  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a major concern because of their potential mutagenic and carcinogenic risks to human beings. One of these harmful, yet commonly observed PAHs is pyrene. Pyrene is one of the 16 PAHs listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as priority pollutants. The purposes of this research are to develop a method of pretreatment for PAH contaminants prior to a typical biological treatment and to demonstrate the biodegradablity of these compounds. Since pyrene is non-polar, hexane was chosen as a solvent to effectively dissolve pyrene. Pyrene solutions were treated with ozone, as it has hish oxidation capacity and electrophilic character. The intermediates and byproducts of pyrene were dissolved in alkaline water at pH 11.4 and neutralized to test for $BOD_5$, COD, and toxicity. These solutions were further ozonated and assessed of biodegradability. The first-order rate constant to was found to be between $0.121day^{-1}$ and $0.081 day^{-1}$, depending on the duration of reozonation. The $BOD_5/COD$ ratio was found to 0.66. The toxicity test showed that after 10 min of reozonation time, the byproducts and intermediates of pyrene were within the lion-toxic range of ${\pm}10%$ inhibition for E-Coli bacteria.

  • Ozone concentrations in water and air, and resulting disinfective properties, were measured following generation by either an ozone generator or a low-temperature dielectric barrier discharge plasma generator. In freshwater, ozone concentrations of 0.81 and 0.48 mg/L $O_3$ were observed after the ozone and plasma generators had been operated for five minutes, respectively. Higher levels of dissolved $O_3$ were attained more easily with the ozone generator. In seawater, both systems were capable of creating concentrations greater than 3.00 mg/L $O_3$ after 5minutes of operation. Higher ozone levels were attained more easily in seawater than in freshwater. Rates of bacterial sterilization in seawater after three minutes were 96% and 88%, using the plasma and ozone generators, respectively. In freshwater, higher concentrations of ozone were released into the atmosphere by the ozone generator than by the plasma generator. In creating equivalent levels of dissolved ozone in freshwater, the plasma generator released 4.5 times more ozone into the atmosphere than did the ozone generator. This shows that ozone generators are more effective than plasma generators for creating ozonated water. For the same concentration of dissolved ozone in seawater, more ozone was released into the atmosphere using the ozone generator than using the plasma generator. Therefore, with regard to air pollution, plasma generators seem to be less expensive than ozone generators.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of paracetic acid (PAA) and ozone disinfection on the tensile bond strength (TBS) of silicone-based resilient liners to acrylic resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred and twenty dumbbell shaped heat-polymerized acrylic resins were prepared. From the mid segment of the specimens, 3 mm of acrylic were grinded off and separated parts were reattached by resilient liners. The specimens were divided into 2 control (control1, control7) and 4 test groups of PAA and ozone disinfection (PAA1, PAA7, ozone1 and ozone7; n=10). While control groups were immersed in distilled water for 10 min (control1) and 7 days (control7), test groups were subjected to PAA (16 g/L) or ozone rich water (4 mg/L) for 1 cycle (10 min for PAA and 60 min for ozone) per day for 7 days prior to tensile tests. Measurements of the TBS were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test. RESULTS. Adhesive strength of Mollosil decreased significantly by application of ozone disinfection. PAA disinfection had no negative effect on the TBS values of Mollosil and Molloplast B to acrylic resin. Single application of ozone disinfection did not have any negative effect on TBS values of Molloplast B, but prolonged exposure to ozone decreased its adhesive strength. CONCLUSION. The adhesion of resilient liners to acrylic was not adversely affected by PAA disinfection. Immersion in ozonated water significantly decreased TBS of Mollosil. Prolonged exposure to ozone negatively affects adhesion of Molloplast B to denture base materials.

  • In this study, the effects of biofilter media type (three different activated carbons and anthracite), empty bed contact time (EBCT) and temperature on the removal of four aldehyde species (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal and methylglyoxal) in BAC filters were investigated. Experiments were conducted at three water temperature (5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$) and four EBCTs (5, 10, 15, and 20 min). The experimental results indicated that the coal based BAC retained more bacterial biomass on the surface of the activated carbon than the other BACs, and increasing EBCT or increasing water temperature also increased the four aldehyde species removal in BAC filters. To achieve above 80% of removal efficiency for four aldehyde species in a BAC filter, above 15 min EBCT at $5^{\circ}C$ and 10 min EBCT at above $15^{\circ}C$ were required. The kinetic analysis indicated a first-order reaction rate for the biodegradation of four aldehyde species at various water temperatures. Data obtained from the BAC filters at various temperatures were also used to evaluate pseudo first-order rate constants for four aldehyde species. The half-lives evaluated for formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal and methylglyoxal in the coal-based BAC ranging from 0.89 to 3.19 min, from 0.75 to 3.35 min, from 2.16 to 4.72 min and from 1.49 to 3.86 min, respectively, could be used to assist water utilities in designing and operating BAC filters.

