc capacity varies from 0 to infinite. By this method we can easily calculate not only the characteristic region where the given optimal solution remains unchanged, but also the characteristic region where the value of the maximal flow gradually increases or decreases. The proposed method is demonstrated by numerical example.

  • Serpentine belt drive system offers the advantages of light weigh, low cost, quientness, and efficiency. Since these belts are typically longer than conventional belts, a tensioner component is added to maintain acceptable belt tension levels and make no slippage between pulleys and belts. This paper addresses the modeling and analysis of the automotive belt drive systems and also addresses the predicton of slippage on rotational modes. Vibration characteristics are determined from the eigenvalue problem governing the free response. Under certain engine operating conditions, the dynamic tension fluctuations may be sufficient to cause the belt to slip on particular accessory pulleys, It is found that this slippage can be reduced by adding the tensioner component from the analysis of belt tension and belt compression.

  • In the field of structural analysis so-called substructure methods have been applied extensively to solve large and complex structures by splitting them up in substructures. This substructure method is applicable to electromagnetic field analysis and highly parallel in nature. In this paper substructure FEM is implemented for magnetostatic field computation using parallel computer consists of many transputers. Parallel substructure method is a promising tool as a solution of not only compuation speed problem but also memory problem.

  • Recently, mathematical modeling has been attractive in that it could be one of many efforts to improve students' thinking and problem solving in mathematics education. Mathematical modeling is a non-linear process that involves elements of both a treated-as-real world and a mathematics world and also requires the application of mathematics to unstructured problem situations in real-life situation. This study provides analysis of literature review about modeling perspectives, case studies about mathematical modeling, and textbooks from the United States and Korea with perspective which mathematical modeling could be potential and meaningful to students even in elementary school. Further, teaching method with mathematical modeling was investigated to see the possibility of application to elementary mathematics classroom.

  • Brittle failure of rock is a classical rock mechanics problem. Rock failure not only involves initiation and propagation of single crack, but also is a complex problem associated with initiation, propagation and coalescence of many cracks. As the most important feature of rock material properties is the heterogeneity, the Weibull statistical distribution is employed in the rock failure process analysis (RFPA) method to describe the heterogeneity in rock properties. In this paper, the applications of the RFPA method in geotechnical engineering and rockburst modeling are introduced with emphasis, which can provide some references for relevant researches.

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of frictional contact problems in axisymmetric bodies using the rigid-plastic finite element method. A contact finite element method, based on a penalty function, are derived from variational formulations. The contact boundary condition between two deformable bodies is prescribed by the proposed algorithm. The program which can handle frictional contact problem is developed by using pre-existing rigid-plastic finite element code. Some examples used in this paper illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulations and algorithms. Efforts focus on the deformation patterns, contact force, and velocity gradient through the various simulations.

  • Fault current problems is considered a serious issue in the power system because large fault currents not only cause many side effects to the equipments of power system but also lead to severe problems, such as blackouts. This paper deals with the structural analysis and 3-phase fault current stability of the future Seoul metropolitan power system. The simulation composition and analysis are performed with the 4th KEPCO power supply planning data using PSS/e. Through the results of the simulations, it can be observed that the future Seoul metropolitan system results in a fault current which exceeds the circuit breaker (CB) rate. This unremovable fault current can cause critical damage to power system. To resolve the problem, the algorithm for the application of Voltage Sourced Converter Back-to-Back High Voltage Direct Current (VSC BTB HVDC) is being proposed. where the most suitable location for solving fault current problem in Seoul metropolitan area is being implemented.

  • In the sheet metal forming process, the drawbead is used to control the flow of material during the forming process. The drawbead provides proper restraining force to the material and prevents defects such as wrinkling or breakage. For these reasons, many studies for designing the effective drawbead have been conducted. In this paper, the influence of the number of drawbead during the blank forming process will be introduced. For the analysis, the numerical method called the static-explicit finite element method was used. The finite element analysis code for this method has been developed and applied to the drawbead process problems. It is expected that this static-explicit finite element method could overcome heavy computation time and convergence problem due to the increase of drawbeads.

  • For principal component analysis (PCA) to efficiently analyze large scale matrices, it is crucial to find a few singular vectors in cheaper computational cost and under lower memory requirement. To compute those in a fast and robust way, we propose a new stochastic method. Especially, we adopt the stochastic variance reduced gradient (SVRG) method [11] to avoid asymptotically slow convergence in stochastic gradient descent methods. For that purpose, we reformulate the PCA problem as a unconstrained optimization problem using a quadratic penalty. In general, increasing the penalty parameter to infinity is needed for the equivalence of the two problems. However, in this case, exact penalization is guaranteed by applying the analysis in [24]. We establish the convergence rate of the proposed method to a stationary point and numerical experiments illustrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • A study was carried out to investigate the fluid-structure interaction phenomena of buried hydrophone system that exposed complex loads due to handling, transportation and installation. The buried hydrophone system has necessarily neighborhood structures for installation. Because of the neighborhood structure, acoustic field is deformed. We analyze the piezoelectric-structural-acoustic coupled problem and the results to use a finite element analysis software, ANSYS, which has an coupled field analysis capability. The effect of the component of hydrophone system is revealed altogether in pressure distribution. So, we classify and analyze the problem by four different compositions for decomposition.
