Characteristics of a Megajournal: A Bibliometric Case Study

  • The term megajournal is used to describe publication platforms, like PLOS ONE, that claim to incorporate peer review processes and web technologies that allow fast review and publishing. These platforms also publish without the constraints of periodic issues and instead publish daily. We conducted a yearlong bibliometric profile of a sample of articles published in the first several months after the launch of PeerJ, a peer reviewed, open access publishing platform in the medical and biological sciences. The profile included a study of author characteristics, peer review characteristics, usage and social metrics, and a citation analysis. We found that about 43% of the articles are collaborated on by authors from different nations. Publication delay averaged 68 days, based on the median. Almost 74% of the articles were coauthored by males and females, but less than a third were first authored by females. Usage and social metrics tended to be high after publication but declined sharply over the course of a year. Citations increased as social metrics declined. Google Scholar and Scopus citation counts were highly correlated after the first year of data collection (Spearman rho = 0.86). An analysis of reference lists indicated that articles tended to include unique journal titles. The purpose of the study is not to generalize to other journals but to chart the origin of PeerJ in order to compare to future analyses of other megajournals, which may play increasingly substantial roles in science communication.

The Effect of Psychological Characteristics and Peer Acceptance on Korean Female Adolescents' Clothing Behavior (청소년기 여학생의 심리적 특성과 또래수용이 의복행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purposes of this study were 1) to identify the effects of psychological characteristics and peer acceptance on female adolescents'clothing behaviors(clothing attitudes and preference for up-to-date style), and 2) to determine the differences in psychological characteristics and clothing behaviors among subject groups classified by sociometric status. The questionnaires dealing with public/private self-consciousness, adolescent egocentrism, self-efficacy and clothing behaviors were adapted from precious studies. Peer acceptance was measured using Coie and Dodge(1983) method. The data were collected from 485 middle and high school girls living in Seoul, Korea. From the results of multiple regression of psychological characteristics and peer acceptance on clothing behaviors, clothing sexual attractiveness, clothing exhibition, and clothing importance were found to be influenced by public self-consciousness, adolescent egocentrism and peer acceptance. Fashion leadership and psychological dependence were influenced by egocentrism and self-efficacy. Preference for up-to-date style was influenced by egocentrism, public self-consciousness and self-efficacy. One-way ANOVA was used for analyzing the differences in research variables among subject groups classified by sociometric status. From the reset of middle school girls it was revealed that ignored group showed the highest score in clothing importance, whereas both popular group and rejected group showed the lowest score in social self-efficacy. In high school girls, controversial group showed the highest scores in adolescent egocentrism, fashion leadership, and preference for up-to-date style.

Relationships between Victimization by Peers, Bullying, and Friendships, with a focus on Friendship Network, Friendship Quality, and Friends' Characteristics (또래 괴롭힘의 피해 및 가해와 친구 관계의 관련성 : 친구관계망, 친구관계 질 및 친구의 특성을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between peer victimization by peers, bullying, and friendships, with a focus on friendship network, friendship quality, and friends' characteristics. The subjects were 678 fifth and sixth grade primary school children recruited from a public school in Bucheon city. The peer nomination index was used to assess peer victimization, bullying, and friendship network. In addition, children themselves reported on the quality of their friendships using the Friendship Quality Scale. The results showed that victimization by peers was influenced by friendship network size, support, and victimization of friends, whereas bullying was explained by support and the bullying behaviors of friends.

An Effect of Peer Counselor's Mentor Activity on Rejected Children's Peer Relationship in Elementary School (또래상담자의 멘토활동이 초등학교 배척아동의 또래관계에 미치는 효과)

  • This study aimed at examining an effect of peer counselor's mentor activity on rejected children's peer relationship in elementary school. To achieve this goal, the following hypothesis was made. Hypothesis I : Peer counselor's mentor activity will improve rejected children's peer relationship. I -1 : Peer counselor's mentor activity will improve rejected children's trust to peer. I -2 : Peer counselor's mentor activity will improve rejected children's respect to peer. To test the hypothesis, after sociometry papers 19 fifth-graders for rejected children groups were selected from four classes at H elementary school in Busan according to Coie & Dodge's(1988) five classified system that is modified to Korean situation by Ahn ie-hwan(2006). Ten rejected students from two classes were labeled as a peer group with a peer counselor and nine rejected students who had similar characteristics from two classes were labeled as an non-peer group without a peer counselor. The peer counselors were decided by obtaining affirmative mentions of rejected students group. Peer counselors participated in the training of peer counselor's skill program and then they had a person to person mentor activity with the rejected children's group that they belonging to. The training consisting of a total of four sessions, 3 times a week, was provided to peer counselors eleven times after school. The peer counselors given the peer counselling training did person to person mentor activity with the peer group's rejected children for a month. The mentor activity, three times a week, following during training was reinforced after school. For peer counselor training, the elementary school children's peer counseling program developed by Lee Sang-hi, Roh Seong-deok and Lee Ji-eun(2001) was used. Hong Ok-soon's(1984) peer relationship test, Moreno's(1934) sociometry tool were used to verify an effect of the peer counselor's mentor activity. For the data analysis, quantitative analysis with sociometry tool and qualitative analysis with social status and social type change were used. To know the difference in pre test and post test peer relationship between experimental group and control group, in quantitative analysis, ANCOVA result was used and qualitative analysis, social status and social type was used. The finding was as followings. First, after peer counselor's mentor activity, there was a significant improvement in rejected children's trust and respect to peer and the whole relationship from the pretest to the post test. Second, peer counselor's mentor activity gave rise to affirmative changes on rejected children's social status and social type. This study concluded that peer counselor's mentor activity would help rejected children's peer relationship to change affirmatively and improve.

