Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai has been reported to liver function improvement effect as functional materials for food and medicine. On these facts, biological activity and safety test were conducted to evaluate biological activities of the fruit petiole and root extracts of H. dulcis as a potential cosmeceutical ingredient. Cosmeceutica activities of different extracts were examined by l.l-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical generation, the ABTS+ cation decolorization, tyrosinase activity, collagenase activity and elastase activity compared with the properties of the commercial antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and L-ascorbic acid (AA). The antioxidant activities HDFW, HDFE, HDRW and HDRE were 83.6%, 39.6%, 85.9% and 74.5% in DPPH assay, 99.5%, 13.7%, 96.4% and 88.6% in ABTS assay. Tyrosinase inhibitiory activities HDFW were 56.0% at 1,000 ppm. Measured the inhibition effect of the H. dulcis about collagenase and elastase where break the peptide bonds in collagen and enzyme from the class of proteases where exists in the dermis. The H. dulcis was inhibition the two kind enzymesm, collagenase activities being on a high scale inhibition, was same concentration. Uses the anti oxidation effect and a anti-wrinkle effect of this resultant H. dulcis and with the functional cosmetics use is thought with the fact that will be possible.
Attempts were made to regenerate plants from petiole explane of Forest Pimpinella barchycarpa via repetitive somatic embryogenesis. Effective induction of somatic emb교ogenesis was achieved on both MS and modified $B_{5}\;(mB_{5})$ media containing BA + 2,4-D or BA + 2,4-D + NAA under light condition (16-h photoperiod/day) cultures. The explants exposed to the ligt produced numerous somatic embryos while those kept under the dark did not form any on the same medium. Somatic embryos at different developmental stages were observed to arise within a individual explants. Plantlets could be regenerated on $mB_{5}$ basal medium or $mB_{5}$ containing 0.1 mg/L NAA Secondary adventive embryos were formed on the surface of the somatic embryos. Therefore, repetitive somatic embryogenesis could be achieved by secondary embryogenesis. Although the treatment of 2,4-D or NAA alone was effective in callus formation and growth, but not in induction of somatic embryogenesis. Some explants, cultured on NAA-containing media in darkness, produced only adventive roots. The embryogenic potential was maintained for two years when subcultured to BA and 2,4-D containing media with 5 weeks inteval. Regenerated plantlets were maintained on $mB_{5}$ or MS basal media for 4 to 6 more weeks and transferred to soil of an artificial mixture for acclimation. Most plantlets (more than 97%) survived, and grew without any deformity.
Bacteriolytic myxobacteria have been known to secrete various antifungal metabolites against several soilborne phytopathogens including Phytophthora. Among the three isolates of Myxococcus spp., KYC 1126 and KYC 1136 perfectly inhibited the mycelial growth of Phytophtora capsici in vitro. In order to show the biocontrol activity on Phytophthora blight of hot pepper, we tried to find the best way of application of a myxobacterial isolate. Although KYC 1126 fruiting body was easily grown on the colony of Escherichia coli as a nutrient source, it did not control the disease when it was pre-applied in soil. Before the bioassay of a liquid culture filtrate of KYC 1126 was conducted, its antifungal activity was confirmed on the seedlings applying with the mixture of the pathogen's zoospore suspension and KYC 1126 filtrate. On greenhouse experiments with five and four replications, the control value of KYC 1126 on phyllosphere and rhizosphere was 88% and 36%, respectively. Whereas, the control value of dimetnomorph+propineb on phyllosphere was 100% and that of propamorcarb on rhizosphere was 44%. There was a phytotoxicity of the myxobacterial filtrate when seedlings were washed and soaked for 24 hours. Gummy materials were covered with roots. And stem and petiole were constricted, then a whole seedling was eventually blighted.

