Climate in the year of 2000 was characterized as a long severe drought in tile spring, unusually high and low temperature in summer, two times of typoons, and floods by heavy rains in fall. Rice leaf and panicle blast and bacterial grain rot occurred severely comparing with 1999 and Bipolaris leaf spot spread over tile country. Phytophthora blight and anthracnose in red-pepper became epidemic especially in the late season causing severe yield losses. Tomato fusaruim wilt, CGMMV, powdery mildew, and sudden wilt syndrom of cucurbits and strawberry powdery mildew were also severe in 2000. In garlic, sclerotium rot occurred severely mainly due to the frequent rainfalls in planting time and much snowfalls in 1999's winter. Spring potato had severe infection of viruses due to a long spring drought, and fall potato had high incidence of bacterial soft rot and bacterial wilt due to fall floods by heavy rains. In sweet potato fusarium wilt was the most severe as in other year. Disease incidence of apple and pear trees was rotatively mild compared with previous years. In wheat and barley, Gibberella petch rarely occurred because of spring drought.

Chryseobacterium sp. strain T16E-39, isolated from roots of a tomato plant, promotes plant growth and suppresses phytophthora blight and bacterial wilt diseases. The complete genome of strain T16E-39 consists of a circular chromosome with 4,872,888 base pairs with a G + C content of 35.22%. The genome includes 4,289 coding sequences, 15 rRNAs, and 71 tRNAs. We detected genes involved in phosphate solubilization, phytohormone regulation, antioxidant activity, chitin degradation, and the type IX secretion system (T9SS) that may be related to growth promotion and disease suppression in plants.

In order to develop a new microbial fungicide using endophytic bacteria for the control of anthracnoses occurring on various crops, a total of 260 bacterial strains were isolated from fresh tissues of 5 plant species. After they were cultured in broth medium, their antifungal activities were tested for in vivo antifungal activity against cucumber anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum orbiculare. As the results, liquid cultures of 28 strains showed potent antifungal activities more than $90\%$ against cucumber anthracnose. At 3-fold dilutions of liquid cultures, 18 strains inhibited the development of cucumber anthracnose of more than $70\%$. They were further tested for in vivo antifungal activity against red pepper anthracnose caused by C. coccodes and in vitro antifungal activity against C. acutatum, a fungal agent causing red pepper anthracnose. Among 18 strains, a bacterial strain EB215 isolated from cucumber roots displayed the most potent antifungal activity against Colletotrichum species. It was identified as Burkholderia cepacia based on its physiological and biochemical characteristics, Biolog test and 16S rDNA gene sequence. It also controlled effectively the development of rice blast (Magnaporthe grisea), rice sheath blight (Corticium sasaki), tomato gray mold (Botrytis cinerea), and tomato late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Studies on the characterization of antifungal substances produced by B. cepacia EB215 are in progress.
The methanol extract of Chloranthus japonicus roots effectively controlled the development of rice blast(Magnaporthe grisea), rice sheath blight(Corticium sasaki), tomato pay mold(Btrytis cinerea), tomato late blight(Phytophthora infestans), and wheat leaf rust(Puccinia recondita). From the methanol extract of C. japonicus roots, three antifungal substances were isolated. Their chemical structures were determined to be shizukanols B, C, and D mainly by mass and NMR spectral data. Among the three substances, shizukanol C showed the strongest inhibitory activity against mycelial growth of the plant pathogenic fungi tested; it completely inhibited mycelial growth of M. grisea. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and C. acutatum at concentrations of more than $12.5{\mu}g$/ and P. infestans at concentrations of more than $3.13{\mu}g/m\ell$. They also controlled effectively the development of rice blast and wheat leaf rust. On the other hand, they caused phytotoxic symptoms on barley leaves and inhibited the growth of duckweed (Lemna paucicostata) with $EC_{50}$ values of $30.0{\mu}g/m\ell$ for shizukanol B, $49.9{\mu}g/m\ell$ for shizukanol C, and $154{\mu}g/m\ell$ for shizukanol D. In addition, shizukanol C showed an insecticidal activity against brown planthopper (Nilaparavata lugens), peen peach aphid (Myzus persicae), diamond-back moth (Plutella xylostella), and tobacco cutworm (Spodoptera litura) of the 5 arthropod pests tested with mortality values of more than 60% at a concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/m\ell$.
This study was conducted to achieve basal information for the development of tomato cultivars with disease resistances through marker-assisted backcross (MAB). Ten inbred lines with TYLCV, late blight, bacterial wilt, or powdery mildew resistance and four adapted inbred lines with superior horticultural traits were collected, which can be useful as the donor parents and recurrent parents in MAB, respectively. Inbred lines collected were evaluated by molecular markers and bioassay for confirming their disease resistances. To develop DNA markers for selecting recurrent parent genome (background selection) in MAB, a total of 108 simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer sets (nine per chromosome at average) were selected from the tomato reference genetic maps posted on SOL Genomics Network. Genetic similarity and relationships among the inbred lines were assessed using a total of 303 polymorphic SSR markers. Similarity coefficient ranged from 0.33 to 0.80; the highest similarity coefficient (0.80) was found between bacterial wilt-resistant donor lines '10BA333' and '10BA424', and the lowest (0.33) between a late blight resistant-wild species L3708 (S. pimpinelliforium L.) and '10BA424'. UPGMA analysis grouped the inbred lines into three clusters based on the similarity coefficient 0.58. Most of the donor lines of the same resistance were closely related, indicating the possibility that these lines were developed using a common resistance source. Parent combinations (donor parent ${\times}$ recurrent parent) showing appropriate levels of genetic distance and SSR marker polymorphism for MAB were selected based on the dendrogram. These combinations included 'TYR1' ${\times}$ 'RPL1' for TYLCV, '10BA333' or '10BA424' ${\times}$ 'RPL2' for bacterial wilt, and 'KNU12' ${\times}$ 'AV107-4' or 'RPL2' for powdery mildew. For late blight, the wild species resistant line 'L3708' was distantly related to all recurrent parental lines, and a suitable parent combination for MAB was 'L3708' ${\times}$ 'AV107-4', which showed a similarity coefficient of 0.41 and 45 polymorphic SSR markers.

