Based on the general theory of elasticity, the static behavior of 2-2 cement-based piezoelectric curved composites is investigated. The actuator consists of 2 cement layers and 1 piezoelectric layer. Considering the electrode layer between the cement layer and the piezoelectric layer as the elastic layer, the exact solutions of the mechanical and electrical fields of the curved composites are obtained by utilizing the Airy stress function method. Furthermore, the theoretical results are compared with the FEM results and good agreements (with almost no error) are obtained, thus proving the validity of this study. Furthermore, the influence of certain parameters is discussed, which can help to get the desired displacements and stresses. Finally, it is seen that the analytical model established in this paper works well, which could benefit the design of this kind of cement-based smart devices.
This paper presents a feasibility study of flexible piezoelectric paint for use in wide-band low-profile surface-mount or embeddable ultrasonic sensor for in situ structural health monitoring. Piezoelectric paint is a piezoelectric composite with 0-3 connectivity. Because of its ease of application, piezoelectric paint can be readily fabricated into sensing element with complex pattern. This study examines the characteristics of piezoelectric paint in acoustic emission signal and ultrasonic guided wave sensing. A series of ultrasonic tests including pitch catch and pencil break tests were performed to validate the ultrasonic wave sensing capability of piezoelectric paint. The results of finite element simulation of ultrasonic wave propagation, and acoustic emission generated by a pencil lead break on an aluminum plate are also presented in this paper along with corresponding experimental data. Based on the preliminary experimental results, the piezoelectric paint appears to offer a promising sensing material for use in real-time monitoring of crack initiation and propagation in both metallic and composite structures.

PMN-PT, a piezoelectric single crystal, has many useful applications such as sensors and actuators. In this paper, all the elastic, piezoelectric, and dielectric constants of the PMN-32%PT single crystals were measured by the resonance method. For the rhombohedral symmetry, a total of twelve independent material constants were measured such as six elastic compliance constants at constant electric field, two dielectric constants at constant stress, and four piezoelectric constants d. Seven sets of crystal samples of each different geometry were prepared for the measurement of length-thickness extensional, thickness extensional, radial, length extensional and thickness shear modes of vibration, respectively. In order to check the validity of the measurement, experimental impedance spectrum of the PMN-PT crystal was compared with numerical data spectrum calculated with the measured material constants. The good agreement between the two spectra confirmed validity of the results in this paper.

In this paper, An analysis on the intelligence system for a biped walking robot(BWR) was made and its results were applied to the BWR. Various sensors were applied to the developed BWR for autonomous and intelligent walk in unknown environments. To measure the distance between the object and BWR, ultrasonic sensor and infrared-rays sensor were used. To identity surrounding environments, vision system was used. Gyro sensor was used to control the posture of BWR. Also, piezoelectricity sensor was used to identity the pressure of foot landing on the surface. Sensors applied to the robot have measurement errors according to noises or walking environments. To improve the function of these sensors, influences of noise or sensing errors were minimized using a sensor fusion scheme. A gait test using the sensor fusion system was performed, and its results are presented.

The piezoelectric coupling in piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters with load resistance induces electrical damping as well as increase in the system stiffness. Starting from analytically deriving the explicit relations through governing equations in the frequency domain, this work identifies the characteristics of the electrically induced damping mechanism and shows that the electrically induced damping serves as a structural hysteretic damping on condition that a piezoelectric vibration energy harvester is excited at its short-circuit resonant frequency and its load resistor is optimally impedance- matched at the same time. Finally, it is analytically verified that the equivalence of a mechanical and an electrically induced damping ratio is required for the maximum power generation at a load resistor, which was claimed in some literature.

This paper reports a piezoelectric paper made with cellulose. Since cellulose has merits in terms of biodegradability, biocompatibility, abundance in nature, lightweight and cheap, piezoelectric paper can bring a broad technological impact in many areas, for example, sensors, actuators, speakers, microphones and microelectromechanical systems. Fabrication and characterization of the piezoelectric paper are illustrated and its possibility for acoustic applications is addressed with some preliminary device demonstrations.

Cellulose based electro-active paper(EAPap) is considered as a new smart material which has a potential to be used for biomimetic actuators and sensors. Beside of the natural abundance, cellulose EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. When the external stress is applied to EAPap, it can generate the electrical output due to its piezoelectric property. Using piezoelectric behavior of EAPap, we studied the feasibility of EAPap as mechanical strain sensor applications and compared to commercial strain sensor. By measuring the induced output voltage from the thin piezoelectric cellulose EAPap under static and dynamic force, we propose cellulose EAPap film as a potential strain sensor material.
The present article encompasses a nonlinear finite element (FE) and genetic algorithm (GA) based optimal vibration energy harvesting from nonprismatic piezo-laminated cantilever beams. Three cases of cross section profiles (such as linear, parabolic and cubic) are modelled to analyse the geometric nonlinear effects on the output responses such as displacement, voltage, and power. The simultaneous effects of taper ratios (such as breadth and height taper) on the output power are also studied. The FE based nonlinear dynamic equation of motion has been solved by an implicit integration method (i.e., Newmark method in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method). Besides this, a real coded GA based constrained optimization scheme has also been proposed to determine the best set of design variables for optimal harvesting of power within the safe limits of beam stress and PZT breakdown voltage.

Lithium niobate ($LN:LiNbO_3$) is a compound of niobium, lithium and oxygen. The characteristics of LN are piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity and photoelectricity, and which is widely used in surface acoustic wave (SAW). To manufacture LN devices, the LN surface should be a smooth surface and defect-free because of optical property, but the LN material is processed difficult b traditional processes such as grinding and mechanical polishing (MP) because of its brittleness. To decrease defects, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) was applied to the LN wafer. In this study, the suitable parameters such as down force and relative velocity, were investigated for the LN CMP process To improve roughness, the LN CMP was performed using the parameters that were the highest removal rate among process parameters. And, evaluation of optical property was performed by the optical reflectance.
Using the theory of linear piezoelectricity, the problem of two layered strip with a piezoelectric ceramic bonded to an elastic material containing a finite interface crack is considered. The out-of-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loadings are simultaneously applied to the strip. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to a pair of dual integral equations, which is then expressed in terms of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The stress intensity factor is determined, and numerical analyses for several materials are performed and discussed.
