  • Tuberculomas of the lung are rare in children and one of the more common lesions presenting a solitary pulmonary nodule roetgenorgraphically. We are reporting of a 3-year-old child with a tuberculoma in left upper lobe. The patient was initially diagnosed as the benign mediastinal tumor but in the end as tuberculoma in left uper lobe. Wedge resection including the mass was done. The tumor had brown smooth external surfaces on sectioning including the mass was done. The tumor had brown smooth external surfaces on sectioning show pale gray and soft cut surface was shown. In light electromicroscopy chronic granulomas with multinucleated giant cells and central caseous necrosis were observed which are the characteristics of tuberculoma. The postopeative course was smooth and uneventful and patient has been well for 4 months postoperatively.

  • Cladophialophora is characterized by simple hyphomycetes with brown hyphae that give rise to branched chains of pale brown conidia and shows affinities with the Herpotrichiellaceae. A fungal strain belonging to the genus Cladophialophora was isolated from soil in Daegu, Korea. This strain produces numerous greenish to dark black lanose aerial mycelia with hair like structures. It is morphological similar to C. chaetospira, C. inabaensis, and C. multiseptata; however, the conidiophores and conidia sizes of the newly isolated strain (KNU16-032) are clearly different from them. The novelty of the strain was also confirmed based on phylogenetic analysis using the data sets of the internal transcribed spacer region of and the partial sequence of 28S ribosomal DNA region along with the cultural characteristics. Because morphological observations and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the strain is distinct from previously known Cladophialophora species, we propose this species as a new species Cladophialophora lanosa sp. nov., and provide the detailed descriptions in this study.

  • In September 2013 and 2014, a significant number of kenaf plants showing symptoms of leaf spots with approximately 50% incidence were found in experimental plots in Iksan and Namwon, Korea. Leaf spots were circular to irregular, more or less vein-limited, reaching to 10 mm in diameter. The spots were initially uniformly brown to reddish brown, turning pale brown with a purplish margin and showing grayish patches on the lesion due to heavy fructification. The causative agent of the leaf spot disease was identified as Cercospora malayensis. The pathogenicity test was conducted with similar results, which fulfilled Koch's postulates. This is the first report of C. malayensis infection of kenaf in Korea.

  • Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea occurred on Saintpaulia ionantha in flower shop of the Jeonju city in Korea. Typical symptoms with brown water-soaked and rotting lesions were appeared on the flowers, leaves and petiole of infected plants. Many conidia spores appeared on the lesions under humid conditions. Colonies were grayish brown and sclerotial formation on potato dextrose agar. Conidia were one celled, mostly ellipsoidal or ovoid in shape, and were colorless to pale brown in color. The conidia were $7{\sim}14{\times}5{\sim}9\;{\mu}m$ in size. Based on pathogenicity and morphological characteristics of the isolated fungus, the causal fungus was identified as B. cinerea Persoon: Fries. Gray mold of S. ionantha was proposed to the name of this disease.

  • Bipolaris stem rot of cactus severely occurred up to 77% at the field of Koyang and Kimcheon from 1996 to 1997. The symptom was initially light yellow, water soaked round lesion, subsequently turned light brown and dried to death. The causal fungus was identified as Bipolaris cactivora (Petrak) Alcorn. Conidia were obclavate to fusoid, rounded ends, light brown color, 1~4 septate, and conidial size was 23~42$\times$6~9 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ (av. 32.5$\times$7.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Conidiophores were caespitose, straight, pale to golden brown and 67~280 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in length. When healthy cacti were inoculated with the isolates obtained form the lesion of diseased plants, the same characteristic symptoms as those in the field were produced. The symptom of four-month-old cactus was developed more rapidly than that of six-month-old cactus. The pathogen was reisolated from the artificially inoculated lesions.