The average and maximum temperature were $29.5^{\circ}C$ and $33.2^{\circ}C$ at 2:00 p.m. respectively, in the plastic-film house covered with shade net, and both of temperature were lower $0.6^{\circ}C$ and $1.3^{\circ}C$ than those of conventional shade. Light transmittance was 14% in the plastic-film house, while 9.9% in conventional shade during growing season from May to October. Withering time of aboveground part was on October 3rd in conventional shade with 60% of withering leaf, while it was on November 10th with 3.7% of withering leaf in the plastic-film house, about 40 days longer survival. The main disease incidence were 15% of anthracnose, 17% of leaf spot, 5% of phytophthora blight and 3% of gray mold in the conventional shade, while 0 ~ 0.1% disease incidence and 95% of emergence rate in the plastic-film house. The growth in the aboveground and underground part of ginseng was totally better, particularly characteristics affecting yield such as root length, main root length and diameter in the plastic-film house. The fresh weight was increased by 128% compared to the conventional shade and harvested roots per $3.3m^2$ were 36 roots in the conventional shade and 58 roots in the plastic-film house and futhermore yield per $3.3m^2$ was increased by 216% compared to the conventional shade. As covering materials, the rice straw in the plastic-film house was excellent. The ginsenoside contents affecting the quality of ginseng were higher in the plastic-film house indicating 0.333% of Rg1, 0.672% of Rb1, 0.730% of Rc and rate of red rusty root was less than 4.0 ~ 6.1%. Above the results, the quality of ginseng grown in the plastic-film house covered with shade net was improved than that of the conventional shade.
The objective of this study was to establish the decision criteria of land suitability for red pepper using soil morphological and physical properties. The investigation was carried out in Jechen, Goesan, Euiseong, Andong, Gochang and Pyongchang district in Korea. The obtained results showed that factors related to the decision criteria of the land suitability for red pepper cultivation were soil texture, soil drainage class, land slope, available soil depth and stone content. The criteria of the best suitable soil for red pepper was coarse loamy, well drainage class, C-slope (7-15%), 10-20% gravel content and available soil depth deeper than 100 cm. Also in the best suitable soil, hardpan was located below 100 cm from the soil surface. Outbreak rate of phytophthora blight occurred well in the soils with high clay content, poor drainage class, low land slope and low gravel content. Database determining the decision criteria of the land suitability for red pepper in Jinchen-gun was established by Arc info GIS tool.

