Relationships between parents' home literacy attitudes in low-income families and children's emergent literacy were studied with 107 children 4- and 5-years of age and their parents. Instruments were Kim and Kwon's (2006) questionnaire about parents' literacy attitudes, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised(Kim et al., 1995) and the Concepts About Print(CAP; Kim & Kim, 2004). Results showed that parents of younger children were positive about reading books; parents of older children were positive about reading instruction. More positive parental feelings about reading and higher frequencies of reading with the child were related to children's higher vocabulary scores. Children's CAP was positively related with amount of parents' reading instruction, home literacy resources, and number of child's books in the home.
This study tries to analyse the relationship between sexual attitudes and behaviors on the one hand and parent-child relationships on the other among college students in Korea. 1,237 students from different areas were surveyed. Sexual attitudes are subdivided into four aspects, namely, permissiveness, instrumentality, emotional exchange, and responsibility, and sexual behaviors into indirect and direct ones. Results are as follow. First, sexual attitudes and behaviors among the subjects are found being different, depending on such variables as sex, religion and dating experiences. Secondly, while being related with both indirect and direct sexual behaviors, the variable of co-residence with parents is significantly related with the aspect of permissiveness, but not with the other three aspects. Thirdly, the parent-child communication is significantly related with sexual attitudes. One who has an open pattern of communication with parents tends to have more desirable sexual attitudes and is better able to control sexual behaviors.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine effects of parents' rearing attitudes perceived by bullied children. The focus in this study was on mediating effects of ego-resilience. Methods: Data were collected from 202 bullied elementary school students in grade years 5 and 6. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and structural analysis with the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program and Amos 19.0. Results: First, significant positive relations between parents' rearing attitudes and ego-resilience, significant negative relations between ego-resilience and bullying, and between parents' rearing attitude and bullying were found. Second, the effects of ego-resilience as a mediator between perceived parents' rearing attitudes and bullying were significant statistically. Conclusion: The findings suggest that educational programs for parents are needed to improve parents' perception of the importance of their rearing attitudes toward bullying and nursing intervention programs for bullied children should be developed to increase their ego-resilience.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between internal locus of control in children and parents' child rearing attitudes which children perceive. For this purpose, 198 fifth grade boys and 163 fifth grade girls were randomly selected and their perception of their parents' child rearing attitudes and their locus of control were measured. Children's locus of control was measured by A Locus of Control Scale For Children of Nowicki & Strickland (1973) which was translated into Korean and item analysis of which was done. Ami Children's perception of their Darents' child rearing attitudes measured by Parent-Child Relationship Inventory which was constructed in Korean Testing Center. For the data analysis, t-test and two-way analysis of variance were applied and Pearson correlation coefficient was computed. The results of the present study were as follows; 1. The correlations between children's perception of their parents' child rearing attitudes and locus of control in children were significant partly. Especially, internal children reported their parents as showing less rejective attitude and less different child rearing attitude between father and mother. 2, Sons were more influenced by their parents' child Learing attitudes than daughters in the development of locus of control 3. Maternal child rearing attitude was more influential than paternal child rearing attitude in the development of locus of control.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the attitudes toward science and support for scientific activities of the scientific gifted students' parents and the general students' parents in elementary school. The objects of the study were 99 scientific gifted students and their parents and 433 general elementary school students and their parents. The instruments for the measurement of attitudes toward science included three scales: cognition :About value of science, affection toward science and science learning, and cognitive participation in scientific activities. The instrument to measure parents' support for scientific activities included two scales: indirect support and direct support. The results of the study showed that the attitudes toward science of scientific gifted elementary students' parents were more positive than the attitudes toward science of general elementary students' parents. Also the gifted elementary students' parents supported many more scientific activities for their children with various methods than the general elementary students' parents. Their preferring support methods for scientific activities included 16 items including the collection of information about science education, the record of TV science programs, purchase of scientific books, subscription of periodical publication about science, preparing material for scientific activities, and reading scientific book with children.
