  • PMS(Pavement Management System) is the effective and efficient decision making system to provide pavements in an acceptable condition at the lowest life-cycle cost. As the highway system become larger, the necessity of the PMS in increasing. As of December 1995, the 3rd stage of PMS project was completed. Practical Approach for Pavement Treatment Decisions for Local Agencies

  • Most local agencies such as counties and small cities continuously express difficulties in making technically and financially defensible decisions on their pavement infrastructure maintenance and rehabilitation. Unlike pavement systems managed by state highway agencies, the total lane-miles of many local pavements are significantly short and they are managed by a limited number of staff who typically have multiple responsibilities. Most local agencies also do not have historical pavement performance data and the lack of a systematic decision making framework exacerbates the problem. A structured framework and an easily accessible decision support tool that reflects their local requirements, practices and operational conditions would greatly assist them in making consistent and defensible decisions. This study fills this gap by developing a systematic pavement treatment selection framework and a spreadsheet based tool for local agencies. It is expected that the proposed framework will significantly help local agencies to improve their pavement asset management practices at the project level.

노후화된 시멘트 콘크리트 포장에 대한 콘크리트 및 아스팔트 덧씌우기의 포장성능 비교 (Comparison of the Pavement Performance for Concrete Overlay and Asphalt Overlay on Aged Cement Concrete Pavement)

  • 국내 고속도로의 60% 이상이 시멘트 콘크리트 포장으로 건설되었으며, 그 중 공용년수가 20년이 넘어선 구간이 절반 이상에 달하고 있다. 노후화된 시멘트 콘크리트 포장의 보수 보강은 국내의 교통여건상 우회도로가 준비되기 어렵기 때문에 조기 교통개방이 요구되며 현재까지는 주로 아스팔트 덧씌우기가 사용되고 있다. 반면에 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장은 조기 파손으로 인해 많은 유지보수비용이 지출됨과 동시에 도로사용자의 불편을 초래하고 있다. 최근 들어 노후화 된 시멘트 콘크리트 포장의 효율적인 보강공법으로 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 공법에 대해서 적용을 시도하고 있다. 따라서 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장과 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 포장의 합리적인 선택에 대한 비교 분석을 위해 포장의 연도별 파손상태에 대한 다양한 data가 필요하다. 하지만, 국내에서는 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장과 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 포장의 공용 중 파손상태에 대한 자료가 체계적으로 구축되어있지 않다. 본 연구에서는 아스팔트 덧씌우기와 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 공법이 적용된 구간의 파손에 대해 충분한 자료를 구축하고 있는 미국의 LTPP Data를 이용하여, 공용성에 대해서 평가하였다. 단, 아스팔트 덧씌우기와 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 공법은 파손형태가 서로 상이함으로써, 상대적인 비교를 위해 각각의 구간에 대해 포장상태지수(PCI, Pavement Condition Index)를 Database화 하였으며, 아스팔트 덧씌우기 구간과 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 구간의 수명에 대해서 비교 분석을 수행하였다.

VES-LMC 덧씌우기를 이용한 콘크리트 포장 보수 (Rehabilitation of Concrete Pavement with VES-LMC overlay)

  • Since in 1970, the length of concrete pavements(JCP, JRCP and CRCP) are growing rapidly at both of main highways and local roads. Many of them are deteriorated and old enough to be repaired or replaced. The pavement is more important than the other infrastructures and it is very difficult to go around or block the traffic during the rehabilitation. The very-early strength latex-modified concrete(VES-LMC)may offer the advantages of high-early-strength, higher flexural strength, higher bond strength, and improved durability. The VES-LMC could be used at a kind of fast track ofr early opening to the traffic after 3 hours of concrete placement. The installation of VES-LMC overlay at Jung-Boo highway was successfully done from April 28 to 29, 2005. The traffic was closed at 07:00 PM and opened to traffic at 08:30 AM. The compressive and flexural strength of VES-MC were more than 28MPa, 6.2MPa after 4 hours, respectively.

