  • Physical properties of Plasma electrolytic oxidized 8 different types of Al alloys, A-1100, A-2024, A-5052, A-6061, A-6063, A-7075, ACD-7B and ACD-12 were investigated. The electrolyte for PEO was $Na_2SiO_3$ solutions with NaOH and some alkali earthen metal salts. Porous layer near the surface of PEO coating was not found, and surface roughness Ra50 was below 2.5 ${\mu}m$. Surface roughness was affected by growth rate of plasma electrolytic oxidized layer, not by Si content in Al alloy.

  • Commercial applications of indium tin oxide (ITO) can be separated into two useful areas. As it is perceived to bear electrical properties and optical transparency at once, its chance to apply to promising fields, usually for an optical device, gets greater in the passing time. ITO is one of the transparent conducting oxides (TCO), and required to carry the relative resistance less than $10^{-3}{\Omega}$/cm and transmittances over 80 % in the visible wavelength of light. Because ITO has considerable refractive index, there exist applications for anti-reflection coatings. Anti-reflection properties require gradual change in refractive index from films to air. Such changes are obtained from film density or nano-clustered fractional void. Glancing angle deposition (GLAD) method is a well known process for adjusting nanostructure of the films. From its shadowing effects, GLAD helps to deposit well-controlled porous films effectively. In this study, we are comparing the reference sample to samples coated with controlled ITO multilayer accumulated by an e-beam evaporation system. At first, the single ITO layer samples are prepared to decide refractive index with ellipsometry. Afterwards, ITO multilayer samples are fabricated and fitted by multilayer ellipsometric model based on single layer data. The structural properties were measured by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and by scanning X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The ellipsometry was used to determine refractive indices and extinction coefficient. The optical transmittance of the film was investigated by using an ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer.

  • Over the past few decades, much effort has been made to improve the mechanical and biological performance of HA, in order to extend its range of applications. As a major inorganic component of human hard tissues, hydroxyapatite bioceramic is regarded as being one of the most biocompatible materials. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have confirmed its excellent bioactivity, osteoconductivity and bone forming ability. However, because of its poor mechanical properties, its use in hard tissue applications has been restricted to those areas in which it can be used in the form of small sized powders/granules or in the non-load bearing sites. A number of researchers have focused on improving the mechanical and biological performance of HA, as well as on the formulation of hybrid and composite systems in order to extend its range of applications. In this article, we reviewed our recent works on HA-based biomaterials; i) the strengthening of HA with ceramic oxides, ii) HA-based bioactive coatings on metallic implants, iii) HA-based porous scaffolds and iv) HA-polymer hybrids/composites.

  • Paper stock could be situated in a cooled environment seasonally and/or regionally otherwise it is stored in a controlled warehouse. In this paper, printing problems on a cooled paper are investigated and characterized in terms of paper properties. For this purpose, various kinds of sample are cooled down under a specially designed freezing device and printed for observing their printability. Causes for poor ink transfer on a cooled paper are suggested due to condensation, surface inactivity, and rheological change in ink film. Paperboards with higher amount of binder, thick and/or multi-coated layers are more vulnerable to poor ink trap. Severe drying of wet coating could cause a similar result as that of the coatings with higher binder formulation. It is shown that more absorptive porous structure is desirable for better ink receptivity in a cooled status. Printing on a dampened surface may be an indicator for ink transferability on a cooled paper. Finally, desirable directions for papermaker and printshop are suggested.

  • In practical operation, the exposed surfaces may get dirty thus degrade the performance of devices. So the combination of self cleaning and antireflection is very desirable for use in outdoor photovoltaic and displaying devices, self cleaning windows and car windshields. For the purpose of self cleaning, the surface needs to be either superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic. However, in practice AR in the visible region and self cleaning are a pair of competitive properties. To satisfy the requirements for superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic surfaces, high surface roughness is required. But it usually cause severely light scattering. Photo-responsive coatings (TiO2, ZnO etc.) can lead to superhydrophilic. However, the refractive indices are high. Thus for porous structure, controlling pore size in the underwavelength scale to reduce the light scattering is very crucial for highly transparent and self cleaning antireflection coating. Herein, we demonstrate a simple method to make high performance broadband antireflection layer on the glass surface, by "carving" the surface by hot alkali solution. Etched glass has superhydrophilic surface. By chemical modification, it turns to superhydrophobic. Enhanced transparency (up to 97%) in a broad wavelength range was obtained by short time etching. Also antifogging effect has been demonstrated, which may offer advantage for devices working at high humidity environment or underwater. Compositional dependence of the properties was observed by comparing three different commercially available glasses.

