This study aims to identify the characteristics of Korean secondary school students in perceptions on and needs to school libraries, and suggest an effective library management directions based on the characteristics. To achieve this purpose, we compare the perceptions on and needs for library elements, such as facilities, collections, programs, etc., between middle school students and high school students, and analyze the differences. Based on the results from the analysis, we suggest to establish an orientation of school library management. We also suggest a need of further study in which differences in the perception and needs among grades in a level of the secondary school for more detailed customization of library services.

In order for school library to fully serve as a key educational element of a school, teachers' positive perception on the library's role is essential. Due to the lack of the perception, however, school libraries are not closely related to class activities in practice. Since teachers' perception on school library has been regarded as an given environmental factor in the field of school libraries, alternatives for revitalizing school libraries proposed in previous studies were not effective in practice. We developed a hypothesis that activities in school libraries have a certain impact on the teachers' perception, and tested the hypothesis and identified library factors to the perception in this study. Through a series of statistical analyses with the data from a questionnaire survey with teachers in elementary schools, we identified that the teachers perceived the library as non-curricular element, their perceptions were affected by the library. Consequently, the school library can influence the teachers' perveption. This study has implications to explore practical alternatives to improve the teachers' perception on school libraries by activities in school libraries.

This study aims to investigate and analyze the current status of user education and the school library staffs' perceptions in elementary school libraries in Gyeongnam, and then to propose a plan to improve user education in school libraries. Among the 168 school libraries in the Gyeongsangnam-do where librarians are deployed, 120 that responded to the survey were selected as research subjects. The contents of the study include the contents and methods of user education, the status of librarian education for user education, school library staffs understanding and interest in user education, school library staffs' perceptions of the necessity and effectiveness of user education, and school library staffs' efforts to strengthen capacity of user education. Based on the current status of user education and the results of the school library staffs' perceptions survey, the following are proposed as a way to improve user education of the school library: 1) expanding librarian education opportunities for user education, 2) development and distribution of educational materials that diversify the content and level of each grade, 3) organizing normal school hours for user education, 4) continuous efforts to strengthen capacity for user education.

The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for implementing library collaborative instruction (LCI) through investigating the effects of high school teachers' perceptions and experiences of school libraries on the recognition of LCI. To accomplish it, a questrionnaire survey of 198 teachers in 14 high schools in Seoul was conducted. As a result, teachers' perceptions of school libraries and school library experience had significant effects on the their willingness to implement LCI, which consisted of educational effect(EE), necessity and implementation plan(IP). In short, teachers' perception of school libraries influenced most variables in EE and did not influence necessity. All independent variables had significant effects on IP. This can be interpreted as that teachers recognize the need of LCI, but the perception of EE is influenced by conveying tool for the knowledge of LCI, such as education, promotion, and experience.

In order to investigate school libraries' educational impact, two different surveys were conducted. One examined students' school library use in general, including the frequency, purpose, and effect of their library use, and the relative importance of the library in their campus life. The other examined and analyzed their perception of the benefit of the school library to determine if any differences exist among the following three levels: 1) libraries staffed with a dedicated teacher librarian, 2) libraries without a dedicated teacher librarian but active, and 3) libraries without a dedicated teacher librarian and inactive. The questionnaire to survey student's perception had 38 statements, The surveys on student's library use and their perceptions indicated that school libraries benefit the students' reading activities the most. The overall mean of the perception was 3.24(in 5 scales), There were distinct differences among the three levels of school library conditions: the mean for libraries with a teacher librarian scored highest at 3.37, libraries without a teacher librarian but active scored second highest at 3.20, and libraries without a teacher librarian and inactive scored lowest at 3.16. The levels of school library condition suggested direct links to the educational effect on students' achievements.

This study was conducted to raise awareness of careers in the Department of Library and Information Science (LIS) as well as to investigate current awareness and preferences for LIS Department as a strategy to cope with the rapidly changing university environment. To do this, a survey of high school students was carried out, with results as follows: First, awareness about the LIS Department and awareness about librarians in our country's high school students was very low. Second, for possible careers in LIS Department, students responded that a graduate of LIS department was likely to enter the workplace in public libraries, state libraries, university libraries, or school libraries, but they would like to work at broadcasting library, national libraries, school libraries, university libraries, public libraries, or portals. Third, awareness of the career path for the LIS Department showed a very large impact on a preference for the LIS Department. Therefore, students who have heard about the LIS Department are highly probable to select this department when they reach university.

This study aims to understand students' perceptions of the spatial characteristics of school libraries when they use them for reading. We selected a set of spatial characteristics by reviewing the literature and conducting a preliminary investigation. Then, we examined how students perceived the importance of and how satisfied they were with each characteristic. In addition, we investigated how students' perceptions differ by the library uses and reading-related activities. We also studied whether the satisfaction of school library users affects their continued use of the libraries. We also verified whether school library user satisfaction is an intervening variable in continued-use intention, which is affected by spatial characteristics perception. We conducted a survey of 342 students from four middle schools. The analysis of the survey outcomes shows differences in library use due to spatial characteristics such as convenience, communicability, diversity, and safety. Factors such as communicability, comfortability, and ambience affected user satisfaction positively. Both aesthetics and communicability also positively influenced the continued-use intention. Furthermore, we identified that communicability, comfortability, and ambience eventually impacted the continued-use intention via user satisfaction, an intervening variable. The significance of this study is that it considered the direction of the school library to support students' reading by regarding the school library as a space for reading.

The purpose of this research is to explore young adults (YA)' perceptions, use, and needs of public libraries, as well as to find out how to make effective YA sections within public libraries. Two public libraries with separate YA sections were selected and a total of 126 YA users participated in the survey. The survey showed 86.5% of participants used the YA section and the main reasons for use were reading for leisure, study area use, and seeking information for school assignments. 64.8% of participants agreed that separate YA sections are needed at public libraries. The areas most in need of improvement were expansion of seats of YA section, lack of digital devices, and expansion of group study and meeting spaces. This research highlights for space composition policy as YA's needs, creating a balanced environment for physical facilities, and YA oriented service. As well, a need for improved opening hours, and expansion of multi-use spaces for seats of the YA section.

The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary, middle and high school teachers' perceptions and experiences on school library services, to obtain basic information and to draw implications for setting the contents and direction of school library services. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on 498 teachers working at elementary, middle and high schools in the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education for reading status, recognition and emotion of the school libraries, school library experience, teaching experiences using school libraries, and the role of teacher-librarians. As a result of the analysis, there was a difference in teachers' perceptions, emotions, and experiences of school library services according to school level and school library personnel. In particular, the school library personnel was found to have a significant influence on teachers' perception, emotion and experience of school library service.

In this study, we aimed to examine the feasibility of establishing a shared preservation center with a focus on the Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education. We conducted surveys to assess the current situation and gather perceptions. The research findings revealed the following: Firstly, the surveyed school libraries were already experiencing extreme levels of book saturation, necessitating the management of book saturation and proper book quantity. Secondly, very few libraries had the facilities required for book preservation. Thirdly, the research showed that in 78% of school libraries, book saturation already exceeded 75%, leading to a rapid increase in discarded books each year. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the systematic expansion of a shared preservation center. Moreover, given the difficulty of individual libraries in establishing facilities for preservation, valuable materials such as rare books and specialized resources should be transferred to a shared preservation center. Additionally, policies and regulations related to material preservation are deemed necessary.