To examine the morphogenetic response, stem segments of 8 Populus spp. and 3 different explants of P. nigra var. italica were cultured on MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) and WPM (Woody Plant Medium) medium containing various phytohormones. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Shoot regeneration and development from stem segment of 8 Populus spp. showed a quite difference according to the section and the species. All of the species of Leuce and Tacamahaca section did not form adventitious buds, while most of explants showed axillary or dormant bud elongation after 4 weeks. But P. nigra var. italica of Aigeiros section showed a successful adventitious bud formation (mean 5.4 buds per explant). 2. Leaf, petiole, and internode segment of P. nigra var. italica showed a quite differences according to media and ex plants upon the morphogenetic response. Adventitious bud formation from leaf was more abundant and readily initiated on the abaxial side than on the adaxial side. Mean number of 103 adventitious buds per explant was obtained from abaxial side of leaf segment cultured on WPM medium containing $0.2mg/{\ell}$ BAP for 5 weeks. 3. 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid) supplemented to media appeared to be negative upon the adventitious bud formation of P. nigra var. italica, while it promoted callus formation from all explants. Especially, NAA (${\alpha}$-naphtalene acetic acid) or NAA combination with BAP (6-benzylaminopurine) promoted root regeneration from the all explant of P. nigra var. italica in this study.
This study has observed the development, structure and distribution of oil canals in mitsuba, seri, ashitaba and hamabohu, that are condiment herbs belonging to the Umbelliferae family, using a light microscope. Oil canals were found in the petioles, leaf blades, stems, roots, hypocotyls and cotyledons. Oil classified into distribution due to ring vascular bundles, as in mitsuba and seri, and distribution due to diffuse vascular bundles, as in ashitaba and hamabohu. Oil canal development in the cortex due to petiole thickening was followed by the development of collenchyma and vascular bundles. However, no vascular bundles were formed in some cases. Many oil canals were found in the periphery of the petioles. Oil canals in leaf blades were found on the adaxial and abaxial sides on the veins. Those around the main veins were larger. Steam oil canals were found in the cortex and pith in mitsuba and seri, and in the cortex and fundamental tissues around the xylem, in ashitaba and hamabohu, while those in the roots were found in the pericycle in mitsuba and seri, and in the collenchyma-like tissues and phloem in ashitaba and hamabohu. The transverse sections of oil canals were round or elliptical. The secretory cells in the cortex and pith were smaller than the neighboring parenchyma cells, while they were larger than the neighboring parenchyma cells in the phloem.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in tomato plants by Ralstonia solanacearum infection and the role of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and nitric oxide in tomato bacterial wilt control were demonstrated. During disease development of tomato bacterial wilt, accumulation of superoxide anion ($O_2{^-}$) and $H_2O_2$ was observed and lipid peroxidation also occurred in the tomato leaf tissues. High doses of $H_2O_2$ and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) nitric oxide donor showed phytotoxicity to detached tomato leaves 1 day after petiole feeding showing reduced fresh weight. Both $H_2O_2$ and SNP have in vitro antibacterial activities against R. solanacearum in a dose-dependent manner, as well as plant protection in detached tomato leaves against bacterial wilt by $10^6$ and $10^7$ cfu/ml of R. solanacearum. $H_2O_2$- and SNP-mediated protection was also evaluated in pots using soil-drench treatment with the bacterial inoculation, and relative 'area under the disease progressive curve (AUDPC)' was calculated to compare disease protection by $H_2O_2$ and/or SNP with untreated control. Neither $H_2O_2$ nor SNP protect the tomato seedlings from the bacterial wilt, but $H_2O_2$ + SNP mixture significantly decreased disease severity with reduced relative AUDPC. These results suggest that $H_2O_2$ and SNP could be used together to control bacterial wilt in tomato plants as bactericidal agents.
