To improve the thermal resistance of a porous borosilicate lining block, we prepared and applied polysiloxane-fumed silica-ethanol slurry on top of the block and fired the coating layer using a torch for 5 minutes at $800^{\circ}C$. We conducted magnified characterizations using a microscope and XRD analysis to observe phase transformations, and TGA-DTA analysis to determine the thermal resistance. Thermal characterizations showed improved heat resistance with relatively high polysiloxane content slurry. Cross-sectional optical microscope observation showed less melting near the surface and decreased pore formation area with higher polysiloxane content slurry. XRD analysis revealed that the block and coating layer were amorphous phases. TGA-DTA analysis showed an endothermic reaction at around $550^{\circ}C$ as the polysiloxane in the coating layer reacted to form SiOC. Therefore, coating polysiloxane on a borosilicate block contributes to preventing the melting of the block at temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$.
Two polysiloxanes having different chemical structures were blended with polycarbonate (PC) under ultrasonic irradiation in solution. The polysiloxanes used were poly(methylphenyl siloxane) and vinyl-terminated poly(dimethyl siloxane). It was of primary interest to investigate the effect of polysiloxane structure on the rheological properties of PC/polysiloxane blends. It was found that a small amount (1.5 phr) of polysiloxanes greatly altered the melt viscosities and elasticity of PC. In particular, incorporation of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) led to a notable increase in elasticity with greater shear sensitivity of PC. The observed rheological behaviors of PC/polysiloxane blends were partly explained in conjunction with the tendencies found in ultrasonic degradation of polysiloxanes. Thermal stability and morphology in sonicated blends of PC/polysiloxane blends were also discussed.
We have analyzed chemical properties of polysiloxane and polysilazane films, respectively, as sealing materials for electrostatic chuck (ESC) and have investigated the possibility of polysilazane as an alternative sealant to polysiloxane. It has been revealed that Si-O with organic bonding ($Si-CH_3$) existed in polysiloxane films compared to only pure Si-O bonding in polysilazane films. The sealing property of polysilazane has been found outstanding even in a short time of application. In the polysiloxane films containing $H_2O$, pin holes have been found possibly due to $CO_2$ gas evolution, and low adhesion with Si substrate has been observed after heat stress test in connection with the existence of organic bonding. After acid resistance test in 0.5 vol.% HF, 68 wt.% $HNO_3$, and 37 wt.% HCl solution, polyilazane films have shown a longer survival times. Compared to the conventional polysiloxane sealant, polysilazane is expected as a new sealing material because of good thermal and chemical stability.
Highly porous silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were fabricated from polysiloxane, SiC and carbon black fillers, AlN-$Y_2O_3$ additives, and poly (ether-co-octene) (PEOc) and expandable microsphere templates. Powder mixtures with a fixed PEOc content (30 wt%) and varying SiC filler contents from 0-21 wt% were compression-molded. During the pyrolysis process, the polysiloxane was converted to SiOC, the PEOc generated a considerable degree of interconnected porosity, and the expandable microspheres generated fine cells. The polysiloxane-derived SiOC and carbon black reacted and synthesized nano-sized SiC with a carbothermal reduction during a heat-treatment. Subsequent sintering of the compacts in a nitrogen atmosphere produced highly porous SiC ceramics with porosities ranging from 78 % to 82 % and a flexura lstrength of up to ~7 MPa.
The effect of Sr addition on the flexural strength of bulk SiOC ceramics was investigated in polymer-derived SiOC ceramics prepared by conventional hot pressing. Crack-free, dense SiOC discs with a 30 mm diameter were successfully fabricated from commercially available polysiloxane with 1 mol% strontium isopropoxide derived Sr as an additive. Agglomerates formed after the pyrolysis of polysiloxane led to the formation of domain-like structures. The flexural strength of bulk SiOC was strongly dependent on the domain size formed and Sr addition. Both the minimization of the agglomerate size in the starting powders by milling after pyrolysis and the addition of Sr, which reinforces the SiOC structure, are efficient ways to improve the flexural strength of bulk SiOC ceramics. The typical flexural strength of bulk Sr-doped SiOC ceramics fabricated from submicron-sized SiOC powders was ~209 MPa.
