  • The encapsulation of the Purified bovine hemoglobin with Phospholipids obtained from egg folk was performed using a rotary vacuum evaporator. The prepared Hb-containing liposome (hemosome) had good properties as artificial red blood cell. The shape and size of the hemosomes were measured by a phase contrast microscope and image analyzer. The function of the hemosome as oxygen carrier was tested by measuring oxygen saturation curve with blood gas analyzer and infusing it into rats. The prepared hemosome was 1.184 + 0.423 ${\mu}m$ in diameter and round in shape. $P_{50}$ value of the hemosome solution was 28 mmHg. The synthesized red cells seem to function as oxygen carrier, because the severely bled rats were prolonged in their life by transfusion of the hemosome solution containing bovine hemoglobin.

  • In this study, RF magnetron sputtering was used to investigate the relationship between oxygen vacancy and carrier concentration in a GZO film on an amorphous structure. RF power was fixed at 50W and Ar flow was changed on a glass plate to create a thin film at room temperature. The transmittance of Al-adopted amorphous GZO was measured at 85% or higher; therefore, the transmittance was shown to be outstanding in all films. The hall mobility was also shown to be higher at the film showing the high transmittance at a short-wavelength, whereas the optical energy gap was shown to be higher at the film with high oxygen vacancy. The oxygen vacancy at the amorphous oxide semi-conductor increased the optical energy gap while it was not directly involved in increasing the mobility. The oxygen vacancy increases the carrier concentration while lowering the quality of amorphous structure; such factor, therefore affected the mobility. The increase of amorphous property is a direct way to increase the mobility of amorphous oxide semi-conductor.

  • Syngas combustion characteristics of mass produced oxygen carrier particle (OCN706-1100) were investigated in a pressurized fluidized bed reactor using simulated syngas and air as reactants for reduction and oxidation, respectively. The oxygen carrier showed high fuel conversion, high $CO_2$ selectivity, and low CO concentration at reduction conditions and no NO emission at oxidation conditions. Moreover, OCN706-1100 particle showed good regeneration ability during successive reduction-oxidation cyclic tests up to the 10th cycle. Fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity decreased and CO emission increased as temperature increased. These results can be explained by trend of calculated equilibrium CO concentration with temperature. However, fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity increased and CO emission decreased as pressure and gas residence time increased.

  • A cellulose acetate membrane containing silver nitrate was prepared by gelatinizing in water at $2^{\circ}C$ after evaporating solvent from the casting solution on a glass plate. Permeation experiments for oxygen and nitrogen were conducted in the ranges of temperature, $5-40^{\circ}C$ and pressure difference, $1-5kg/cm^2$ in order to investigate the effects of temperature and pressure difference on permeation characteristics of the membrane. When the evaporation time was increased, the permeability of oxygen decreased but the separation factor of oxygen against nitrogen increased since a more dense layer was formed on the membrane surface. When the silver nitrate was added, the permeation flux was doubled and the separation factor was improved from 3.0 to 3.3. This implies that silver nitrate acts as an oxygen carrier in the membrane.

  • To check applicability of recently developed new oxygen carrier for 0.5 MWth chemical looping combustion system, reactivity tests were carried out at high temperature and high pressure conditions. Pressure, temperature, gas velocity, $CH_4$ flow rate, and solid height were considered as operating variables. The new oxygen carrier (N016-R4) showed not only high fuel conversion but also high $CO_2$ selectivity within all the operating conditions in this study. The reactivity of N016-R4 particle was compared with previous oxygen carriers. The N016-R4 particle represented outstanding reactivity among 10 oxygen carriers in terms of fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity.

  • The intrinsic oxygen-vacancy defects in ZnO have prevented the preparation of p-type ZnO with high carrier concentration. Therefore, in this work, the effect of the concentration of H2O2 (used as an oxygen source) on the oxygen-vacancy concentration in ZnO prepared by atomic layer deposition was investigated. The results indicated that the oxygen-vacancy concentration in the ZnO film decreased by the oxygen-rich growth conditions when using H2O2 as the oxygen precursor instead of a conventional oxygen source such as H2O. The suppression of oxygen vacancies decreased the carrier concentration and increased the resistivity. Moreover, the growth orientation changed to the (002) plane, from the combined (100) and (002) planes, with the increase in H2O2 concentration. The passivation of oxygen-vacancy defects in ZnO can contribute to the preparation of p-type ZnO.

  • To select the best oxygen carrier particle for syngas fueled chemical-looping combustor, the reduction reactivity and carbon deposition characteristics were determined in a thermogravimetric analyzer. Four kinds of oxygen carrier particles (NiO/bentonite, $NiO/LaAl_{11}O_{18}$, $Co_xO_y/CoAl_2O_4$, $NiO/NiAl_2O_4$) were tested with the simulated syngas (30% $H_2$, 10% $CO_2$, 60% CO) as a reduction gas. With each of these particles, the maximum conversion and oxygen transfer capacity increase with increasing the reduction temperature At the given experimental range, the optimum operating temperature to maximize oxygen transfer rate is found to be $900^{\circ}C$ and carbon deposition on the particles could avoid at the temperature above $800^{\circ}C$. Among four kinds of oxygen carrier particles, the NiO-based particles exhibits better reactivity than the CoO-based particle. Moreover, the NiO/bentonite particle produces the best reactivity based on the oxygen transfer rate and the degree of carbon deposition. The measured oxygen transfer rate increases as the metal oxide content in NiO/bentonite particle is increased thereby higher metal oxide contents could provide stable operation of chemical-looping combustor.

  • LNG combustion characteristics of oxygen carrier particles were investigated in a batch type bubbling fluidized bed reactor. Three particles, NiO/bentonite, $NiO/NiAl_2O_4$, $CO_xO_y/CoAl_2O_4$, were used as oxygen carrier particles and LNG and air were used as reactants for reduction and oxidation, respectively. In the reducer, high gas conversion and high $CO_2$ selectivity were achieved for all three particles. In the oxidizer, NOx was not detected. The results of exhaust gas analysis showed that inherent $CO_2$ separation and NOx-free combustion are possible in the LNG fueled chemical-looping combustion system with NiO/bentonite, $NiO/NiAl_2O_4$ and $Ca_xO_y/CoAl_2O_4$ particles.

  • A series of steady-state and short-term experiments on a three-phase circulating-bed biofilm reactor (CBBR) for removing toluene from gas streams were conducted to investigate the effect of macroporous-carrier size (1-mm cubes versus 4-mm cubes, which have the same total surface area) on CBBR performance. Experimental conditions were identical, except for the carrier size. The CBBR with 1-mm carriers (the 1-mm CBBR) overcame the performance limitation observed with the CBBR with 4-mm carriers (the 4-mm CBBR): oxygen depletion inside the biofilm. The 1-mm CBBR consistently had the superior removal efficiencies of toluene and COD, higher than 93% for all, and the advantage was greatest for the highest toluene loading, $0.12\;M/m^2-day$. The 1-mm carriers achieved superior performance by minimizing the negative effects of oxygen depletion, because they had 4.7 to 6.8 times thinner biofilm depths. The 1-mm carriers continued to provide protection from excess biomass detachment and inhibition from toluene. Finally, the 1-mm CBBR achieved volumetric removal capacities up to 300 times greater than demonstrated by other biofilters treating toluene and related volatile hydrocarbons.