The purpose is to explore elementary students' attitudes towards money and the effects of parents' educational involvement on children's economic behaviors. The subjects are elementary students(N= 123) from first grade to sixth grade. The survey consists of question items of money ethics, attitudes towards money, consumer ethics, parents' attitudes toward economic education, and children's economic practices such as management of allowance, income, saving and savings account. The results are as follows: first, the elementary students show the double standard in attitudes to money, thinking of money as positively being important, at the same time, as being negative social value. Second, the parents play positive models in children's economic education. However, their efforts are not enough so that their children could have desirable economic habits. Therefore, economic education is first needed for the parents and then for children.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the several types of Korean parent's child rearing attitudes perceived by their children and the related variables. The study included the development of a "Children's Report of Korean Parent's Behavior Inventory"(CKPBI). Subjects were 1722 5th and 6th grade elementary school children from 5 urban cities in Korea. CKPBI and a Home Environment Questionnaire were used to gather data for the study. Stepwise multiple regression analysis, cross-tabulation analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and factor analysis were conducted for the purpose of the study. A CKPBI which consists of 46 items for father's and 48 items for mother's was found as both a valid and reliable instrument for measuring the child rearing attitudes of Korean parents. A factor analysis resulted in identifying two factors both for mothers and fathers; they were the "Warmth factor" and "Rejection-Authority factor". Eight types of child rearing attitudes were found for Korean parents. The SES of family significantly predicted Korean parent's child rearing attitudes. The SES of the family, and sex of the child determined variations in Korean parents' child rearing attitudes. Maternal religion had a significant correlation with both boys' and girls' perceptions of parental attitudes. The results of this study indicate high inconsistency within each parent and high consistency between both parents.
This study aimed to identify the relationship between MBTI personality types and parent-child relationships among the juvenile delinquents non-delinquent adolescents. From the analyses of empirical data, the following tendencies were found. First, delinquent juveniles are more likely to be classified to be such MBTI types as "Extroverted," "Sensing," "Thinking," and "Judging" than non-delinquent juveniles. Second, contrary to popular belief, the juvenile delinquent group was fecund to have more positive attitudes toward their relationship with their parents than the non-delinquent juvenile group. Third, for both the non-delinquent juveniles and the delinquent juveniles, "I" and "P" preferences were related with a positive perception of the relationship with their parents. Fourth, "EJ," as a psychological temperament type, was related with a Positive relationship with parents for both groups. Fifth, the psychological function types were not significantly related with the relationship with parents. Sixth, "EP" and "IP," as psychological attitudes types, were related significantly with a positive relationship with parents. Seventh, the juveniles classified as "ESTJ" had good relationships with parents, whereas "ISTP" types, on the other hand, tended to show the most negative attitudes toward their relationship with parents. The most interesting result of this study was the finding that the "P (perceiving)" types in the non-delinquent juveniles group as well as in the juvenile delinquents group tend to have negative attitudes toward their parents.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors associated with instrumental support (i.e., economic and practical support) from parents to their adult children. We examined both parents' attitudes toward instrumental support for adult children and parents' actual provision of instrumental support. From the data of the 2010 second National Survey of Korean Families, we selected 532 mothers and 524 fathers who were married and had at least one adult child aged over 25. Multiple regression analyses by the parents' gender showed that fathers were more likely to agree with instrumental support for adult children in general when they had unmarried children, had a lower household income level, had a lower evaluation of their socio-economic class, were satisfied with their own household economic situation, had positive attitudes toward caregiving for elderly parents, and were satisfied with their couple relationships. For mothers, they were more likely to agree with instrumental support for adult children in general when they had positive attitudes toward caregiving for elderly parents, were satisfied with their couple relationships, and perceived their child as someone to rely on in times of difficulties. Our analyses of the actual provision of support indicated that fathers tended to provide more support when they perceived that they were healthy, had unmarried children, were less satisfied with their household economic situation, had negative attitudes toward child-rearing, and reported a higher quality of parent-child relationship. For mothers, they were more likely to provide actual support when they were healthy, had unmarried children, had a higher level of household income, were financially preparing for later life, and less satisfied with their couple relationships. The findings of this study imply that it is imperative to distinguish the attitudes toward support from the actual provision of support and to also consider parents' gender in the literature on instrumental support for adult children.
The purpose of this research is to compare the attitudes of female students in Korea toward science with the child-rearing attitude of their parents they perceived and their sex-role identity. The participants in this study were 374 female middle- and high-school students, chosen randomly from Seoul and Gyenggi-do in South Korea. We used three different forms of questionnaires in this research: "Scale of Parents' Child-rearing Behaviors Perceived by Teenagers", "Korea Sex-role Survey", and "Attitude Toward Science Measurement." The significant results were acquired after we had analyzed the comparison of the attitude of female students toward science with their perception on their parents' child-rearing attitude, especially on their fathers. The fathers' "monitoring" and "over-expectation" factors affected the attitudes of female students toward science; on the other hand, any child-rearing attitudes of their mothers did not influence their attitudes toward science. We also analyzed the attitudes of female students about science based on their sex-role identities. In consequence, we found that meaningful differences existed in four types of gender-role identity: androgyny type, masculinity type, femininity type and undifferentiated type. In particular, the androgyny type was characterized by a higher score in attitude toward science compared with the undifferentiated type.