콘크리트포장의 박층 콘크리트 덧씌우기공법 (Thin Bonded Concrete Overlay for Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation)

  • This research focused on the development of concrete overlay and test, which was conducted at 88 Highway 105k, 2 lanes of 290 m. The field application test consists of 6 cm and 10 cm bonded concrete overlay and 25 cm unbonded concrete overlay, using the slag cement for opening lanes for traffic early. The overlay were placed in a day. The whole period of traffic closing wes 8 day and it was reopened to traffic after concrete overlay has cured for 3 day. 5 cracks were founded when the field test section was investigated after 1 month, but all these may not make significant problems to overlay because these initiated and growed at the same line of repair section. The rideability and skid resistance become much better like in the new pavement after overlay. The structural capacity against deflection was much. which were verified by FWD(Falling Weight Deflectometer). The field test section is being used in a good condition and the results of field application and pavement performance analysis are encouraging. This rehabilitation methods may be adopted in Korea after a more field performance verifications.

미국 LTPP Data를 활용한 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 포장 수명에 영향을 미치는 인자에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Factors Affecting on the Life of Bonded Concrete Overlay Pavement using the LTPP Data of U.S.A)

  • In this study, developed economical and scientific Pavement Management System(PMS) that can produce suitable maintenance method through judgement and analysis of pavement condition exactly, to overcome past unscientific pavement management limitations. First, on the basis of data of the inside and outside of the country on PMS, composed logical algorithm such as pavement condition investigation and analysis, detailed naked eye investigation, whole system estimation etc., and it verified that this algorithm is suitable system through the inside and outside of the country PMS research examples and results of detailed naked eye investigation. Also, developed easily usable PMS program and PMS_GIS program with such logical algorithm.

  • In this study, Pavement Management System(PMS) was developed to overcome the unscientific pavement management limitations of the past. PMS program is economic, efficient and scientific. Also, it produces the best maintenance method through exact judgement and logical analysis of pavement condition. First of all, the logical algorithm, that is such as investigation and analysis of pavement, detailed naked eye investigation and the estimation for whole system etc., was composed on the basis of the domestic and the outside data on PMS and pavement condition data of Seoul metropolitan. And then it was verified that this algorithm is suitable through the research examples of PMS data and the results of detailed naked eye investigation. Also, Geographic Information System(GIS) was integrated on PMS program. Therefore, PMS program was developed so as to use easily on the basis of the logical algorithm.

Effect of temperature on service life of flexible pavement using finite element analysis

  • Temperature is one of the most critical elements that influence the rutting and fatigue resistance of flexible pavements. Particularly in extreme hot regions in Saudi Arabia, high temperature would significantly reduce the rutting resistance of flexible pavements leading to reduction of pavement service life. Due to the impacts of global warming, average temperature in Saudi Arabia is expected to further increase by about 4℃ by the end of the 21st century. The substantial increase in average temperature will elevate the expected pavement maintenance and rehabilitation cost. This paper analyzes the structural effects of temperature on pavement using layered elastic analysis based on finite element techniques. The research team calculated the potential loss of pavement service life due to the projected temperature increase and climate change. The paper also analyzed potential impact of using carbon waste in asphalt concrete to tackle the derogatory impacts of temperature rise.

NHPCI 지표를 활용한 공용성 추정과 수명 산정 (Estimation of Performance and Pavement Life using National Highway Pavement Condition Index)

  • PURPOSES: The new methodology is proposed for estimation of long-term performance and pavement life based on the national highway database in Daejeon area. Furthermore, this study tried to verify the applicability of performance estimation using NHPCI (National Highway Pavement Condition Index) on tendency of pavement deterioration as time goes by under Korean road environments. METHODS: Reliability theories are applied to estimate the mean life and to determine the appropriate distribution using 3 levels of traffic loads (high, medium, low) based on maintenance and rehabilitation history data for 15 years. RESULTS: As a result, Lognormal distribution is suitable for explanation of pavement lifetime in Daejeon area regardless of traffic loads. In addition, we found that the results of mean life and maintenance timing based on NHPCI for the pavement sections of 3 levels of traffic loads are available. CONCLUSIONS: Based on this study, it was found that mean life of high, medium and low levels of traffic loads are about 8.1 years, 12.2 years and 12.7 years, respectively. Higher level of traffic loads shorten the pavement mean life.
