  • Brushless DC(BLDC) motor have been increasingly used in machine tools and robotics applications due to the reliability and the efficiency. In control of BLDC motor, it is important to construct the controller which is robust to parameter variations and external disturbances. Variable structure controller(VSC) has been known as a powerful tool in robust control of time varying systems. In practical systems, however, VSC has a high frequency chattering which deteriorates system performances. In this paper, a binary controller(BC) which takes the form of VSC and MRAC combined is presented to solve this problem. BC consists of the primary loop controller and the external loop controller to change the gain of primary loop controller smoothly. So it can generate the continuous control input and is insensitive to parameter variations in the given domain. To confirm the validity, various investigations of control characteristics for various design parameters in a position control system of BLDC motor are carried out. • The genus of the matter density eld, as traced by galaxies, contains information regarding the nature of dark energy and the fraction of dark matter in the Universe. In particular, this topological measure is a statistic that provides a clean measurement of the shape of the linear matter power spectrum. As the genus is a topological quantity, it is insensitive to galaxy bias and gravitational collapse. Furthermore, as it traces the linear matter power spectrum, it is a conserved quantity with redshift. Hence the genus amplitude is a standard population that can be used to test the distance-redshift relation. In this talk, I present measurements of the genus extracted from the SDSS DR7 LRGs in the local Universe, and also slices of the BOSS DR12 data at higher redshift. I show how these combined measurements can be used to place cosmological parameter constraints on m, wde.

  • Input shaping method is to convolute input shaper, which is sequence of impulses, with reference input command not to excite the natural frequency of system. To reduce residual vibration for the ch ange of frequency, the number of impulses should be increased. Until now, amplitudes and time interval of those has been searched from the derivative of residual vibration. However, if time interval of impulses is fixed as the half of vibration period of system, input shaper H(z) in z-domain becomes (I-pz-1)n/K in which increasing n is the mean that robustness for change of parameter is improved. Also, design of many types of input shapers in z-domain is very easy because sensitivity curve is displayed with $\mid$H(z)zn$\mid$$\times$100. In the z-domain, EI(Extra-Insensitive) input shaper could be designed without solving nonlinear simultaneous equations as design in continuous time domain. In addition to, the design possibility of input shaper for a damped system was shown.

  • In this paper, an intelligent sliding-mode position controller (ISMC) for achieving favorable decoupling control and high precision position tracking performance of permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) servo drives is proposed. The intelligent position controller consists of a sliding-mode position controller (SMC) in the position feed-back loop in addition to an on-line trained fuzzy-neural-network model-following controller (FNNMFC) in the feedforward loop. The intelligent position controller combines the merits of the SMC with robust characteristics and the FNNMFC with on-line learning ability for periodic command tracking of a PMSM servo drive. The theoretical analyses of the sliding-mode position controller are described with a second order switching surface (PID) which is insensitive to parameter uncertainties and external load disturbances. To realize high dynamic performance in disturbance rejection and tracking characteristics, an on-line trained FNNMFC is proposed. The connective weights and membership functions of the FNNMFC are trained on-line according to the model-following error between the outputs of the reference model and the PMSM servo drive system. The FNNMFC generates an adaptive control signal which is added to the SMC output to attain robust model-following characteristics under different operating conditions regardless of parameter uncertainties and load disturbances. A computer simulation is developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed intelligent sliding mode position controller. The results confirm that the proposed ISMC grants robust performance and precise response to the reference model regardless of load disturbances and PMSM parameter uncertainties.

  • Since the inception of off-line quality control, it has drawn a particular attention from research community and it has been implemented in a wide variety of industries mainly due to its extensive applicability to numerous real situations. Emphasizing design issues rather than control issues related to manufacturing processes, off-line quality control has been recognized as a cost-effective approach to quality improvement. It mainly consists of three design stages: system design, parameter design, and tolerance design which are implemented in a sequential manner. Utilizing experimental designs and optimization techniques, off-line quality control is aimed at achieving product performance insensitive to external noises by reducing process variability. In spite of its conceptual soundness and practical significance, however, off-line quality control has also been criticized to a great extent due to its heuristic nature of investigation. In addition, it has also been pointed out that the process optimization procedures are inefficient. To enhance the current practice of off-line quality control, this study proposes an integrated optimization model by utilizing a well-established statistical tool, so called response surface methodology (RSM), and a tolerance - cost relationship.

  • Elimination of rotor position sensors mechanically coupled with the rotor shaft is attractive to variable speed drives primarily due to increased system reliability and cost reduction. In this regard, search for a simple and robust position sensorless control has been intensified in past few years specifically for low-cost, high-volume applications such as home appliances. This paper describes a new parameter insensitive position sensorless control for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives satisfying such a need in this market segment. Two consecutive switch-on times of the controllable switch in hysteresis current control are compared to estimate the rotor position and speed. The proposed sensorless control algorithm is very simple to implement since it does not depend on extensive computation or any additional hardware. In addition, the proposed method is robust in that its dynamic performance is least affected by system parameter variations. The proposed approach is demonstrated on a single-controllable-switch-converter-driven SRM with two-phases that lends itself to a system with low cost and compact packaging which comes close to the intended applications. Analysis and simulation results followed by experimental verification are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed sensorless control method.

  • The simple Langmuir isotherm is frequently employed to describe the equilibrium behavior of protein adsorption on a wide variety of adsorbents. The two adjustable parameters of the Langmuir isotherm - the saturation capacity, or $q_m$, and the dissociation constant, $K_d$ - are usually estimated by fitting the isotherm equation to the equilibrium data acquired from batch equilibration experiments. In this study, we have evaluated the possibility of estimating $q_m$ and $K_d$ for the adsorption of bovine serum albumin to a cation exchanger using batch kinetic data. A rate model predicated on the kinetic form of the Langmuir isotherm, with three adjustable parameters ($q_m,\;K_d$, and a rate constant), was fitted to a single kinetic profile. The value of $q_m$ determined as the result of this approach was quantitatively consistent with the $q_m$ value derived from the traditional batch equilibrium data. However, the $K_d$ value could not be retrieved from the kinetic profile, as the model fit proved insensitive to this parameter. Sensitivity analysis provided significant insight into the identifiability of the three model parameters.

  • The existing experimental data related to the turbulent mixing factor in rod arrays is examined and a new definition of the turbulent mixing factor is introduced to take into account the turbulent mixing of fluids with various Prandtl numbers. The new definition of the mixing factor is based on the eddy diffusivity of energy. With this definition of the mixing factor, it was found that the geometrical parameter, ${\delta}_{ij}/D_h$ correlates the turbulent mixing data better than Sid, which has been used frequently in existing correlations. Based on the experimental data for a highly turbulent condition in square rod arrays, a correlation describing turbulent mixing dependent on the parameter ${\delta}_{ij}/D_h$ has been developed. The correlation is insensitive to the Re number and it takes into account the effect of the turbulent Prandtl number. The proposed correlation predicts a reasonable mixing even at a lower S/d ratio.
