A natural deodorizing agent (NDA) was made using pine cone byproduct, and its effects on malodor emission and composting were analyzed in this study. NDA was manufactured by mixing pine cone byproduct with three species of microorganisms and water containing mineral nutrients and molasses, and then by incubating for 48 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. Lab scale experiments were done with three treatment groups, T1 (control, sawdust treatment), T2 (microorganisms and sawdust treatment group), and T3 (NDA and sawdust treatment group). During composting, temperatures reached over $55^{\circ}C$, a minimum temperature for the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms. No differences were found in physicochemical composition of compost among treatments. However, it was observed that over usage of NDA could obstruct temperature increase, since the biodegradation rate of organic matter of NDA was relatively low, Nitrogen loss due to ammonia gas emission, which normally happens during composting, was reduced by using NDA, and hence the nitrogen level of final compost was higher in T3 than in others. During experiment, it was found that ammonia gas emission was entirely lasted through compositing duration, but the $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ gases were produced only at early stage of composting. The ammonia concentration trapped in $H_2SO_4$ solution during 31 days of composting in T1, T2 and T3 was 12,660mg/L, 11,598mg/L and 7,367mg/L, respectively, showing distinguishable reduction of ammonia gas emission in T3. The emissions of $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ gases were also remarkably reduced in T3. Based on these obtained results, usage of the deodorizing agent made with pine cone byproduct could reduce the emission of malodor during composting, without any deterioration of compost quality.
Shelf-stability of powdered model food was determined during storage at various temperatures ($25^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$) and various moisture contents (3.5%, 6.0%, 8.0%). Moisture content, peroxide value, pH, color, microbial counting and sensory evaluation were conducted during storage. Moisture content, peroxide value, pH and color were not significantly changed during storage in all samples indicating that this powdered model food was relatively stable at given conditions. Pathogenic microorganisms, such as Bacillus cereus, Listeria spp., Clostridium perfrigens, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus, were not found during storage suggesting that there was no problem in safety in this case. On the other hand, the number of artificially added Lactic acid bacteria was decreased with increasing both storage temperature and moisture content. Therefore, powdered model food was very shelf-stable and it was impossible to predict the shelf-life using above quality factors.
An antagonistic strain, Burkholderia MP-1, showed antimicrobial activity against various filamentous plant pathogenic fungi, yeasts and food borne bacteria (Gram-positive and Gram-negative). The nucleotide sequence of the 16S rRNA gene (1491 pb) of strain MP-1 exhibited close similarity (99-100%) with other Burkholderia 16S rRNA genes. Isolation of the antibiotic substances from culture broth was fractionated by ethyl acetate (EtOAc) solvent and EtOAc-soluble acidic fraction. The antibiotic substances were purified through a silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, ODS column chromatography, and high performance liquid chromatography, respectively. Four active substances were identified as phenylacetic acid, hydrocinnamic acid, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid and 4-hydroxyphenylacetate methyl ester by gas chromatographic-mass spectrum analysis. The minimum inhibition of concentration (MIC) of each active compound inhibited the growth of the microorganisms tested at 250 to $2500{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$. The antimicrobial activity of crude acidic fraction at 1 mg of dry weight per 6 mm paper disc was more effective than authentic standard mixture (four active substances were mixed with the same ratio as acidic fraction) over a wide range of bacterial test.
The study has been carried to investigate a possibility to control several major insect pest of forest by microbial pathogens existing in nature as one of the biological control measure. Microorganisms including polyhedral virus isolated from diseased fall webworm were total of 4 kinds pathogenic microbes among these 4 kinds were polyhedral virus and Bacillus .species. Control effect of these two pathogens appeared to be $70.6\%$ and $49.5\%$, respectively, when they were compared with those of control plot that was $27.8\%$. Each one of bacterium species and fungus species were isolated from diseased Japanese alder leaf beetle. Pathogenisity to the healthy beetle was recognized by the fungus species, while the bacterium showed none of pathogenisity. The fungus was identified as Beauveria sp. and its effect on the beetle control was $96.2\%$ while untreated plot showed $49.2\%$ of dead beetles in the same period. Fifteen species of microbes were isolated from diseased larvae of pine gall midge. Six species out of 15 showed certain level of insecticidal effect to the larvae of the insects. The highest efficiency was showed by a fungus species, Fusarium sp. and was followed by Bacillus SP. I, Spicaria sp. pathogens isolated from larvae of pine gall midge did not affected to both of Japanese alder leaf beetles and fall webworms in any means.
The purpose of this study was to determine the thermal inactivation of L. monocytogenes KCTC3443 in liquid culture heated in the controlled microwave system and in the conventional heating method. Furthermore, we have carried out a comparative study on the thermal and nonthermal microwave effects on microorganisms, pasteurized using a controlled microwave energy specially designed apparatuses and a water bath. For the automatic temperature control during microwave heating, the real time data acquisition and computation system is designed with BASIC routine. The automatic temperature control system used in the experiments perform relatively stable control at the experiment temperature of 55, 65, $75^{\circ}C$ and $85^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The effects of microwave heating on liquid cultures was compared with that of conventional heating. The results show that microwave radiation, while being slightly quicker than conventional heating, still reduces effectively the number of pathogenic bacteria during heating for a limit time in liquid cultures. While no particular differences between microwave heating and conventional heating was not observed in the thermal inactivation of L. monocytogenes at 55, 65, $75^{\circ}C$ and $85^{\circ}C$ for 30 min., respectively. Microwave heating is, therefore, substantially not effective in inactivating L. monocytogenes in liquid culture than conventional heating method.

