So far BESS(Battery Energy storage system) has been widely applied to power systems rapidly. Usually it has been used to regulate the renewable energy output and to adjust the power system frequency. In 2013, EPRI has reported a study of utilizing BESS to replace two black start generators of American Electric Power(AEP) that will be demolished. If the BESS can be used as a self-starting generator, it is possible to shorten the long-distance primary transmission line and shorten the restoration time because BESS is capable of the high-speed start and there is no restriction on the installation position. This paper presents a possibility of using BESS as a self-starting generator by using PSCAD/EMTDC in Korean power systems. Herein, the process to estimated the required capacity of BESS is also presented.
An electric multiple unit(EMU) consists of car body, bogie and brake equipment which is directly related to safety and performance of the motorcar. The blending brake mixed an electric brake and a friction brake is to reduce the energy by applying the restoration energy caused when the motorcar is stopped to car lines and to curtail the maintenance cost by saving the friction brake use. We have developed the advanced EMU since 2004, based on the experiences on the standard EMU in 1999, and we develop the installation which minimizes the use rate of the friction air brake by maximizing the electric brake use in the existing blending brake. We could accomplish the goal by improving the motorcar's Performance and solving the restoration energy's deficit by the friction brake. Actually, when it comes to the test results of standard EMU, except the service brake, in most conditions, we use electric brake to meet the requirements of the necessary brake power, exclusive when the motorcar leaves and stops. Therefore, in this paper, we consider the design concept of motorcar's blending brakes and suggest the way to develop the blending brake using the electric brake maximumly, which is caused by adequately controling the electric brake and the restoration brake.
DAS(Distribution Automation System) is equipped with several software applications such as service restoration, loss minimization, and protective relay coordination. The software applications of DAS are very sensitive to the amount of section load being carried by a particular section of distribution lines. Moreover, each software application requires a different parameter of the section load according to its purpose. Therefore, This paper proposes a new section load management method using real-time measurement data of the distribution lines. In order to provide accurate data to DAS applications, this method considers section loads in terms of the relationship of power versus time. In order to establish that the proposed method is feasible, a performance-testing simulator was developed, and case studies were conducted for a modified real distribution network.

The calculation of short-circuit currents is important for power systems operation and restoration, and for determining the means to protect human lives and properties. In this paper, a part of a power system network, around the D$\breve{e}$tmarovice power station in Czech Republic, was simulated by the well known program EMTP-ATPDraw (Electromagnetic Transients Program-Alternative Transient Program), and short-circuit currents and voltages were calculated at different points in the electric network and presented as a time function by the PlotXY program. Calculations were done just for phase-to-ground, and for the three-phase short-circuit at the Kun$\check{c}$ice substation. The results were important for determining the characteristics of the equipment required to withstand or break the short-circuit current; for this reason, the calculations were repeated using earth-fault resistances only for the case of busbar KUN shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
Service restoration following a complete or partial collapse starts with reenergizing a transmission line from black-start generators. Voltage problems can arise from Ferranti effect as unloaded transmission line is reenergized and has to be required to consider it when KPX makes a restorative plan on the massive blackout. This paper presents the investigation of seven regional blackstart lines which are chosen by KPX restorative plan and suggests the verification method for the new designed line according to the system modification.
This paper deals with the expert system for power system recognition of energized and deenergized system using circuit breaker information. The basic idea is isolating the system with the system matrix representing the system configuration and the states of the circuit breakers. The knowledge base is composed of these isolated systems and decision rules. The isolated system with the sources is recognized as the energized system and the system without the source as the deenergized system. The rules use the system matrix and the the inference scheme is simplified in a great deal. Above all, the overall searching labor of the rules is independent on the system size and it is possible to expand into the real system and the real time restoration can be carried out easily. The expert system is written in PROLOG.
Image processing has provided powerful techniques to extract from the acoustic signals the desired information on evaluation for leakage existence, leakage rate, and searching for leakage location, etc. The imagery NDE data available can add additional and significant dimension in nondestructive evaluation(NDE) information and thus for exploiting in applications. To extract such information the use of advanced image processing techniques is much needed. In recent years, there has been much increased use of acoustic signal image processing techniques in acoustic NDE. This approach will increase the efficiency of inspection procedures and reduce inspection time. In this paper we are concerned only with This paper is concerned mainly with the use of advanced image processing techniques in valve leakage detection and advanced image restoration and enhancement methods, which attempt to evaluate promptly by a visualization method the acoustic sources while detecting the valve leakage.
In order to minimize the damage from power outage, power system should be restored quickly. In this paper, a procedure for the restoration of microgrid is proposed. After elimination of the causes of power outage, a black start algorithm is executed by considering the characteristics of distributed generation control. After all resources have been recovered to the normal state, a grid reconnecting algorithm for stable operation in grid-connected mode is performed. In order to verify the proposed algorithm, low voltage microgrid is simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC.
Power system restoration following a massive blackout starts with re-energizing primary restorative transmission systems at first. The comparison of the TLCC(transmission line charging capacity) and the RPC(reactive power capability) of related black-start generator should be considered in this stage because overvoltage can be caused by self-excitation at the generator when the RPC is smaller than the TLCC. The RPC can be decided by two criteria. One is stator end core heating, and the other is steady state stability. RPC in steady state stability area has been found based on a synchronous reactance Xd. This paper presents RPC limit of salient pole machine which is different from that of non-salient pole machine in steady state stability area and shows derivation process about that.