  • Commercially pure titanium (Cp-Ti) and Ti alloys (typically Ti-6Al-4V) display excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Although the chemical composition and topography are considered important, the mechanical properties of the material and the loading conditions in the host have, conventionally. Ti and its alloys are not bioactive. Therefore, they do not chemically bond to the bone, whereas they physically bond with bone tissue. The electrochemical deposition process provides an effective surface for biocompatibility because large surface area can be served to cell proliferation. Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) enables control in the chemical composition, porous structure, and thickness of the TiO2 layer on Ti surface. Silicon (Si) in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in bone formation and immune system regulation, and is also the most abundant trace element in bone. The objective of this work was to study on electrochemical behaviors of PEO-treated Ti-6Al-4V Alloy in solution containing Zn and Si ions. The morphology, the chemical composition, and the microstructure analysis of the sample were examined using FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. The potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance tests for corrosion behaviors were carried out in 0.9% NaCl solution at similar body temperature using a potentiostat. The promising results successfully demonstrated the immense potential of Si/Zn-TiO2 coatings in dental and biomaterials applications.

  • Certain agrochemicals may be tuned for increased effectiveness when downsized to nanoparticles (NPs), where one dimension is less than 100 nm. The NPs may function as fertilizers, pesticides and products to improve plant health through seed priming, growth promotion, and induction of systemic tolerance to stress. Formulations will allow targeted applications with timed release, reducing waste and pollution when compared to treatments with bulk-size products. The NPs may be a single component, such as nano-ZnO as a fertilizer, or be composites of compatible materials, for example where N, P, and K plus micronutrients are available. The active materials could be loaded into porous carriers or tethered to base nanostructures. Coatings could include such natural products alginate, chitosan, zein, or silica. Certain NPs are taken up and transported in the plant's phloem and xylem so systemic effects are feasible. Timed and targeted release of the active product could be achieved in response to changes in pH or availability of ligands within the plant or the rhizosphere. Global research has revealed the many potentials offered by NP formulations to aid sustainability in agriculture. Current work will provide information needed by regulatory agencies to assess their safety in the agricultural setting.

  • Fabric fibrous filter has been used in various industrial applications owing to the low cost and wide generality. However, the basic properties of fabric materials often limit the practical utilization including hot gas cleaning. This study attempts to find new coatings of porous fibrous filter media in order to overcome its insufficient thermal resistance and durability. Teflon was one of the plausible chemicals to supplement the vulnerability against frequent external thermal impacts. A foaming agent composed of Teflon and some organic additives was tentatively coated on the glass fiber mat. The present test Teflon foam coated filter was fount to be useful for hot gas cleaning, up to $250^{\circ}C$-$300^{\circ}C$. Close examination using XPS(X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) and Contact angle proved the binding interactions between carbon and fluorine, which implies coating stability. The PTFE/Glass foam coated filter consisted of more than 95% (C-F)n bond, and showed super-hydrophobic with good-oleophobic characteristics. The contact angle of liquid droplets on the filter surface enabled to find the filter wet-ability against liquid water or oil.

  • In this study, Zn and Zn-15Al were coated on general carbon steel by plasma arc metal spraying and then immersed in a 3.5wt.% NaCl solution similar to the seawater environment to evaluate the corrosion resistance properties. Through the surface shape analysis test by SEM and XRD, it was found that the Zn coating was porous and needle-shaped, so the penetration of the electrolyte was easy, and thus the corrosion rate was rapid. On the other hand, the Zn-15Al coating had a uniform and dense shape and was shown to suppress corrosion.

  • Aluminum alloy is used by adding various elements according to the needs of the industry. Aluminum alloys such as 5052 and 6061 are known to possess excellent corrosion resistance by adding Mg. Despite their excellent physical properties, corrosion can occur. To solve this problem, an anodization technique generally can improve corrosion resistance by forming an oxide structure with maximized hydrophobic properties through coatings. In this study, the anodizing technique was used to improve the hydrophobicity of aluminum 5052 and 6061 by creating porous nanostructures on top of the surface. An oxide film was formed by applying anodizing voltages of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 V to aluminum alloys followed by immersion in 0.1 M phosphoric acid for 30 minutes to expand oxide pores. Contact angle and corrosion characteristics were different according to the structure after anodization. For the 5052 aluminum, the corrosion potential was improved from -363 mV to -154 mV as the contact angle increased from 116° to 136°. For the 6061 aluminum, the corrosion potential improved from -399 mV to -124 mV when the contact angle increased from 116° to 134°.