The explants of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia Poeppig & Endlicher) were cultured to invest th8e dedifferentiation condition, and formative callus from leaf was cultured to find the regeneration and micro-crown bud formation. Basal MS medium was more effective to form callus than 1/2 MS and B$_{5}$ medium. Calli formations from leaf, petiole and lateral bud were more effective on MS medium supplemented with 1.0, 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.2, 0.4 mg/L kinetin or BA than 1.0, 2.0 mg/L NAA and 0.2, 0.4 mg/L kinetin or BA. Formative callus from leaf was proliferated about 70% on medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L BA. When callus was proliferated, 63% regeneration rate was shown on medium supplemented with 1.0, 2.0 mg/L BA in case of subculture for 3~4 months but was not shown on medium supplemented with 1.0, 2.0 mg/L kinetin. Micro-crown bud formed as addition of BA at 3~4 months after callus culture and then was obtained many at 5~6 months, it was most formed about 82% on medium supplemented with 5 mg/L BA. Rate of micro-crown bud formation was increased as more over 5 mg/L BA concentration, when this time, however, shoot had thick leaves and short internodes, and then withered before long, Micro-crown bud was formed about 88.0% on medium supplemented with 5% sucrose, that was more increased 28% than with 3% sucrose. The buds of crown bud between harvested in field and formed in vitro were difference only in size, but both were similar in shape according to histological view.

This research was carried out to establish the large quantity propagation system for Kalopanax pictus using root cutting. The results are as follows. As there was no significant difference in the promotion of adventitious shoot development from the root cuttings of Kalopanax pictus among kinds (IBA, NAA and Kinetin) and concentrations (0 to 2000 mg/L) of growth regulators, no application is recommended, which showed more than 90% of shoot development. Horizontal and vertical placement of rooting showed more than 93% of shoot occurrence, but the latter showed more desirable growth traits in the number of shoot development, number of leaf, petiole length, and leaf length and leaf width Polarity was observed and thus normal vertical placement of root cutting is preferred. However, root cuttings placed upside down showed the shoot development at the distal end, which indicates further sophisticated test is necessary to investigate this phenomenon.
This study was carried out to determine leaf photosynthetic capacity and growth characteristics of Kalopanax picturs Nakai seedlings under the different light condition. The seedlings grown under low light condition showed larger leaf area and petiole, and higher relative growth rate than those grown under high light condition. Chlorophyll contents as chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and chlorophyll a + b were high in the seedlings grown under highlight condition compared to those grown in low light conditions. The mean absorption value of shade leaf within photosynthetically active radiation (400-700 nm) was slightly higher than that of sun leaf, Leaf photosynthetic capacity of seedling was variable under the different light conditions. Seedling grown under high light condition had the higher photosynthetic capacity. Leaf photosynthetic rates under forestry and nursery were 700 and $300\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively. However, leaf photosynthetic rates under high and low light conditions were 500 and $300\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively.

The objectives of this study, an analysis of the morphological characteristics among six provenances of a rare Rhododendron micranthum could be used for the conservation of gene resources and could provide information on superior trees selection. The following results were obtained. Approximately Mt.worak region showed larger values at petal character. On the other hand, Bonghwa region showed smaller values at petal character. Yeonha-ri region showed larger values at leaf character. On the other hand, Bonghwa region showed smaller values at leaf character. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) for morphological characteristics showed that the first for principal components(PC's) explained 41.6% of the total variation. From th third PC explained 81.5% of the total variation. The first PC was correlated with those characteristics that were mainly related to the Petal length (PL), Leaf length (LL) width (LW), Stigma length (SL). The second PC was correlated with the Petiole length (PTW), Anther length (AL). The third PC was correlated with the Flower pedicel length (FPL), Filament length (FL). Therefore, these characteristics was important to analysis of the variation for morphological characteristics among provenances of Rhododendron micranthum. Cluster analysis using single linkage method based on morphological characteristics showed that six provenances of Rhododendron micranthum could be clustered into three groups. Group I is Jicdong-ri, Group II is Mt.worak and Yeonha-ri, and Group III is Taeback, Bonghwa, and Samcheok. These results corresponded well with that of principal component analysis.
