PEBB Based Bi-directional Rapid Charging System for EV Traction Battery

  • This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charge mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. The pre-charge mode employs the stair-case shaped current profile to accomplish shorter charging time while maintaining the reliable operation of the battery. The proposed system is specified to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 78A. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system.

  • The monolayer behaviors at the air-water interface and the dielectric properties of MI-0 LB films for complex concentration were investigated by the surface pressure-area ($\pi$-A) isotherms and dielectric constant. The molecular area was expanded with increase of metal ions concentration. It is considered that the expansion of molecular area is due to electrostatic repulsion between the polymer chains andhydrophobic increase of ionic strength. In the frequency-dependent complex dielectric constant at room temperature, the real part of dielectric constant($\varepsilon'$) is about 6.0~10.0 in the low-frequency range and is decreasing slowly upto $1O^4$Hz. It decreased abruptly near $1O^5Hz$. It seems to be dielectric dispersion in this frequency range. Also, the imaginary part of dielectric constant ($\varepsilon"$) shows a peak in $1O^5$~$1O^6Hz$. It seems to be dielectric absorption in this frequency range.ange.

  • Polymer nanocomposite has been attracting more attention as a new insulation material because homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized inorganic fillers can improve various properties significantly. In this paper, various kinds of epoxy-based nanocomposites were made, and the AC breakdown strengths of Nano filler and micro-$SiO_2$ filler mixtures of epoxy-based composites were analyzed using sphere-to-sphere electrodes. Moreover, nano- and microfiller combinations were investigated as an approach to practical application of nanocomposite insulation materials. Its composition ratio was 100 (resin):82 (hardener):1.5 (accelerator). AC breakdown tests were performed at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$), $80^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$ in the vicinity of $T_g$ ($90^{\circ}C$). Thermal conductivity was measured using TC-30.

  • Due to the escalation in hydrocarbon consumption, the offshore industry is now looking for advanced technology to be employed for deep sea exploration. Riser system is an integral part of floating structure used for such oil and gas extraction from deep water offering a system of drill twines and production tubing to spread the exploration well towards the ocean bed. Thus, the marine risers need to be precisely employed. The incorporation of the strengthening material, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) for deep and ultra-deep water riser has drawn extensive curiosity in offshore engineering as it might offer potential weight savings and improved durability. The design for FRP strengthening involves the local design for critical loads along with the global analysis under all possible nonlinearities and imposed loadings such as platform motion, gravity, buoyancy, wave force, hydrostatic pressure, current etc. for computing and evaluating critical situations. Finite element package, ABAQUS/AQUA is the competent tool to analyze the static and dynamic responses under the offshore hydrodynamic loads. The necessities in design and operating conditions are studied. The study includes describing the methodology, procedure of analysis and the local design of composite riser. The responses and fatigue damage characteristics of the risers are explored for the effects of FRP strengthening. A detail assessment on the technical expansion of strengthening riser has been outlined comprising the inquiry on its behavior. The enquiry exemplifies the strengthening of riser as very potential idea and suitable in marine structures to explore oil and gas in deep sea.

Ultrasonic Flaw Detection in Composite Materials Using SSP-MPSD Algorithm

  • Due to the inherent inhomogeneous and anisotropy nature of the composite materials, the detection of internal defects in these materials with non-destructive techniques is an important requirement both for quality checks during the production phase and in service inspection during maintenance operations. The estimation of the time-of-arrival (TOA) and/or time-of-flight (TOF) of the ultrasonic echoes is essential in ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT). In this paper, we used split-spectrum processing (SSP) combined with matching pursuit signal decomposition (MPSD) to develop a dedicated ultrasonic detection system. SSP algorithm is used for Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) enhancement, and the MPSD algorithm is used to decompose backscattered signals into a linear expansion of chirplet echoes and estimate the chirplet parameters. Therefore, the combination of SSP and MPSD (SSP-MPSD) presents a powerful technique for ultrasonic NDT. The SSP algorithm is achieved by using Gaussian band pass filters. Then, MPSD algorithm uses the Maximum Likelihood Estimation. The good performance of the proposed method is experimentally verified using ultrasonic traces acquired from three specimens of carbon fibre reinforced polymer multi-layered composite materials (CFRP).

The optimal discharging algorithm for Vehicle to the Grid (V2G) operation has been adopted to maintain the discharging current of 1C. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system. Experiment waveforms confirm the proposed functionality of the charging system.

Liquid-Liquid Equilibrium and Physical Properties of Aqueous Mixtures of Poly (Ethylene Glycol) 3000 with Tri-Potassium Citrate at Different pH: Experiment, Correlation and Thermodynamic Modeling

  • The new experimental data of liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) of aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) 3000 + tri-potassium citrate at different pH were presented. It was found that an increase in pH resulted in the expansion of the two-phase region. The TLL and STL increased with increasing the pH values. The Merchuk equation can be appropriately employed to correlate the binodal curves and also the tie-line compositions were adjusted to both the Othmer-Tobias and Bancroft equations. In order to calculate the compositions of the phase and the ends of the tie-lines, density and refractive indices as two physical properties were used. Finally, the extended UNIQUAC, UNIFAC, Virial-(Mobalegholeslam & Bakhshi) and modified UNIQUAC-FV were used to measure the phase equilibria at different pH. The results of the models suggested that it can be used quite well to correlate the LLE in an aqueous solution of polymer-salt.