  • Three fungal strains belonging to the class Sordariomycetes were isolated from soils collected from Gyeongsangbuk-do in Korea. They were identified as Cephalotrichum hinnuleum (UD CT 1-3-3 and KNU-19GWF1) and Thelonectria chlamydospora sp. nov. (UD ST 1-2-1). T. chlamydospora sp. nov. was morphologically identical to T. truncata, but its specific macroconidial dimensions, lower number of septations, and chlamydospore diameter render it distinct from the strains of the genus Thelonectria. The strains UD CT 1-3-3 and KNU-19GWF1 were developed flat, velvety to felty, and golden gray to brown-gray after 14 days of incubation at 25 ℃ on PDA. These strains were produced polyblastic conidiogenous cells and conidia were pale brown to brown, smooth, thin-walled, subglobose to ellipsoidal, arranged in chains, and the diameters of 6.7-9.0 × 3.7-5.1 ㎛. The strains were also confirmed by using the multi-locus genes using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, partial large subunit (LSU), translation elongation factor 1α (TEF1-α), β-tubulin (TUB2), and actin (ACT) genes. This is the discovery of T. chlamydospora sp. nov. and Cephalotrichum hinnuleum, a new record from Korea.

  • A severe outbreak of gray mold on kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was observed on kenaf grown in the research field of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Jinju, Korea in 2014. Gray mold appeared on young plants as gray-brown velvety mold covering stems and leaves. Infections that girdled the stem caused wilting above the infected area and developed a canker. The casual fungus formed grayish brown colonies on potato dextrose agar. The conidia were one celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape, colorless or pale brown in color, and 6-18 × 4-10 ㎛ in size. The conidiophores were 15-32 ㎛ in length. These measurements and taxonomic characteristics were most similar to those of Botrytis. DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the complete internal transcribed spacer rRNA gene region confirmed that the fungal isolates were indeed Borytis cinerea. Koch's postulates were supported by pathogenicity tests conducted on healthy plants. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Botrytis cinerea. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a gray mold caused by B. cinerea on kenaf in Korea.

  • Urea reacts with PtCl2, H2[PtCl6]·6H2O, H2[IrCl6] and Ni(CH3CO2)2 in aqueous solution at high temperature (60-80 °C) yielding [PtCl2(Urea)]·2H2O (1), (NH4)2[PtCl6] (2), (NH4)2[IrCl6]·H2O (3) and [Ni2(OH)2(NCO)2(H2O)2] (4) complexes, respectively. In complex 1, urea coordinates to Pt(II) as a neutral bidentate ligand via amido nitrogen atoms. In complexes 2, 3 and 4 it seems that the coordinated urea molecules decompose during the reaction at high temperature and a variety of reaction products are obtained. All complexes were isolated in moderate yields as dark green (1), yellow (2), pale brown (3) and faint green (4) precipitates, respectively. The reaction products were characterized by their microanalysis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectra as well as thermal analysis. General mechanisms describing the formation of these complexes were suggested.

  • This study intended to provide more refined information on color preferences by systematizing the concept of the color preference(general color preference, apparel color preference) and revealing different trends in the color preference and the actual possession of apparels. We collected data from 303 females in the ages between 20 and 40 in Seoul and analyzed by paired t-test. The results were as follows: 1. The analysis on general color preference, apparel color preference, and apparel possession color revealed that the cold colors such as blue and violet marked higher, and the warm colors such as yellow and orange marked lower in general color preference. For apparel color preference, neutral and brown were among the highest and the rest of the colors were in the same trend as general color preference. Apparel possession color showed defined accordance with apparel color preference. In terms of tones, pale tone marked the highest in general color preference and was followed by vivid, dull, and dark tones in decreasing order. For apparel color preference, pastel, dul1, and dark tones were among the highest. 2. Comparison between general color preference and apparel color preference in terms of hue showed that, except for orange, every hue showed disagreement in general color preference and apparel color preference. Neutral and brown hues marked higher in apparel color preference than in general color preference where as a]1 the other hues marked higher in general color preference. Comparison between apparel color preference and apparel possession color in terms of hue revealed that in most hues, apparel possession color was lower than apparel color preference. In terms of tones, vivid and pale tones marked higher in general color preference than in apparel color preference while dull and dark tones marked higher in apparel color preference than in general color preference.
