  • Because of excellent mechanical properties, such as good friction coefficient and heat resistance characteristics, PTFE parts have been widely used in the industries. However, the poor wear resistance of PTFE has been a main problem limiting wider applications. In this study, to improve the poor wear resistance of PTFE, porous PTFE composites were prepared by mixing additives(sodium bicarbonate and graphite) with PTFE powder. The friction coefficient, wear resistance and lubricating property of porous PTFE composites were measured and the results were compared with those of untreated PTFE.

  • We prepared hydrophilic porous supporters for the reinforced composite fuel cell membrane by radiation grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) and hydrophilic sodium allylsulfonate (SAS) into a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) supporter. The physicochemical properties of the supporters prepared under various reaction conditions such as molar ratio of SAS/AN, monomer concentration, and irradiation dose were evaluated. FTIR was utilized to confirm the successful introduction of SAS/AN copolymer chains into the porous PTFE. The pores of the porous PTFE film were found to be decreased with an increase in the degree of grafting by using FE-SEM and gurley number. Furthermore, by analyzing the degree of grafting, contact angle, and TBO (toluidine blue O) uptake, the hydrophilicity of the prepared supporters was found to increase with an increase in the degree of grafting.

  • All-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is one of the promising high-capacity energy storage technologies. The ion-exchange membrane (IEM) is a key component influencing the charge-discharge performance and durability of VRFB. In this study, a pore-filled anion-exchange membrane (PFAEM) was fabricated by filling the pores of porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) support with excellent physical and chemical stability to compensate for the shortcomings of the existing hydrocarbon-based IEMs. The use of a thin porous PTFE support significantly lowered the electrical resistance, and the use of the PTFE support and the introduction of a fluorine moiety into the filling ionomer significantly improved the oxidation stability of the membrane. As a result of the evaluation of the charge-discharge performance, the higher the current efficiency was seen by increasing the fluorine content in the PFAEM, and the superior voltage and energy efficiencies were shown owing to the lower electrical resistance compared to the commercial membrane. In addition, it was confirmed that the use of a hydrophobic PTFE support is more preferable in terms of oxidation stability and charge-discharge performance.

  • In order to use as supporters for the reinforced composite fuel cell membrane, poly(acrylic acid)-grafted porous polytetrafluoroethylenes (PTFEs) were prepared via introduction of poly(acrylic acid) graft chains by a radiation grafting method. FTIR was utilized to confirm the successful introduction of poly(acrylic acid) graft polymer chains into the porous PTFEs. Contact angles were examined to observe the hydrophilicity of the surface of the prepared substrates. The result indicates that the hyrophilicity of the surface in the prepared substrates increases with an increase in the number of hydrophilic polymer chains. FE-SEM, gurley number, and tensile strength were also utilized to characterize the prepared substrates.

  • Porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thin films are fabricated by spin-coating using a dispersion solution containing PTFE powders, and their crystalline properties are investigated after thermal annealing at various temperatures ranging from 300 to $500^{\circ}C$. Before thermal annealing, the film is densely packed and consists of many granular particles 200-300 nm in diameter. However, after thermal annealing, the film contains many voids and fibrous grains on the surface. In addition, the film thickness decreases after thermal annealing owing to evaporation of the surfactant, binder, and solvent composing the PTFE dispersion solution. The film thickness is systematically controlled from 2 to $6.5{\mu}m$ by decreasing the spin speed from 1,500 to 500 rpm. A triboelectric nanogenerator is fabricated by spin-coating PTFE thin films onto polished Cu foils, where they act as an active layer to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. A triboelectric nanogenerator consisting of a PTFE layer and Al metal foil pair shows typical output characteristics, exhibiting positive and negative peaks during applied strain and relief cycles due to charging and discharging of electrical charge carriers. Further, the voltage and current outputs increase with increasing strain cycle owing to accumulation of electrical charge carriers during charge-discharge.

  • Nickel was used as a catalyst for the hydrogen electrode in alkaline fuel cell. The optimum electrolyte concentration and recommendable operating temperature identified from polarization curves were 6N KOH and $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. Comparing the conductivity, apparent porosity and current density at porous hydrogen electrode manufactured with various PTFE additions, the proper content of PTFE was 10wt%. Chemisorption was carried out to define the appropriate surface area. The electrode produced with 10wt% of PTFE and sintered at $340^{\circ}C$ showed more than $200mA/cm^2$ of current density. The morphology of electrode surface was investigated with SEM. Cold pressing, hot pressing, rolling and calendering methods were carried out for manufacturing the electrode, and electrochemical characteristics for each method was studied.

  • The critical breakthrough pressure through both porous PVDF (polyvinylidenefluoride) and PTFE (poly-tetrafluoroethylene) was measured using pure water, $0.1M{\sim}4.0M$ NaOH aqueous solutions and $0.1M{\sim}3.0M\;NaHSO_3$ aqueous solutions. The critical breakthrough pressure through PTFE was observed to be higher than that through PVDF membrane at the same pore size. The critical breakthrough pressure decreased as the molar concentration of NaOH increased up to 1.0 M reaching the minimum and then increased further after 1.0 M NaOH up to 4.0 M NaOH. On the other hand, the critical breakthrough pressure measured using $NaHSO_3$ aqueous solutions was decreased with increasing the concentration of $NaHSO_3$. The critical breakthrough pressure could be well interpreted with Cantor's equation.

  • Porous matrices to contain and support phosphoric acid were prepared with PTFE as binder and SiC whisker or SiC powders of various particle size for phosphoric acid fuel cell(PAFC). Among the matrix characteristics the most important factors in stack performances were thought to be the bubble pressure and electrolyte wettability And then matrix was constructed to have pore size smaller than that of electrode. The bubble pressures and wettabilities of matrices manufactured with various size of SiC and different PTFE contents were investigated and related with the porosities measured by porosimeter, and then the optimum manufacturing condition of matrix for PAFC was determined.

  • Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) grafts have been used as vascular access for many patients suffering from end stage renal disease. However, the vascular graft can cause significant clinical problems such as stenosis or thrombosis. For this reason, many studies have been performed to make drug eluting graft, but initial burst is major problem in almost drug eluting systems. Therefore we used biodegradable polymer to reduce initial burst and make sustained drug delivery. The ePTFE grafts were dipped into a paclitaxel-dissolved solution and then PLGA-dissolved solution was passed through the lumen of ePTFE. We analyzed whether the dose of paclitaxel is enough and the loading amount of PLGA on ePTFE graft increases according to the coating solution's concentration. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of various concentration of PLGA showed that the porous surface of graft was more packed with PLGA by tetrahydrofuran solution dissolved PLGA. In addition, in vitro release profiles of Ptx-PLGA graft demonstrated that early burst was gradually decreased as increasing the concentration of PLGA. These results suggest that PLGA coating of Ptx loaded graft can retard drug release, it is useful tool to control drug release of medical devices.
