This study was investigated to the effect of oxygen barrier of four different packaging films of the shelf life of proessed meat product by the simulated distribution test and storage test. The microbial growth, pH, VBN content, TBA value, color change and sensory evaluation were compared during the 2-month storage period at 4, 10, $20^{\circ}C$ after finished the simulated distribution test. The oxygen transmission rates ($cc/m^2$ day) were BF001: 27,88; BF003; 12.30;NY; 77.98; EVOM; 0.41 respectively. The packaging films were not effected on the changes of pH, VBN content, TBA value and color during the storage period. The aerobic microbial growth was increased only at $20^{\circ}C$ in the order of growth rate in the following films;NY > BF001 > BF003 > EVOH. Therefore, the microbial growth was affected significantly by the properties of oxygen barrier off packaging films and it should be an indicator of establishing the shelf life processed meat product.
Epoxy functionalized organic-inorganic hybrid materials (hybrimers) were synthesized by sol-gel reaction for application in OLED barrier coating. By using the calcium degradation method, the oxygen transition rate (OTR) and water vapor transition rate (WVTR) measured so far is $10^{-2}cc/m^2$-day for oxygen and $10^{-1}g/m^2$-day for water molecules with single hybrimer coating film, respectively. Encapsulated OLED devices have life time of 14hrs of a single hybrimer barrier coating and 29hrs of hybrimer/inorganic double barrier coatings at $25^{\circ}C$ and 60% relative humidity.

A SiOxCy(-H) thin film was synthesized by atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge(APDBD), and a SiO2-like layer was formed on the surface of the film by oxidation treatment using oxygen plasma. Hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane was used as a precursor for the SiOxCy(-H) synthesis, and He gas was used for stabilizing APDBD. Oxygen permeability was evaluated by forming an oxidized SiOxCy(-H) thin film on a PET film. When the single-layer oxidized SiOxCy(-H) film was coated on the PET, the oxygen gas permeability decreased by 46% compared with bare PET. In case of three-layer oxidized SiOxCy(-H) film, the oxygen gas permeability decreased by 73%. The oxygen permeability was affected by the thickness of the SiO2-like layer formed by oxidation treatment rather than the thickness of the SiOxCy(-H) film. The excellent corrosion resistance was demonstrated by coating an oxidized SiOxCy(-H) thin film on the silver-coated aluminum PCB for light emitting diode (LED).
A global trend of replacing metal or glass containers with polymer-based packaging materials has been prevalent in the food packaging industry due to their ease in processibility, excellent transparency, and good cost efficiency. Barrier polymers tend to show low permeabilities for atmospheric gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor, which allow them to be utilized in the food and beverage packaging industry. With the current global trend, expansion of polymeric packaging materials to new markets such as oxygen sensitive juices, flavored water, and energy drinks requires improved $CO_2$ and $O_2$ barrier properties. The improvement of the existing polymer-based barrier platform will enable a rapid market impact. In this paper, the current barrier technologies such as (1) antiplasticization-induced barrier materials, (2) synergistic effect of antiplasticization and crystallization, (3) new barrier polymers, (4) nanocomposite materials, and (5) polymer blending are introduced with their characterization techniques for the development of advanced packaging materials.
Ultrathin films were coated on low density Polyethylene (LDPE) food packaging films by plasma polymerization of methane, acetylene, hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), and HMDSO+oxygen to improve the barrier property of the LDPE films. The film coated in HMDSO +oxygen (flow rate: 0.6+ 9.0 SCCM) plasma at 40 W for 10 min showed the highest improvement in the barrier property against oxygen, reducing the permeability of oxygen as much as 18.6 times. The film coated in acetylene (flow rate 0.75 SCCM) plasma at 10 W for 10 min showed the highest improvement in the barrier property against carbon dioxide and moisture, reducing the permeability of carbon dioxide and moisture as much as 12.0 and 3.0 times, respectively. In addition, cherry tomato, cucumber, and mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) wrapped with the coated films were kept fresh $1.5{\sim}3.0$ times longer than those wrapped with an LDPE film.
Plasma properties of dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) at atmospheric pressure were measured and characterized using optical emission spectroscopy. Optical emissions were measured from argon, nitrogen, or air discharges generated at 5-9 kV using 20 kHz power supply. Emissions from nitrogen molecules were markedly measured, irrespective of discharge gases. The intensity of emission peaks was increased with applied voltage and electrode gap. The short wavelength peaks (315.9 nm and 337.1 nm) measured at the middle of DBDs were significantly increased with applied voltage. The optical emission from DBDs decreased with the addition of oxygen gas, which was especially significant in argon discharge. Emission from oxygen molecules cannot be measured from air discharge and argon discharge with 4.8% oxygen. The emission intensity at 337.1 nm and 357.7 nm related with nitrogen molecule was sensitively changed with electrode types and discharge voltages. However, the pattern of argon emission spectrum was nearly the same, irrespective of electrode type, oxygen content, and discharge voltage.

