The samples were selected from high school students and their mothers and 342 couples were used in final analysis. Barnes & Olson(1982)'s parent-adolescent communication scale(PACI) and McCubbin(1981)'s family stress scale(FILE) were used to measure mother-adolescent communication pattern and family stress. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, Chi-square, F-test Duncan-test, multiple regression, Pearson's r, and Chronbach's α. The result are summerized as follows: 1) Mothers highly perceived mother-adolescent open communication pattern but adolescents highly revealed mother-adolescent close communication pattern. The general trends of family stress showed that adolescents stress is higher than mothers. 2) Communication patterns showed significant differences in mother's age, adolescent's sex and communication variables in mother's education and conversation variables. Generally when mothers and adolescents communicated insufficiently and were not satisfied with communication patterns family stress was increased. 3) Family stress was significantly different in communication patterns. Form the regression analysis it was found that communication patterns are crucial to family stress. Especially open communication pattern between mothers and adolescents was the most important among the communication patterns for family stress was reduced.

Olson et al., and a behavior evaluation tool. The results of the study 1. The results as related to the hypothesis were as follows. Hypothesis 1 : “satisfaction within The couple's relationship of the parents of problem family group will be lower than the normal family group was supported significantly(t=3.07, p=.005). Hypothesis 2: “The parent-adolescent relationship of the problem family group will be more negative and problematic than the normal family group” was supported significantly(t=4.06, p=.000). Hypothesis 3: “The family function (cohesion adaptability) of the problem family group will be lower than the normal family group" was supported significantly(t=2.20, p=.022) 2. The results of related analysis were as follows 1) Analysis of a causal relation between the couple’s relationship, the parent-adolescent relationship, family function and adolescent behavior showed that the Above 3 variables influenced adolescent behavior.. In cases where couple’s relation-ship, the parent-adolescent’s relationship, the family function are the better, their adolescent’s behavior is better. 2) Discriminant analysis of the research tool showed The discriminant ability of couple’s relationship tool was 75.57%, the Parent-Adolescent communication tool, 67.05, the family adaptability cohesion tool.67. 61%. In summary, interpersonal relationships in the family subsystems are interactive and their relation influences the behaviors. of adolescents in the family. Therefore, family therapy would be a more effective method than individual therapy, to resolve negative problem for adolscents, and the research tool used in this study are very useful for family system diagnosis and nursing intervention.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the influence of academic institutional interest, open parent-adolescent communication, social (friend) support, and existential spiritual well-being on suicidal ideation of college students. Methods: The research design was descriptive survey research involving 285 college students in city G. Data was collected from May 18, 2011 to November 2, 2011 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: The findings reveal that suicidal ideation of college students was low, i.e., average score was $9.2{\pm}3.65$ (possible range 5~25). This study determined that suicidal ideation is negatively correlated with interest on the part of the academic institution, open parent-adolescent communication, social support from friends, and existential spiritual well-being. The extent of existential spiritual well-being was a significant predictor of suicidal ideation, controlling for general characteristics variables (gender, number of close friends, first supporter) and institutional interest, open parent-adolescent communication, and social support. Existential spiritual well-being accounted for 50% of the explanation of suicidal ideation of college students. Conclusion: Based on the outcomes of this study, designing an intervention program that emphasizes existential spiritual well-being in order to decrease suicidal ideation of tertiary education students is strongly recommended.

  • Adolescence can be a time of turmoil and of stress. Rebellion against authority and against convention is to be tolerated for the sake of growth. The adolescence of children is a difficult time for parents. It is difficult to tolerate his/her manners, language, shifting moods, and constant confrontations of an adolescent child. Because of his/her egocentric thought process, he/she will be truly surprised if parents feel hurt by his/her behaviors. The parents need to learn that all these irrational behaviors fit his/her developmental phase. Adolescents have to free themselves from childhood ties with parents, establish new identification with peers, and find their own identity. The parents can be role models, maintain communication channels, and show their love while adolescents go through temporary disorganization and madness necessary for reorganization which will lead to mature human beings.
