  • $TiO_2$ is a wide band-gap semiconductor (3.4 eV) and can only absorb about 5% of sun light in the ultraviolet light region, which largely limits its practical applications because of the lower utility of sun light and quantum yield. In order to move the absorption edge of $TiO_2$ films to visible spectrum range, we have made the impurity level within a band-gap of $TiO_2$ thin film by introduction of oxygen vacancy. Oxygen-defected $TiO_2$ thin film have prepared by reactive sputtering with the partial pressure of Ar:$O_2$=10:90~99.33:0.66 ratio. As a result, we could have the impurity level of about 2.75 eV on condition that oxygen partial pressure is below 7%.

  • Antimicrogbial activity of Veratrum alkaloids against Pityrosporum ovale. Trichopyton mentagrophytes, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae were investgated. Of the alkaloids tested, only jervaeratrum alkaloids exhibited antimicrobial activity. The most basic structural requirement for activity of jerveratrum alkaloids is mainly due to the introduction of an oxygen in ring C regardless of the difference in structural types. Glucoside is more active than alkamine, suggesting the assistance in the trasport processes.

  • A synthetic route to (+)-isocarbacyclin starting from (-)-tricyclo[3.3.0.0$^{2.8}$]octan-3-one 6 is described. The key intermediate 4 has been synthesized from 6 by a sequential introduction of methoxycarbonyl group at C-12 and the oxygen functionality at C-9${\alpha}$(PG numbering) for the construction of ${\alpha}-and\;{\omega}$-side chain, and then converted to isocarbacyclin methyl ester 2.

  • Purpose: This study compared the pain-relieving effects of human milk, sucrose, and distilled water during examinations for retinopathy of prematurity. Methods: Forty-five preterm infants were randomly assigned to receive a pacifier dipped in one of three solutions: human milk (n=14), 24% sucrose (n=15), or distilled water (n=16), 2 minutes before an eye examination. Their pain score, pulse rate, and oxygen saturation were measured at three time points: 5 minutes before the examination, 30 seconds after speculum introduction, and 2 minutes after the examination. Results: The infants' mean gestational age and weight at birth were $33.1{\pm}2.1$ weeks and $1,842{\pm}470g$, respectively. There were no between-group differences in pain relief during the eye examination. The pain score significantly increased both during (p<.001) and after the examinations (p=.003). Oxygen saturation decreased during the examinations (p<.001); however, the infants in the 24% sucrose group showed higher oxygen saturation (p=.047) during the examinations than the infants in the other groups. Conclusion: Sucking on a pacifier dipped in human milk or 24% sucrose did not reduce the pain associated with eye examinations in preterm infants. Pacifiers dipped in sucrose can be used to maintain better oxygen saturation during these examinations.

  • Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is photo-treatment of malignant or benign diseases using photosensitizing agents, light, and oxygen which generates cytotoxic reactive oxygens and induces tumour regressions. Several photodynamic treatments have been extensively studied and the photosensitizers (PS) are key to their biological efficacy, while laser and oxygen allow to appropriate and flexible delivery for treatment of diseases. Introduction: In presence of oxygen and the specific light triggering, PS is activated from its ground state into an excited singlet state, generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induces apoptosis of cancer tissues. Those PS can be divided by its specific efficiency of ROS generation, absorption wavelength and chemical structure. Main body: Up to dates, several PS were approved for clinical applications or under clinical trials. $Photofrin^{(R)}$ is the first clinically approved photosensitizer for the treatment of cancer. The second generation of PS, Porfimer sodium ($Photofrin^{(R)}$), Temoporfin ($Foscan^{(R)}$), Motexafin lutetium, Palladium bacteriopheophorbide, $Purlytin^{(R)}$, Verteporfin ($Visudyne{(R)}$), Talaporfin ($Laserphyrin^{(R)}$) are clinically approved or under-clinical trials. Now, third generation of PS, which can dramatically improve cancer-targeting efficiency by chemical modification, nano-delivery system or antibody conjugation, are extensively studied for clinical development. Conclusion: Here, we discuss up-to-date information on FDA-approved photodynamic agents, the clinical benefits of these agents. However, PDT is still dearth for the treatment of diseases in specifically deep tissue cancer. Next generation PS will be addressed in the future for PDT. We also provide clinical unmet need for the design of new photosensitizers.