Membrane filtration has become more popular in drinking water treatment recently, since the filtration can control not only particulate matters but also pathogenic microorganisms such as giardia and cryptosporidium very effectively. Pilot-scale ($120m^3/d$ of treatment capacity) and test-bed ($25,000m^3/d$ of treatment capacity) microfiltration experiments were conducted to find optimum operating mode and the critical flux. Optimum operating mode of pilot-test was assessed as inflow 1.0 min, filtration 36.5 min, air backwash 0.9 min, backwash 1.0 min and outflow 1.0 min with 50 LMH ($L/min{\cdot}m3^$) of critical flux. Critical Flux was calculated to be $50L/m^2-h$ (within TMP 0.5 bar) based on the increase formula of the transmembrane pressure difference according to the change of time at Flux 20, 40, 56 and 62 LMH in pilot operation. Chemical cleaning was first acid washed twice, and alkali washing was performed secondarily, and a recovery rate of 95% was obtained in the test-bed plant. The results of operating under these appropriate conditions are as follows. Turbidity of treated water were 0.028, 0.024, 0.026 and 0.028 NTU in spring, summer, autumn and winter time, respectively. Microfiltration has superior treatment capability and performance characteristics in removing suspended solids and colloidal materials, which are the main cause of turbidity and important carrier of metal elements, and it has shown great potential in being an economically substitute to traditional processes (sand filtration).
To access the natural product antibiotics produced by uncultured microorganisms, six cosmid libraries of DNA extracted directly from soil samples (environmental DNA, eDNA) were constructed and screened for the production of antibacterial active molecules. Of the approximately 60,000 clones screened, one antibacterial clone (YS92B) was detected. Ethyl acetate extracts of clone YS92B showed antibacterial activity against various pathogenic bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas syringae, Xanthomonas campestris pv. oryzae, Staphylococcus epidemis). Active constituents from cultures of YS92B were isolated and purified using a bioassay-guided fractionation against B. subtilis through a series of procedures (ethyl acetate extraction, Sephadex LH20 column chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography). NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectral analysis of a major antibacterial active YS92B-VII indicated that it is a lauric acid linked to tyrosine. This report describes the characterization of antibacterially active long chain N-acyl derivatives of tyrosine that are produced by eDNA clones hosted in Escherichia coli from Korean soils.

Background: Bronchiectasis (BE) remains a rare respiratory disease in Korea. This retrospective study was done to investigate the potential pathogenic microorganisms (PPMs) that cause in patients with BE, through the use of sputum specimens. Methods: One hundred eleven adult patients, who had undergone chest computed tomography (CT), sputum gram stain/culture, and BE detected by chest CT, were included in this study. Sputum adequacy was determined by using Murray-Washington classification. Results: The mean (${\pm}$SD) age of patients was 60.9 (${\pm}$14.0). The number of PPMs was 167 (67%) in the total 248 isolated organisms. The most frequent PPMs were P. aeruginosa (23.4%), K. pneumoniae (10.5%), and S. aureus (8.4%). The proportion of adequate sputum (AS) was 25.8% in the total sputum specimens. The patients with AS were 41 (37%) and the patients with inadequate sputum (IS) were 70 (63%). The proportion of P. aeruginosa was higher in AS compared to that of IS (44% vs. 19%, p=0.004). The BE score was also higher in P. aeruginosa (+) patients compared to that of P. aeruginosa (-) patients (10.8 vs. 7.6, p=0.001). Conclusion: Although the proportion of AS in the total sputum was low, PPMs were isolated in most patients with BE. It is likely that P. aeruginosa was isolated in AS and AS patients had higher BE scores.

For the production of an antifungal compound, one strain (I-8) was selected from approximately 400 strains isolated from various soil samples. The optimum carbon source, nitrogen source and pH culture conditions for the production of the antifungal compound were investigated. ISP No. 2 medium (yeast extract 0.4%, malt extract 1% and dextrose 0.4%, at pH 8) was determined to be the optimum medium. Strain I-8 showed broad antifungal activity against the plant pathogenic fungi tested, including Sclerotinia sclerotiorum KACC 41065, as well as cellulase and chitinase activities in an agar plate assay. The extraction of antifungal compounds was performed using ethyl ether and ethyl acetate. In a culture broth of strain I-8, the ethyl acetate extract exhibited effective growth inhibition against 14 of the 20 phytopathogenic fungi tested. By mixing the ethyl acetate extract from I-8 with the ethyl ether extract from the fungus 13-16, which shows specific antifungal activity against Colletotrichum orbiculare KACC 40808, the antifungal activity of I-8 against phytopathogenic fungi was confirmed to be slightly increased. Strain I-8 showed strong growth inhibition against 16 phytopathogenic strains in agar plate tests.

This study was designed to evaluate the sanitary characteristics of sea water in a part of the south coast, Korea and to check the seawater which is in compliance with the recommended bacteriological criteria for shellfish cultivation. The samples of sea water were collected at 14 sampling stations established in the survey area between March 2014 and October 2014. Food poisoning caused by seafood consumption is often associated with pathogenic microorganisms originated from fecal contamination. Therefore, fecal coliform is very important criteria for evaluating the safety of fisheries in coastal areas. The range of geometric mean (GM) and the estimated 90th percentile values of total coliform were 4.1~83.1 MPN/100 mL, and 11.7~834.1 MPN/100 mL, respectively. The GM and the estimated 90th percentile values of fecal coliform were 2.5~22.7 MPN/100 mL and 2.5~170.0 MPN/100 mL, respectively. Therefore, the bacteriological safety of seawater at this shellfish-growing area met with the Korean Shellfish Sanitation Program (KSSP) criteria for a growing area. However, the values are seasonally exceed the KSSP criteria, suggesting that the monitoring and evaluation of seawater quality is very important in shellfish-growing area.