Effects of Children's Emotionality, Emotion Regulation, and Maternal Parenting Behaviors on Children's Peer Competence (아동의 정서성, 정서조절 능력 및 어머니 양육행동이 아동의 또래 유능성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined effects of children's emotionality and emotion regulation, and maternal parenting behaviors on children's peer competence. Subjects were 222 4- and 5-year-olds children and their mothers. Classroom teachers rated each child's peer competence and emotion regulation; mothers responded to questionnaires on their child's emotionality and on their own parenting behavior. Results of this study were : (1) children's positive and negative emotionality and emotion regulation influenced children's peer competence. (2) Mother's warm and encouraging behaviors were also associated with children's peer competence. (3) Children's emotion regulation rather than negative emotion and mother's warm and encouraging behaviors predicted peer competence. Child characteristics were stronger predictors than parenting behaviors.

Analysis of Cross-Informant Data for Peer Group Rejection among Preschoolers (유아, 또래 및 교사 보고에 의한 유아기 또래 집단 거부의 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between self-report, peer nomination, and teacherreport of peer group rejection among preschool children. Moreover, we examined the influence of self-concept, language skills, social behaviors, and hyperactivity on peer group rejection. The participants were 297 4 and 5 year children recruited from preschools and day care centers. Teacher completed children’s social behaviors and children were interviewed to assess their self-concept and language skills. The results indicated that teacher-report was significantly correlated with self-report and peer nomination. According to informants, the associations between peer rejection and children's characteristics were different.

The Impact of Neighborhood Settings on Peer Risks among Delinquent Adolescents

  • The main purpose of this study was to identify the impact of neighborhood settings on peer risks experienced by delinquent adolescents. A convenience sample of 1,086 youth who came to the attention of four county juvenile courts was used for the present study. The peer risk levels were measured through use of version 1.0 of the Global Risk Assessment Device (GRAD); in addition, neighborhood information obtained from the National Census was utilized. The results of the HLM demonstrated that there were significant between-neighborhood variations in peer risks and the neighborhood economic disadvantage variable was associated with peer risks after controlling for the variables of individual characteristics. The findings of this study add to the literature on juvenile delinquency by providing empirical support for the proposed model that illustrates the significant relationship between a neighborhood setting indicator and peer risks experienced by delinquent adolescents when practicing treatment or intervention programs with delinquent adolescents.

  • This paper presents a P2P (Peer-to-Peer) overlay multicast tree construction algorithm to support stable multimedia service over the Internet. While constructing a multicast tree, it takes into account not only the link delay, but also peer stability. Since peers actually show dynamic and unstable behavior over P2P-based network, it is essential to consider peer stability. Furthermore, the weighting factor between link delay and peer stability is adaptively controlled according to the characteristics of the multicast tree. Basically, Genetic algorithm is employed to obtain a near optimal solution with low computational complexity. Finally, simulation results are provided to show the performance of the proposed algorithm.

The shyness in sixth-graders : Its relationship to interpersonal adjustment and peer acceptance (6학년 아동의 수줍음 : 대인적응석 및 또래수용성과의 관계)

  • The study was designed to examine the relationship between shyness and social behaviors such as interpersonal adjustment and peer acceptance. The subjects were 435 sixth-graders(221 boys and 214 girls) and their mothers and teachers. They completed questionnaires to rate the behavioral characteristics of the children. The main results showed that 1) shyness, interpersonal adjustment, and peer acceptance varied little as a function of sex and birth order of children, and 2) shyness was related negatively both to interpersonal adjustment and to peer acceptance.

  • Researchers in marketing, sociology, and economics have been interested in the role of social interactions in consumer choice and consumption behaviors. Social interactions, labeled variously as peer effects, social contagion, and neighborhood effects, have important implications for firms' allocation of marketing efforts. In this research, we test and provide empirical evidence for peer effects in consumers' service usage in the context of gym-going behaviors. Using a detailed individual-level membership and attendance data at one of the largest health club chains in the U.S., we document that a focal member's gym-going behavior is influenced by the behaviors and characteristics of the peers at the same branch