  • Transparent conductive oxide films have been widely used in the field of flat panel display (FPD). Transparent conductive Indium Zinc Oxide (IZO) thin films with excellent chemical stability have attracted much attention as an alternative material for Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) films. In this study, using $In_2O_3$ and ZnO powder mixture with a ratio of 90 : 10 wt% as a target, IZO films are prepared on polynorbornene (PNB) substrates by electron beam evaporation. The effect of thickness and $O_2$ introduction flow rate on the optical, electrical, structural properties and surface composition of deposited IZO films were investigated by UV/Visible spectrophotometer, 4-point probe method, SEM, XRD and XPS.

  • Polypropylene(PP) films were treated with plasma glow discharge to produce peroxy radicals on the surfaces. The peroxy radicals formed on the PP film surfaces were subsequently used for the graft polymerization of acrylic acid and acrylamide in an aqueous solution by heating, respectively. Introduction of acrylic acid and acrylamide on the PP film could be confirmed by the observation of carbonyl and primary amine absorptions based on carboxylic acid and amide, respectively. And introduction of functional group could be confirmed by weight analysis and ESCA. The water contact angle(90$^{\circ}$) of PP film was constant, irrespective of elapsed time, while plasma-treated and functional monomer-grafted PP films were slowly increased with elapsed time, showing the rearrangement of surface polar groups in air condition. The water contact angle$(90^\circ)$ of PP film was decreased by the plasma treatment$(56^\circ)$ and further decreased by the grafting of acrylic acid$(34^\circ)$ and acrylamide$(37^\circ)$, indicating increased hydrophilicity of the modified surfaces. The water contact angle of plasma-treated PP film increased a little as time elapsing. The half-life periods of surface voltage on acrylic acid-(31sec) and acrylamide-grafted PP(42sec) were significantly decreased when compared to those on PP(950sec) and plasma-treated PP film(241sec). In the experiments using acid, basic and disperse dyes, absorbance and $\Delta{E}$ values of functional monomer-grafted PP films were significantly increased than that of oxygen plasma-treated one.

  • SiC-C films were deposited with r. f. magnetron sputtering on substrates followed by argon ion bombardment. These films were then permeated by hydrogen gas under the pressure of $3.23\times10^{7}$ Pa for 3 hours at temperature of 500K or bombarded with hydrogen ion beam at 5 keV and a dose of $1\times10^{18}$ ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. SIMS, AES and XPS were used to analyze hydrogen related species, chemical bonding states of C, Si as well as contamination oxygen due to hydrogen participation in the SiC-C films in order to study the different behaviors of hydrogen in carbon-carbide films due to different hydrogen introduction. Related mechanism about the effects of hydrogen on the element of the SiC-C films was discussed in this paper.

  • Cluster systems are microcrystals of vanadiumoxided compounds such as Barium, Calcium or Sodium Metavanadates or Sodium Vanadium Bronze which are distributed into dimethyl- or diethylphosphites or microcrystals of vanadium oxides, for instance, vanadium oxide (+3), distributed into the methylphosphonic acid melted. During the interaction of vanadium compounds with the correspondent phosphororganic substances biue viscous liquids are formed. These liquids have paramagnetic properties. According to the UV and IR spectroscopic investigations as well as the results of EPR spectra the substances obtained consist of the nucleus containing 6 to 12 of vanadium atoms and the shell including ligands which are molecules of phosphites or methylphosphonic acid. Here every atom of vanadium interacts with four of phosphorus containing molecules. Sizes of the particles in these systems donot exceed 200 nm. Introduction of cluster systems (0,1 -0,3 % vanadium) into epoxy compositions before the introduction of curing agent - polyethylenepolyamine 6 -8 % leads to the acceleration of composition crosslinking and to the combustion decreasing: 1) Oxygen Index grows to 35: 2)mass losses during combustion decrease to 1-2%, 3) combustion time does not exceed 1 s; 4) the intumescence of material sample is being observed during the burner action as well as the foam coke formation.