  • The goal of this study is to suggest the technology and the way of developing ergonomic shampoo device, which is able to adjust the height and to be devided, and it uses ozone water. As a result of developing the device, it can complete better the effect of preventing water splash than existing devices by making neck holding part higher. And it is also made with ergonomic design, therefore, the head of shampoo candidate can be drawn into it more easily. By adjusting water temperature($38^{\circ}C$) to candidate's taste through water heater attached to water bucket, when a candidate is being shampooed, it can help keep warm shampooing without delaying. We could know the process through temperature sensor. And we could also know the utility of its own sterilization(1PPM) and purification. Finally, ozone water was measured for 20 minutes and the ozone concentration was measured to be less than 1 PPM to ensure stability. All parts of the mobile shampoo stand together with the hot water device and the ozonated water conversion device were designed so as not to be inconvenient for the user to use.

  • In this paper efficient method for particle removal from silicon wafers by usage of HF and ozone was studied. It was found that at least 0.3 vol% concentration of HF was required for particle removal and removal efficiency increased with the application of megasonic in ozonated water. Additional cleaning with minute amount of ammonia (0.01 vol%) after HF/Ozone step showed over 99% in removal efficiency. It is proposed that the superior cleaning efficiency of HF-Ozone-ammonia is due to micro-etching of silicon surface and impediment of particle re-adsorption in alkali environment. Compared to SC-1 cleaning method micro roughness has also been slightly improved. Therefore it is expected that HF-ozone-ammonia cleaning method is a viable alternative to the conventional wet cleaning methods.

  • The demand of packaged baby leaves has been increased for its convenient use as fresh-cut produce. This investigation was aimed to explore the effects of different sanitizers on the quality parameters of 'Tah Tasai' Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var. narinosa) baby leaves. Thirteen days old baby leaves were harvested and washed in tap water (TW), 100 ppm chlorine solution (Cl), 2 ppm ozonated water ($O_3$), 15 ppm chlorine dioxide solution ($ClO_2$) and washing with 0.2% citric acid solution followed by 50% ethanol spray (CA+Et). The samples were then packaged in 50 ${\mu}m$ polyethylene bags and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. Off-odor of packaged baby leaves was not detected during storage. There was no significant difference in color parameters among the treatments. Samples treated with $O_3$ showed substantially higher electrolyte leakage throughout the storage. This treatment also rendered a higher accumulation of $CO_2$ in the packages. Samples treated with Cl and CA+Et maintained good overall visual quality with higher scores compared to that of $O_3$ and $ClO_2$. Although Cl treatment showed lower number of total aerobic count at the beginning of storage, citric acid in combination with ethanol treatment was more effective until the end of storage. The combined treatment also showed comparatively lower coliform plate count. This result indicates that citric acid wash followed by ethanol spray could be an alternative to chlorine for environment friendly sanitization of baby leaves.

  • Effect of ozonation on permeate flux was studied by using polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane. The filtration was first carried out by permeating phenol solutions under 3$kg_{f}$/$cm^2$ until steady-state flux was obtained. Then, the ozone of concentration range between 10 and 45 mg/1.min was ozonated in water for reducing the fouling on the UF membrane. Treatment of chemical wastewater by combined ozone and membrane filtration methods was also investigated for the final purpose. The Fenton method assisted by chemical coagulation was employed as a prtreatment method and found to be highly efficient in removing a large amount of organic compounds. And it was found that the ozonation made the permeate flux enhance in the phenol solution and phenolic-chemical wastewaster by 10% and oxidation by ozone and hydrogen peroxide was more effective. Evidence was presented that TMP decreased in more ozone concentrated water and it was found that the ozone-mediated membrane would have a limited role to prevent the membrane fouling rather than to eliminate fully.

  • Recycled irrigation water is a primary inoculum source of Phytophthora spp. and is capable of spreading propagules throughout nursery cultivation. Ozonation is commonly used to disinfest the recycled irrigation water; however, ozone has not been fully researched as a disinfectant for this purpose. In this study, zoospores of four species of Phytophthora were exposed for $1{\sim}9$ min to free available ozone at $0.1{\sim}0.3,\;0.5{\sim}0.7,\;0.9{\sim}1.2,\;1.4{\sim}1.7\;and\;1.9{\sim}2.2mg/l$. Zoospores, mycelial fragments, and culture plugs of P. nicotianae also were exposed to ozone concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 2.2 mg/l for periods ranging from 1 to 9 min. In addition, ozonated water was assayed monthly in 2004 and 2005 at two commercial nurseries, and quarterly in the first year at two other nurseries in Suwon, for ozone and survival of pythiaceous species using a selective medium. No zoospores of any species tested survived endpoint free ozone at 1.4 mg/l while limited mycelial fragments of P. nicotianae survived at 1.9 mg/l, and mycelial plugs treated at the same level of ozone were able to produce few sporangia. Phytophthora spp. were recovered only from nursery irrigation water with levels of free ozone at 0.3 mg/l or lower. The results of this study are essential for improving current ozonation sterilization.
