  • Herein, novel porous structures were fabricated from monomer solutions of dimethylsiloxane and benzene by directional crystallization in twice. First, a honeycomb-like structure was fabricated by $1^{st}$ directional crystallization of solvent. By infiltration of the solution and subsequent $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization, novel structures of different pores in the honeycomb-like structure were fabricated. The porous materials prepared by the repeated directional crystallization have higher indentation modulus and hardness than those of the samples prepared by single directional crystallization. When a higher solution concentration was used in $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization, the maximum increase (indentation modulus: 2140% increase, indentation hardness: 2330% increase) was obtained. On the other hand, porosity and contact angle were lower in the samples from $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization than those from $1^{st}$ directional crystallization. A large decreases was observed, when a relatively high concentration was used in $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization (porosity: 21% decrease, contact angle: 36% decrease).

  • ZnO nanorods were successfully fabricated on Zn foil by chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The ZnO precursor concentration and immersion time affected the surface morphologies, structure, and electrical properties of the ZnO nanorods. As the precursor concentration increased, the diameter of the ZnO nanorods increased from ca. 50 nm to ca. 150 nm. The thicknesses of the ZnO nanorods were from ca. $1.98{\mu}m$ to ca. $2.08{\mu}m$. ZnO crystalline phases of (100), (002), and (101) planes of hexagonal wurtzite structure were confirmed by XRD measurement. The fabricated ZnO nanorods showed a photoluminescene property at 380 nm. Especially, the ZnO nanorods deposited for 6 h in solution with a concentration of 0.005M showed a stronger (101) peak than they did (100) or (002) peaks. In addition, these ZnO nanorods showed a good electrical property, with the lowest resistance among the four samples, because the nanorods were densely in contact and relatively without pores. Therefore, a ZnO nanorod substrate is useful as a highly sensitive biochip substrate to detect biomolecules using an electrochemical method.

  • This work involves quantitatively investigating the correlation between reductions in strength and variations in pore structure under high temperature that can be utilized as estimation for predicting the inner temperature of member damaged by fire. The experimental results were remarkedly affected by micro-filling effect of silica fume and the different water-binder ratios. The increase of the exposure temperature caused the increase of porosity, which resulted from the reason that evaporable water in gel pore or capillary pores as well as chemically bound water was eliminated from hardened cement paste due to the dehydration of C-S-H and $Ca(OH)_2$. Thermal shrinkage of hardened cement paste gives rise to micro-crack, which cause the increase of porosity. Based on the experimental result that the increase of porosity is in charge of exposure temperature, how porosity is distributed can predict temperature-time history and assess the performance of concrete damaged by fire.

  • In radioactive waste repositories constructed in underground, concrete member could be in contact with groundwater for a long time. However, this pure water creates concentration gradients which lead to the diffusion of Ca ions from the pore water and the degradation of underground concrete. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating the alteration of pore structure and loss of compressive strength associated with dissolution. The results showed that as the leaching period became longer, the pore volume within 50 nm to 500 nm in diameter is greatly increased. Also, the volume of pores larger than 200 nm rapidly increased during initial leaching time and those below 200 nm gradually increased. Furthermore, the compressive strength gradually decreased with increase of degraded thickness. The residual strength of the degraded concrete with OPC was in the range of 33% to 58%.

  • Porous W with controlled pore structure was fabricated by thermal decomposition and hydrogen reduction process of PMMA beads and $WO_3$ powder compacts. The PMMA sizes of 8 and $50{\mu}m$ were used as pore forming agent for fabricating the porous W. The $WO_3$ powder compacts with 20 and 70 vol% PMMA were prepared by uniaxial pressing and sintered for 2 h at $1200^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen atmosphere. TGA analysis revealed that the PMMA was decomposed at about $400^{\circ}C$ and $WO_3$ was reduced to metallic W at $800^{\circ}C$. Large pores in the sintered specimens were formed by thermal decomposition of spherical PMMA, and their size was increased with increase in PMMA size and the amount of PMMA addition. Also the pore shape was changed from spherical to irregular form with increasing PMMA contents due to the agglomeration of PMMA in the powder mixing process.

