  • Aluminium nitride thin film was deposited on Au electrode and Si substrate by radio frequency sputtering system. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was utilized to identify the AlN phase, and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to obtain the images of surface morphology and roughness value of AlN thin film. The result of XRD and AFM measurement showed that the AlN thin film has strong c-axs orientation and smooth surface. In order to investigate piezoelectric response and polarization properties along to the direction of electric field, PFM (Piezoresponse Force Microscope) system was used, and the images of piezoelectric response due to switching of polarization was observed by PFM.

  • A polarization fluorescence correlation spectroscopy system based on a confocal microscope was built to study the rotational and translational diffusion of CdSe/CdS quantum rods (Q-rods), with the same and different polarization states between the polarizer and the analyzer (i.e. the XXX and XYY states). The rotational diffusion amplitude showed the dependences on polarization of $0.75{\pm}0.05$ in the XXX state and $0.26{\pm}0.03$ in the XYY state, when the translational diffusion amplitude was 1. The diffusion coefficients of the Q-rods were found based on their translational and rotational diffusion times in the two polarization states, in solutions with viscosity ranging from 0.9 to 6.9 cP. The translational and rotational diffusion coefficients ranged from $1.5{\times}10^{-11}$ to $2.6{\times}10^{-12}m^2s^{-1}$ and from $2.9{\times}10^5$ to $5.6{\times}10^4s^{-1}$, respectively.

  • Domain structure and polarization switching in (001)-oriented $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-x%PbTiO_3$ (PMN-x%PT) crystals for x=20 and 35at% have been investigated in-situ by scanning force microscope (SFM) in a piezoresponse mode under a step DC electrical voltage. In the initial annealed condition, polar nano domains (PND) and domain striations oriented along {110} were observed in x=20 and x=35, respectively. For x=20, domain switching occurs by heterogeneous nucleation, where nucleation is not confined in the vicinity of domain boundaries, but rather can occur throughout the crystal volume. However, for x=35, domain switching tends to be preferentially initiated near pre-existing twin boundaries. With increasing the applying voltage, the nuclei density increased and assembled into {110} striations, indicating a stress-accommodated domain growth process. At higher voltage, nucleation occurs heterogeneously throughout the crystal volume.

  • A sub-nanometer resolution Scanning Nonlinear Dielectric Microscope (SNDM) was developed for observing ferroelectric polarization. We also demonstrate that the resolution of SNDM is higher than that of a conventional piezo-response imaging. Secondly, we report new SNDM technique detecting higher nonlinear dielectric constants $\varepsilon$$\_$3333/ and $\varepsilon$$\_$33333/. Higher order nonlinear dielectric imaging provides higher lateral and depth resolution. Finally, the formation of artificial small inverted domain is reported to demonstrate that SNDM system is very useful as a nano-domain engineering tool. The nano-size domain dots were successfully formed in LiTaO$_3$ single crystal. This means that we can obtain a very high density ferroelectric data storage with the density above 1T-bits/inch$^2$.

  • In this study, electrochemical methods were used to determine the optimum protection potential of S355ML steel for the cathodic protection of offshore wind-turbine-tower substructures. The results of potentiodynamic polarization experiments indicated that the anodic polarization curve did not represent a passivation behavior, while under the cathodic polarization concentration, polarization was observed due to the reduction of dissolved oxygen, followed by activation polarization by hydrogen evolution as the potential shifted towards the active direction. The concentration polarization region was found to be located between approximately -0.72 V and -1.0 V, and this potential range is considered to be the potential range for cathodic protection using the impressed current cathodic protection method. The results of the potentiostatic experiments at various potentials revealed that varying current density tended to become stable with time. Surface characterization after the potentiostatic experiment for 1200 s, by using a scanning electron microscope and a 3D analysis microscope confirmed that corrosion damage occurred as a result of anodic dissolution under an anodic polarization potential range of 0 to -0.50 V, which corresponds to anodic polarization. Under potentials corresponding to cathodic polarization, however, a relatively intact surface was observed with the formation of calcareous deposits. As a result, the potential range between -0.8 V and -1.0 V, which corresponds to the concentration polarization region, was determined to be the optimum potential region for impressed current cathodic protection of S355ML steel.

  • This study covers the stages of testing whether the azo dye with chemical name (E)-5-[(4-(benzyl(methyl)amino)phenyl)diazenyl]-1,4-dimethyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium zinc (II) chloride (DMT), known as Maxilon Red GRL in the dye industry, can be used as an anticorrosive feasible inhibitory agent, especially in industrial areas other than carpet, yarn and fibre dyeing. These test stages consist of the electrochemical measurement techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) for diverse concentrations and durations. The adsorption of the viewed DMT molecule on the mild steel surface obeyed the Langmuir isotherm. The zero charge potential (PZC) of mild steel was also found to assess the inhibition mechanism in containing DMT solution. The inhibition performance of DMT on the mild steel in a 1.0 M HCl solution was also investigated using methods such as metal microscope, atomic force microscope (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM).

  • In this study, we have made the large holographic surface relief gratings on amorphous chalcogenide $As_{40}$$Ge_{10}$$Se_{15}$$S_{35}$ films by two beam interference using a He-Ne laser(632.8nm) light. The film thickness was about 0.6$\mu\textrm{m}$, we could magnify beam size by using beam expander. We made use $90^{\circ}$ holder which was made of reflection mirror and sample. Formed the surface relief structures were investigated using optical microscope. The diffraction efficiency was obtained by measuring +lst order intensity. In addition we investigated grating formation and diffraction efficiency as a function of polarization states which is linear or circular polarization. The results indicate that the grating was formed by linear polarized beam is better clear than that by circular polarized beam.
