We consider the separation problem of the rank-1 Chvatal-Gomory (C-G) inequalities for the 0-1 knapsack problem with the knapsack capacity defined by an additional binary variable, which we call the fixed-charge 0-1 knapsack problem. We analyze the structural properties of the optimal solutions to the separation problem and show that the separation problem can be solved in pseudo-polynomial time. By using the result, we also show that the existence of a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm for the separation problem of the rank-1 C-G inequalities of the ordinary 0-1 knapsack problem.
This study suggests that as receiving feedback is moved back, the effectiveness of problem-solving increases. Utilizing data from innovation contests in which a number of problem solvers compete with each other, we answer questions such as whether the order of receiving first feedback affects problem-solving effectiveness and how problem-solving experience moderates the relationship between the first feedback order and problem-solving effectiveness. Empirical results based on data collected from Kaggle, an online platform for innovation contests, showed that the order that contest participants receive the first feedback increases problem-solving effectiveness. Furthermore, the more prior experience of contest participants accentuates the suggested relationship between the order of receiving the first feedback and problem-solving effectiveness.
Purpose - This paper aims to suggest a delivery constrained internet shopping optimization problem (DISOP) which must be solved for online recommendation system to provide a customized service considering cost and delivery conditions at the same time. Research design, data, and methodology - To solve a (DISOP), we propose a multi-objective formulation and a solution approach. By using a commercial optimization software (LINDO), a (DISOP) can be solved iteratively and a pareto optimal set can be calculated for real-sized problem. Results - We propose a new research problem which is different with internet shopping optimization problem since our problem considers not only the purchasing cost but also delivery conditions at the same time. Furthermore, we suggest a multi-objective mathematical formulation for our research problem and provide a solution approach to get a pareto optimal set by using numerical example. Conclusions - This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization problem to solve internet shopping optimization problem with delivery constraint and a solution approach to get a pareto optimal set. The results of research will contribute to develop a customized comparison and recommendation system to help more easy and smart online shopping service.
In this paper, we introduce and study an explicit hybrid relaxed extragradient iterative method to approximate a common solution to generalized mixed equilibrium problem and fixed point problem for a nonexpansive semigroup in Hilbert space. Further, we prove that the sequence generated by the proposed iterative scheme converges strongly to the common solution to generalized mixed equilibrium problem and fixed point problem for a nonexpansive semigroup. This common solution is the unique solution of a variational inequality problem and is the optimality condition for a minimization problem. The results presented in this paper are the supplement, improvement and generalization of the previously known results in this area.
This review of literature establishes a contemporary meaning of mathematical problem solving including young children's mathematical problem solving processes/assessments and teaching strategies. The contemporary meaning of mathematical problem solving involves complicated higher thinking processes. Explanations of the mathematical problem solving processes of young children include the four steps suggested by $P{\acute{o}}lya$(1957) : understand the problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan, and review/extend the plan. Assessments of children's mathematical problem solving include both the process and the product of problem solving. Teaching strategies to support children's mathematical problem solving include mathematical problems built upon children's daily activities, interests, and questions and helping children to generate new approaches to solve problems.
In this experiment we emphasized the cooperative small group learning and the members of my group worked together to succeed and communicate their mathematics ideas freely. The researcher(teacher) became an observer and facilitator of small group interaction, paying attention to the ongoing learning process, Sometimes the researcher suggested some investigation approach(or discovery)being written by computer software or papers. In this experiment we provided 6 activities as follows : (1) changing the conditions in given problem. (2) operating the meaningful heuristics with the problem sets. (3) creating the problem situations related to understanding (4) creating the Modeling situations. (5) creating the problem related to combinatorial thinking in real world. (6) posing some real problem from real world. we could observed several conjectures First, Attitude and chility to interpret the problem setting is highly important to pose the problem effectively. Second, Generating the understanding can be a great tool to pose the problem effectively. Third, Sometimes inquiry approach represented by software or programmed book could be some motivation to enhance the posing activities. Forth, The various posing activities relate to one concept could give the students some opportunity to be adaptable and flexible in the their approach to unfamiliar problem sets.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of problem solving interaction through puppetry on interpersonal problem solving thinking. The subjects were 60 children, ranging in age from 69 to 72 months. All subjects were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups: the control group with no treatment, the puppetry group, the puppetry problem solving interaction group. The treatment covered 4 weeks. The instrument was based on Shure and Spivack's(1974) Preschool Interpersonal Problem Solving (PIPS) test. The data were analyzed with paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, Tukey test, percentage, and Kendall's ${\tau}$. There were significant differences among the three groups in the frequency of solving interpersonal problems. The problem solving interaction with puppetry group was the most effective on Interpersonal Cognitive Problem Solving Strategies. These results showed that problem solving interaction with puppetry is effective in cultivating young children's interpersonal problem solving thinking.
Many methods have been suggested for a creative problem solving approach. TRIZ approach is ranked top in its practical application because it is originated from the real patent analysis. This approach is assumed to be generic which can be applied to any types of problems regardless of problem type and its domain. The objective of this study is to propose a creative problem solving approach using TRIZ's contradiction analysis, then introduce a case study of applying this approach to a creative design coursework. Main topic covers a creative problem solving approach, a problem definition using TRIZ contradiction analysis, finding invention principles, and problem solving from the generic approach. For the course project, Roborobo tool is adopted to implement the design concept. This coursework helps students finding a general problem solving approach, and applying a generic solution for their specific problem domain.
Mathematical Problem solving has had the largest focus in the spread of mathematical topics since 1980. In Korea, most of the articles on problem solving appeared 1980s and 1990s, during which there were special concerns on this issue. And there is general acceptance of the idea that the famous statement "Problem solving must be the focus of school mathematics"(NCTM, 1980, p.1) in Agenda for Action, reflected in the curriculum of Korea. In a historical review focusing on the problem solving in the National Curriculum of Mathematics, we can infer that the primary goal of mathematics instruction should be to have students become competence problem solver. However, the practices of mathematics classroom and the trends of research in mathematical problem solving have oriented to ′teaching about problem solving′ and ′teaching for problem solving′. The issue of teaching via problem solving′ remain unsolved in the community of mathematics education and we need much more attention to this issue.
Recently, there are many corporations, schools and institutes that apply TRIZ to solve technical problems. However, in reality, only a few cases of brainstorming applications exist in utilizing forty principles of TRIZ due to the difficulty at TRIZ problem definition. In order to facilitate TRIZ applications, this study proposes the utilization of requirement definition and description tool of systems engineering in TRIZ problem definition. No requirement definition exists in general problem types that TRIZ approach is used in implementing system solution. At most of problem situations, TRIZ users reversely infer that certain problem belongs to which requirement definition it is and recommends TRIZ tools to be used for the exact problem definition. This study also proposes TRIZ problem definition method by applying the results of requirement definition process. The application of TRIZ is demonstrated to the general situation with no problem definition where the proposed method enables the proper use of TRIZ.
