  • In this study, novel approximate form of the square-root operator of three dimensional acoustic Parabolic Equation (3D PE) is proposed using a rational approximant for two variables. This form has two advantages in comparison with existing approximation studies of the square-root operator. One is the wide-angle capability. The proposed form has wider angle accuracy to the inclination angle of ${\pm}62^{\circ}$ from the range axis of 3D PE at the bearing angle of $45^{\circ}$, which is approximately three times the angle limit of the existing 3D PE algorithm. Another is that the denominator of our approximate form can be expressed into the product of one-dimensional operators for depth and cross-range. Such a splitting form is very preferable in the numerical analysis in that the 3D PE can be easily transformed into the tridiagonal matrix equation. To confirm the capability of the proposed approximate form, comparative study of other approximation methods is conducted based on the phase error analysis, and the proposed method shows best performance.

  • In order to calculate waves propagating into the shallow water region, a generalized parabolic approximate model is presented. The model is derived from the modified mild slope equation and includes all the existing parabolic models presented in the paper. Numerical results are presented in comparison to laboratory data of Berkhoff et al.(1982). The existing parabolic model shows almost same accuracy against the modified parabolic model and both results of models stand in closer agreement to the laboratory data. Therefore the existing parabolic model based on mild slope equation is a useful tool to compute shallow water waves which turns out to be more fast and stable in computational aspect.

  • Parabolic approximation wave models based on $Pad{\acute{e}}$ approximants are analyzed in order to calculate wave transformation. In this study a $Pad{\acute{e}}(2,2)$ parabolic approximation model is developed to increase the accuracy of computation in comparison with the existing models. Numerical studies on a constant sloping bed show that the new model proves to allow for much more successful treatment of large angles of incidence than is possible using the previously available models.

  • Parabolic approximation wave models based on $Pad{\acute{e}}$ approximants are presented of which the $Pad{\acute{e}}$(15, 15) is shown to be applicable to incidence angle $80^{\circ}$ in comparison with the exact solution of a constant sloping bed. After introducing a systematic way of the derivation to the parabolic wave equation, parabolic models are obtained in this study upto the 15th order and several numerical results are given to wave transformation in a constant sloping bed.

  • Most of parabolic approximation models employ a relatively limited open boundary condition in which there is no depth variation in the longshore direction outside of the computation domain so that Snell's law may be presumed to hold. Existing Kirby's condition belongs to this category and in the paper both modified Kirby's method and Dirichlet boundary condition are presented in detail and numerical results of three methods were shown. Judging from computation to wave propagations over a circular shoal in a constant depth, the method based on present Dirichlet boundary condition with fictitious numerical adjusting regions in both sides of the computation domain gives the least distorted amplitude ratio distribution.

  • Exact forward modeling of acoustic propagation is crucial in MFP such as inverse problems and various other acoustic applications. As acoustic propagation in shallow water environments become important, range dependent modeling has to be considered of which PE method is considered as one of the most accurate and relatively fast. In this paper higher order numerical rode employing the PE method is developed. To approximate the depth directional operator, Galerkin's method is used with partial collocation to lessen necessary calculations. Linearization of tile depth directional operator is achieved via expansion into a multiplication form of (equation omitted) approximation. To approximate the range directional equation, Crank-Nicolson's method is used. Final1y, numerical self stater is employed. Numerical tests are performed for various occan environment scenarios. The results of these tests are compared to exact solutions, OASES and RAM results.

  • This study presents a 4 node, 11 DOF/node plate element based on higher order shear deformation theory for lamina composite plates. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strain through the thickness of the plate. Differential field equations of composite plates are obtained from energy methods using virtual work principle. Differential field equations of composite plates are obtained from energy methods using virtual work principle. These equations were transformed into the operator form and then transformed into functions with geometric and dynamic boundary conditions with the help of the Gâteaux differential method, after determining that they provide the potential condition. Boundary conditions were determined by performing variational operations. By using the mixed finite element method, plate element named HOPLT44 was developed. After coding in FORTRAN computer program, finite element matrices were transformed into system matrices and various analyzes were performed. The current results are verified with those results obtained in the previous work and the new results are presented in tables and graphs.