In strawberry production, among others, the high incidence of diseases by pathogenic fungi resulting in the reduction of fruit yield and quality requires the development of eco-friendly management systems rather than chemical sprays to control them. The diameter of colonies grown in media at $25^{\circ}C$ for 5 days was measured to evaluate the in vitro inhibition of mycelial growth of 5 pathogenic fungi by irradiation with ultraviolet (UV-C, 264 nm). The mycelial growth of 5 pathogenic fungi was inhibited in potato dextrose agar (PDA) by the irradiation of UV-C for 1 hour a day, and was dramatically inhibited by the irradiation of UV-C for 9-12 h a day. The irradiation of UV-C for 9-12 h a day inhibited completely the growth of the late blight pathogen, Phytophthora cactorum. The irradiation distance of 40 to 50 cm was effective for the inhibition of mycelial growth of fungi. The mycelial growth of fungi without pre-incubation was inhibited strongly by UV-C irradiation compared to fungi pre-incubated for 2 days without light. The mycelia growth of Colletotrichum gloeosprioides and Fusarium oxysporum was inhibited strongly by UV-C irradiation in vegetable 8 juice agar compared to PDA.
Incidence of soilborne diseases, as a major cause of failure of continuous monocropping becomes severe in recent years. For examples, recent epidemics of club root of chinese cabbage, white rot of garlic, bacterial wilt of potato, pepper phytophthora blight, tomato fusarium wilt and CGMMV of watermelon are the diseases that require urgent control measures. Reasons for the severe incidence of soilborne diseases are the simplified cropping system or continuous monocropping associated with allocation of major production areas of certain crop and year-round cultivation system that results in rapid degradation of soil environment. Neglect of breeding for disease resistance relative to giving much emphasis on high yield and good quality, and cultural methods putting first on the use of chemical fertilizers are thought to be the reason. Counter-measures against soilborne disease epidemics would become most effective when the remedies are seeded for individual causes. As long-term strategies, development of rational cropping system which fits local cropping and economic condition, development and supply of cultivars resistant to multiple diseases, and improvement of soil environment by soil conditioning are suggested. In short-term strategies, simple and economical soil-disinfestation technology, and quick and accurate forecasting methods for soilborne diseases are urgent matter far development. for these, extensive supports are required in governmental level for rearing soilborne disease specialists and activation of collaborating researches to solve encountering problems of soilborne diseases.

This study was conducted to investigate the soil mulching effect on growth and yield of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. The number of stem, stem diameter, and fresh weight of aerial part in black poly-ethylene film and transparent poly-ethylene film mulched condition were higher than those of non-mulching and rice-straw mulching. Number of flowers were high in the order of non-mulching, rice-straw, trans-P. E. film, and black P. E. film. Yield of underground part was higher in mulching condition than that of non-mulching. Dry rhizome yield in black P. E. film mulching was significantly high to compare with the other treatments. There was lower disease incidence of Phytophthora blight in trans-P. E and black P. E. film compare with the other treatments but any difference was not observed in essential oil content of rhizome. Significant positive correlation was found between rhizome weight and fresh weight of aerial part. It was also shown that the fresh weight of aerial part was greatly dependent on the number of stems and stem diameter.
