A catalytic plasma reactor was employed for the oxidation of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) classified as a volatile organic compound (VOC). Copper oxide (Cu : 0.5% (w/w)) supported on a multichannel porous ceramic consisting of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was used as a catalyst, which was directly exposed to the plasma created in it. The effects of discharge voltage and reaction temperature on the concentrations of IPA and its byproducts were examined to understand the behavior of the catalytic plasma reactor. Without thermal insulation, the reactor temperature increased up to $120^{\circ}C$ at an applied voltage of 17 kV (discharge power : 28 W), and the IPA at a flow rate of $1L\;min^{-1}$ ($O_2$ : 10% (v/v); IPA : 1000 ppm) was completely removed. At temperatures below $120^{\circ}C$, however, besides the desirable product $CO_2$, several unwanted byproducts such as acetone, formaldehyde and CO were also formed from IPA. On the other hand, when the reactor was thermally insulated, the plasma discharge increased the temperature up to $265^{\circ}C$ under the same condition and most of IPA was oxidized to $CO_2$. Without loading CuO on the ceramic support, the plasma discharge in the thermally insulated reactor produced nearly equal amounts of $CO_2$ and CO. On comparison, with the catalyst alone (temperature : $265^{\circ}C$), more than 70% of the removed IPA was simply converted into another type of VOC (acetone), indicating that the catalyst assisted by the plasma is more effective in the oxidation of IPA than that of the catalyst-alone process.
Helium-oxygen plasma treatments were conducted to modify poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PIT) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) warp knitted fabrics under atmospheric pressure. Lubricant and contamination removals by plasma etching effect were examined by weight loss $(\%)$ measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Surface oxidation by plasma treatments was revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, resulting in formation of hydrophilic groups and moisture regain $(\%)$ enhancement. Low-stress mechanical properties (evaluated by Kawabata evaluation system) and bulk properties (air permeability and bust strength) were enhanced by plasma treatment. Increasing interfiber and interyarn frictions might play important roles in enhancing surface property changes by plasma etching effect, and then changing low-stress mechanical properties and bulk properties for both fabrics.
Failure mechanisms were investigated for the two layer thermal barrier coatings consisting of NiCrAlY bond coat and $ZrO_2$-8wt.% $Y_2O_3$ ceramic coating during cyclic oxidation. $Al_2O_3$ developed at the ceramic coating/bond coat interface first, followed by the Cr/Ni rich oxides such as $NiCr_2O_4$ and $Ni(Al, Cr)_2O_4$ during cyclic oxidation. It was observed that the spalling of ceramic coatings took place primarily within the NiCrAlY bond coat oxidation products or at the interface between the bond coat oxidation products and zirconia based ceramic coating or the bond coat. It was also observed that the fracture within these oxidation products occurred with the formation of $Ni(Cr, Al)_2O_4$ spinel or Cr/Ni rich oxides. It was therefore concluded that the formation of these oxides was a life-limiting event for the thermal barrier coatings.
Nano-multilayered, crystalline AlTiSiN thin films were deposited on WC-TiC-Co substrates by the cathodic arc plasma deposition. The deposited film consisted of wurtzite-type AlN, NaCl-type TiN, and tetragonal $Ti_2N$ phases. Their oxidation characteristics were studied at 800 and $900^{\circ}C$ for up to 20 h in air. The WC-TiC-Co oxidized fast with large weight gains. By contrast, the AlTiSiN film displayed superior oxidation resistance, due mainly to formation of the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$-rich surface oxide layer, below which an ($Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $SiO_2$)-intermixed scale existed. Their oxidation progressed primarily by the outward diffusion of nitrogen, combined with the inward transport of oxygen that gradually reacted with Al, Ti, and Si in the film.
Long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) are transported into cells via plasma transporters, are activated to fatty acyl-CoA by fatty acyl-CoA synthase (ACS), and enter mitochondria via the carnitine system (CPT1/CACT/CPT2). The mitochondrial carnitine system plays an obligatory role in β-oxidation of LCFAs by catalyzing their transport into the mitochondrial matrix. Fatty acyl-CoAs are oxidized via the β-oxidation pathway, which results in the production of acetyl-CoA. The acetyl-CoA can be imported into the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle for oxidation in the mitochondrial matrix or can be used for malonyl-CoA synthesis by acetyl-CoA carboxylase 2 (ACC2) in the cytoplasm. In skeletal muscle, ACC2 catalyzes the carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to form malonyl-CoA, which is a potent endogenous inhibitor of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1). Thus, ACC2 indirectly inhibits the influx of fatty acids into the mitochondria. Fatty acid metabolism can also be regulated by malonyl-CoA-mediated inhibition of CPT1.