  • A promising candidate material for a $H_2$ permeable membrane is SiC due to its many unique properties. A hydrogen-selective SiC membrane was successfully fabricated on the outer surface of an intermediate multilayer $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ with a graded structure. The $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ multilayer was formed on top of a macroporous $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ support by consecutively dipping into a set of successive solutions containing boehmite sols of different particle sizes and then calcining. The boehmite sols were prepared from an aluminum isopropoxide precursor and heated to $80^{\circ}C$ with high speed stirring for 24 hrs to hydrolyze the precursor. Then the solutions were refluxed at $92^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs to form a boehmite precipitate. The particle size of the boehmite sols was controlled according to various experimental parameters, such as acid types and acid concentrations. The topmost SiC layer was formed on top of the intermediate $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ by pyrolysis of a SiC precursor, polycarbosilane, in an Ar atmosphere. The resulting amorphous SiC-on-$Al_2O_3$ composite membrane pyrolyzed at $900^{\circ}C$ possessed a high $H_2$ permeability of $3.61\times10^{-7}$ $mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}Pa^{-1}$ and the $H_2/CO_2$ selectivity was much higher than the theoretical value of 4.69 in all permeation temperature ranges. Gas permeabilities through a SiC membrane are affected by Knudsen diffusion and a surface diffusion mechanism, which are based on the molecular weight of gas species and movement of adsorbed gas molecules on the surface of the pores.

  • We investigated the post-annealing effect of Sn-incorporated β-Ga2O3 (β-Ga2O3 : Sn) nanowires (NWs) grown on sapphire (0001) substrates using radio-frequency powder sputtering. The β-Ga2O3 : Sn NWs were converted to a porous structure during the vacuum annealing process at 800℃. Host non-stoichiometric Ga2O3-x, is transformed into stoichiometric Ga2O3, where Sn atoms separate and form Sn nano-clusters that gradually evaporate in a vacuum atmosphere. As a result, the amount of Sn atoms was reduced from 1.31 to 0.27 at%. Pores formed on the sides of β-Ga2O3 : Sn NWs were observed. This increases the ratio of the surface to the volume of β-Ga2O3 : Sn NWs.

  • In this study, we proposed new forming process for a porous ceramic body with unique pore structure. h tubular-type porous NiO-YSZ body with radially aligned pore channels was prepared by freeze-drying of aqueous slurry. A NiO-YSZ slurry was poured into the mold, which was designed to control the crystallization direction of the ice, followed by freezing. Thereafter the ice was sublimated at a reduced pressure. SEM observations revealed that the NiO-YSZ porous body showed aligned large pore channels parallel to the ice growth direction, and fine pores are formed around the outer surface of the tube. It was considered that the difference in the ice growth rate during the freezing process resulted in such a characteristic microstructure. Bilayer consisting of dense thin electrolyte film of YSZ onto the tubular type porous body has been successfully fabricated using a slurry-coating process followed by co-firing. It was regarded that the obtained bilayer structure is suitable for constructing electrode-support type electrochemical devices such as solid oxide fuel cells.

  • We have carried out quantitative structure and property analysis of the nanoporous structures of low dielectric constant (low-k) carbon-doped silicon oxide (SiCOH) films, which were deposited with plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using vinyltrimethylsilane (VTMS), divinyldimethylsilane (DVDMS), and tetravinylsilane (TVS) as precursor and oxygen as an oxidant gas. We found that the SiCOH film using VTMS only showed well defined spherical nanopores within the film after thermal annealing at $450^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. The average pore radius of the generated nanopores within VTMS SiCOH film was 1.21 nm with narrow size distribution of 0.2. It was noted that thermally labile $C_{x}H_{y}$ phase and Si-$CH_3$ was removed to make nanopore within the film by thermal annealing. Consequently, this induced that decrease of average electron density from 387 to $321\;nm^{-3}$ with increasing annealing temperature up to $450^{\circ}C$ and taking a longer annealing time up to 4 h. However, the other SiCOH films showed featureless scattering profiles irrespective of annealing conditions and the decreases of electron density were smaller than VTMS SiCOH film. Because, with more vinyl groups are introduced in original precursor molecule, films contain more organic phase with less volatile characteristic due to the crosslinking of vinyl groups. Collectively, the presenting findings show that the organosilane containing vinyl group was quite effective to deposit SiCOH/$C_{x}H_{y}$ dual phase films, and post annealing has an important role on generation of pores with the SiCOH film.

  • The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the pore structure and mechanical properties of early frost damaged concrete using electric arc furnace slag as aggregate. From the results, when the concrete is exposed to frost damage at an early age, the peak point of pores 100 to 150 ㎛ in diameter were transferred into larger one. When the freezing duration is not exceeded 24 hours, it is possible that the pore distribution of under the 200 ㎛ is maintained and pore size of over 500 ㎛ is not formed, and, the freezing resistance of concrete using EFG could be improved. When BFS was mixed in concrete using EFG as coarse aggregate, the relative strength is higher than that of natural coarse aggregate. Meanwhile, the elastic modulus and resonance frequency did not change significantly due to the early frost damage as compared with the compressive strength. So, it is necessary to analyze the correlation between the experimental results in order to evaluate the performance degradation due to early frost damage.
