  • The Roll-to-Roll system including continuous flexible thin materials and roller has its wide range of applications especially in the electronic printing industry. The industry is growing rapidly and the printing speed is also improving. However, the printing machine based on web and roller system has it own problem. As the web speed increases, the failure to wet the surface may occur and the air entrains between the liquid and the paper web. Air bubbles may remain attached to the paper web causing defects on product surface. With the development of image processing technique, the air airflow around the web and rolls can be visualized and calculated by PIV method. In our experiment, the simple web and rolls system is used to R2R simulator. The flow field is studied at various web speeds and positions. The result shows that the flow field has complicated structure with turbulent characteristic and the main trend of flow is obtained by taking time average of flow field.

  • This paper presents how to design and fabricate the gravure offset printing system for enhancement of register precision. Factors of precision error are caused by imprecision of gravure plate, deformation of substrate, printing quality change due to the change of ink viscosity, Imprecision of printing machine, and so on. This study suggests concept design of gravure offset printing system which is able to minimize or remove these error factors.

  • Scanning head has used to detect the error signal in register controller. However the resolution of the system is not enough for E-printing(Electronic-paper printing). In this paper, the register mark shapes and process techniques are studied using a smart camera which can detect the register mark and calculate the printing error. With these, a register controller within 10[um] of error range is developed for e-printing system and confirmed with experiments.

  • The dynamics of the winder roller of a roll-to-roll printing system for printed electronics is a time-varying system because of the variation of the winder roller radius owing to rewinding or unwinding of the web. Therefore, an adaptive control method considering the time-variant characteristics is required for precise tension control. In this study, the variable PID gain method is applied to the actual roll-to-roll system and verified by experiments for unwinder tension control. The required value of the winder roller radius for the application of the variable PID gain is estimated from the measurement of the winder tension and winder motor torque. The simulation results as well as experimental results show that the fixed PID gain control cannot stabilize the tension of the winder roller with varying winder roller radius. On the other hand, the variable PID gain method can control the tension of the winder roller regardless of the winder roller radius.

  • Printed electronics creates electrically functional devices by printing on variety of substrates. Printing typically uses common printing equipment or other low-cost equipment suitable for defining patterns on material, such as screen printing, flexography, gravure, offset lithography and inkjet. Compared to conventional manufacturing of microelectronics, printed electronics is characterized by simpler and more cost-effective fabrication of high and low volume products. Now there is huge effort towards printing many other more functional components, from displays to transistors to photovoltaic cells, using the full range of printing technologies - from inkjet to roll to roll analogue print techniques. The market for printed electronics will rise from $1.99 billion in 2010 to $55.10 billion in 2020. In 2030, this industry could be $300 billion - larger than the silicon semiconductor industry - from lighting to displays[8].

  • Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) has revolutionized the fabrications of electronics, photonics, optical and biological devices. Among all the NIL processes, roll-to-roll nanoimprinting is regarded best for having the attributes of low cost, continuous, simple, and energy-efficient process for nanoscale device fabrication. However, large-area printing is limited by the master mold deformation. In this study, a finite element model (FEM) has been constructed to assess the deformation of the roll mold adhesively wrapped on the carbon fiber reinforced material (CFRP) base roll. This study also optimizes the deformations in the metallic roll mold with respect to nip-forces applied in the printing process of nano-fabrication on large scale. The numerical simulations were also conducted to evaluate the deflection in roll mold assembly due to gravity. The results have shown decreasing trend of the deformation with decreasing nip-force. Also, pressure uniformity of about 40% has been optimized by using the current numerical model along with an acceptable deflection value in the vertical axis due to gravity.

  • Ink transfer process is very important to determine quality of printed pattern, therefore its mechanism should be understood to control printing quality. Although there have been many attempts to understand ink transfer mechanism by numerical simulation and experimental studies, their model was too much simple to model realistic printing process and our understanding is not enough yet. In this paper we designed ink transfer visualization system to present flow visualization of ink transfer process for gravure offset printing. We considered rotational effect of blanket roll which is related with printing speed and used non-Newtonian fluid as working fluid such as Ag paste. For printing unit, cantilever-type blanket roll is used for convenient visualization of ink transfer. Serial images were captured continuously by using high-speed CMOS camera and long range microscope. We investigated the effects of various design parameters such as printing speed and pattern angle on the ink transfer process. We found more stretched ink filament for non-Newtonian fluid than Newtonian fluid. As increasing printing speed, length of stretched ink filament and height of break-up point are also increased. We also compared ink transfer process between CD and MD pattern and its relationship with ink transfer mechanism.