Dielectric thin films for TFT(thin film transistor)s, such as silicon nitride$(Si_3N_4)$ and silicon oxide$(SiO_2)$, are usually deposited at $200~300^{\circ}C$. In this study, authors have tried to form dielectric films not by deposition but by oxidation with ECR(Electron Cyclotron Resonance) oxygen plasma, to improve the interface properties was not intensionally heated during oxidation. THe oxidation was performed consecutively without breaking vacuum after the deposition of a-Si: H films on the substrate to prevent the introduction of impurities. In this study, especially pulse mode of microwave power has been firstly tried during FCR oxygen plasma formation. Compared with the case of the continuous wave mode, the oxidation with the pulsed ECR results in higher quality silicon oxide$SiO_X$ films in terms of stoichiometry of bonding, dielectric constants and surface roughness. Especially the surface roughness of the pulsed ECR oxide films dramatically decreased to one-third of that of the continuous wave mode cases.
Objectives: This study investigated the effects of Scutellariae Radix extract (SRE) on lipids metabolism, oxidation and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in rats fed highly oxidized fat. Methods: To induce obesity, male Sprague‐Dawley rats were fed a highly oxidized fat diet for 10 weeks. SRE at 100 mg/kg were administered orally to obesity-induced rats for 6 weeks, and their lipid metabolism, oxidation and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines were examined. Results: The concentrations of free fatty acid, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol in plasma decreased in SRE-treated groups, although the difference was not significant between control and SRE-treated groups, while that of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol significantly increased in SRE group. The concentrations of total cholesterol and triglyceride in the liver were tended to decrease in SRE-treated group. The concentrations of thiobarbituric acid in plasma and liver were lower in SRE group than in control group. The levels of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase in plasma were decreased in SRE group. Activities of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in liver were tended to increase in the SRE group. The plasma concentrations of interleukin $(IL)-1{\beta}$, tumor necrosis factor $(TNF)-{\alpha}$ and IL-6 were lower in SRE group than in control group, while that of IL-10 was higher. The liver concentrations of $IL-1{\beta}$, $TNF-{\alpha}$, and IL-6 were tended to decrease while that of IL-10 tended to increase in SRE group. Conclusions: Finally SRE could be used in the production of nutraceuticals for lowering lipids and exerting anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory effects in obesity rats fed highly oxidized rat.
Combined removal of n-heptane and carbon monoxide (CO) using a plasma-catalytic process was investigated. The performance of the plasma-catalytic process was compared with that of the catalyst-alone process to characterize the decomposition of n-heptane and CO with the operation parameters such as the type of catalyst, reaction temperature, and discharge power. From several sets of experiments, it was found that the decomposition efficiency of n-heptane mainly depended on the specific input energy rather than the reactor temperature, whereas the oxidation of CO on both the energy density and the reaction temperature. The results conducted over several metal oxide catalysts exhibited that the decomposition efficiency of n-heptane was in the order: $Pd/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ru/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3{\approx}Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. Especially, $Pd/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst did hardly generate CO as a byproduct during the decomposition of n-heptane under an appropriate condition, revealing $CO_2$ selectivity of nearly 100%. The CO oxidation efficiency was largely affected by the type of catalyst ($Pd/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ru/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$). At temperatures below $180^{\circ}C$, the plasma-catalytic process was more effective in the oxidation of CO, while above $180^{\circ}C$, the catalytic process resulted in slightly higher CO oxidation efficiency.
Although estrogen is known to playa role in fatty acid metabolism, it remains unclear whether fatty acid oxidation in mature female rats differs from fatty acid oxidation in peri-pubertal young rats. In this study, we measured fatty acid metabolism in the skeletal muscles and livers of 5 and 50 weeks old male and female rats. The rate of palmitate oxidation in the liver and gastrocnemius red in the 50-week-old female rats were elevated as compared to the 5-week-old females, whereas there were no differences in the male rats. The rate of palmitate oxidation in the gastrocnemius red was correlated inversely with intra-abdominal fat mass in the 5-week-old male and female rats, whereas the palmitate oxidation rate was positively correlated with fat mass in the liver and gastrocnemius red in the 50-week-old rats. HOMA-IR and plasma insulin levels were positively correlated with intra-abdominal fat mass in the pooled 50-week-old male and female rats, but this correlation was not apparent in 5-week-old rats. In summary, the rate of fatty acid oxidation measured in the middle-aged adult female rats was significantly higher than those measured in the peri-pubertal young female rats. This difference may be attributed to the influence of ovarian hormones.
In the present study, the formation of hollow Cu oxide nanoparticles through the oxidation process at temperatures from 200 to $300^{\circ}C$ has been studied by transmission electron microscopy with Cu nanoparticles produced by the plasma arc discharge method. The Cu nanoparticles had a thin oxide layer on the surface at room temperature and the thickness of this oxide layer increased during oxidation in atmosphere at $200-300^{\circ}C$ However, the oxide layer consisted of $Cu_2O$ and CuO after oxidation at $200^{\circ}C$ whereas this layer was comprised of only CuO after oxidation at $300^{\circ}C$ On the other hand, hollow Cu oxide nanoparticles are obtained as a result of vacancy aggregation in the oxidation processes, resulting from the rapid outward diffusion of metal ions through the oxide layer during the oxidation process.