Partially Carbonized Poly (Acrylic Acid) Grafted to Carboxymethyl Cellulose as an Advanced Binder for Si Anode in Li-ion Batteries

  • To improve the performance of Si anodes in advanced Li-ion batteries, the design of the electrode plays a critical role, especially due to the large volumetric expansion in the Si anode during Li insertion. In our study, we used a simple fabrication method to prepare Si-based electrodes by grafting polyacrylic acid (PAA) to a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder (CMC-g-PAA). The procedure consists of first mixing nano-sized Si and the binders (CMC and PAA), and then coating the slurry on a Cu foil. The carbon network was formed via carbonization of the binders i.e., by a simple heat treatment of the electrode. The carbon network in the electrode is mechanically and electrically robust, which leads to higher electrical conductivity and better mechanical property. This explains its long cycle performance without the addition of a conducting agent (for example, carbon). Therefore, the partially carbonized CMC-g-PAA binder presented in this study represents a new feasible approach to produce Si anodes for use in advanced Li-ion batteries.

PVA를 이용한 Solution-Polymerization 합성법에 의하여 제조된 Mullite-Cordierite 복합체의 소결특성 (Characteristic of Sintering of Mullite-Cordierite Composite by a Solution-Polymerization Route Employing PVA)

  • PVA론 이용한 solution-polymerization법에 의해 mullite싸 cordierite 및 mullite-cordierite 복합분말을 합성한 실험 결과를 바탕으펀, 소결조제로서 $TiO_2$를 액상 첨가한 후 mullite-cordierite 합성분말을 제조하고 그때의 소결특성을 조사하였다. 각 조성에 대해 $1300^{\circ}C$에서 하소한 후 planetary mill로 4시간 분쇄를 행하여 합성분말을 준비하였다. 이 합성분말을 사용하여 cordierite의 분해가 일어나지 않는 $1450^{\circ}C$로 소결을 행하였다. 그 결과, mullite $100\%$인 조성에서는 소결시간에 관계없이 원활한 소결이 이루어지지 않았으나, cordierite의 양이 증가함에 따라 상대밀도가 $98\%$ 이상으로 증가하며 소결성이 향상되어졌다 또한 소결시간이 증가함에 따라 mullite와 cordierite의 비율이 50 : 50인 조성의 경우, 16시간 소결하였을 때 복합체치 치밀화로 인해 190MPa의 강도값과 $3.07{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$의 열팽창계수값을 나타내었다. 하지만 그 이상의 조성에In-1는 cordierite로 인한 액상의 과다생성으로 인해 소결특성은 좋지 않았다. 소결조제로서의 $TiO_2$ 첨가 영향에 대한 조사에서도 $TiO_2$의 함량이 증가함에 따라 mullite의 주상으로의 성장자 cordierite의 액상 증가가 더 빠르게 일어남이 확인되었지만, 이 때문에 $5wt\%$에서는 오히려 특성값이 저하됨이 확인되었다.

다양한 조성 변화에 따른 4성분계 폴리이미드 필름 제조와 물성분석 (Synthesis and Characterization of 4-Component Polyimide Films with Various Diamine and Dianhydride Compositions)

  • 다양한 조성의 PMDA/BPDA/p-PDA/ODA로 이루어진 폴리아믹산을 합성하여 다양한 조성의 4성분계 폴리이미드 필름을 열적 이미드화 공정을 통해 제조하였다. 제조된 폴리이미드 필름의 화학 구조 및 열적 기계적 특성은 퓨리에 변환 적외선 분광기(FT-IR), 열중량 분석기(TGA), 열 기계 분석기(TMA), 동 역학적 거동 분석기(DMA), 그리고 만능 인장시험기(UTM) 등을 이용하여 조사하였다. 강직한 구조의 PMDA와 p-PDA의 함량이 증가할수록 인장강도, 탄성률 및 열적 특성이 향상되었고, 상대적으로 유연한 구조의 BPDA와 ODA의 함량이 증가할수록 신장률과 흡습률이 각각 증가하였다. 특히, 열팽창계수(CTE)값은 PMDA : BPDA : p-PDA : ODA의 조성이 5 : 5 : 4 : 6 조성일 때 동박의 CTE와 유사한 결과를 나타내었으며, 이와 같은 조성을 갖는 4성분계 폴리이미드 필름의 경우 유연성 회로 기판의 flexible copper clad laminates (FCCL)을 위한 기본 필름으로 적용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