Photo Resist (PR) ashing process was carried out with the atmospheric pressure- dielectric barrier discharge (ADBD) using $SF_6/N_2/O_2$. Ashing rate (AR) was sensitive to the mixing ratio of the oxygen and nitrogen of the blower type of ADBD asher. The maximum AR of 5000 A/min was achieved at 2% of oxygen in the $N_2$ plasma. With increasing the oxygen concentration to more than 2% in the $N_2$ plasma, the discharge becomes weak due to the high electron affinity of oxygen, resulting in the decrease of AR. When adding 0.5% of SF6 to $O_2/N_2$ mixed plasma, the PR AR increased drastically to 9000 A/min and the ashed surface of PR was smoother compared to the processed surface without $SF_6$. Carbon Fluorinated polymer may passivate the PR surface. It was also observed that the glass surface was not damaged by the fluorine.
In this study, biaxially oriented film process was used to improve barrier property of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) blends by inducing a laminar morphology of the dispersed phase in the matrix phase. In order to examine the extent of deformation during melt extrusion process, the rheological properties of the resins were measured and the viscosity ratio of the dispersed phase to the continuous phase was determined. The effects of compatibilizer content, draw ratio, and draw temperature on the oxygen permeability and morphology of biaxially drawn blend films were studied. The laminar morphology of the EVOH phase with a larger area of thinner layer induced by biaxial orientation was found to result in a significant increase in oxygen barrier property of PP/EVOH (85/15) blends by about 10 times relative to the pure PP When both PP-g-MAH and ionomer were used as the compatibilizers, there existed an optimum level of compatibilizer content for obtaining improved barrier properties with a well developed laminar structure. In addition, higher draw ratio and draw temperature were found to be more favorable processing conditions in obtaining higher barrier blends.

Temperature dependent reverse-bias current-voltage (I-V) characteristics in Cu Schottky contacts to oxygen plasma treated n-InP were investigated. For untreated sample, current transport mechanisms at low and high temperatures were explained by thermionic emission (TE) and TE combined with barrier lowering, respectively. For plasma treated sample, experimental I-V data were explained by TE or TE combined with barrier lowering models at low and high temperatures. However, the current transport was explained by a thermionic field emission (TFE) model at intermediate temperatures. From X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, phosphorus vacancies (VP) were suggested to be generated after oxygen plasma treatment. VP possibly involves defects contributing to the current transport at intermediate temperatures. Therefore, minimizing the generation of these defects after oxygen plasma treatment is required to reduce the reverse-bias leakage current.
The performance of computer systems and the development of various computer simulation programs have made it possible to analyze chemical systems composed of more complex elements, and accordingly, research using molecular dynamics simulation is being actively conducted. Research on calculating the gas permeation characteristics of polymer membranes by molecular dynamics, which was previously conducted mainly through experiments, is receiving attention for gas barrier membranes used in food packaging and pharmaceuticals. Recently, there has been a report that a gas barrier effect appears when a coating film is made using silk fibroin, and in this study, a study was conducted using molecular dynamics simulation to confirm whether an oxygen barrier effect appears when a composite film is made using silk fibroin. We built a single model, calculated the gas permeation characteristics, and compared it with the experimental value to confirm that the model reflects the actual experimental results. Actual composite membrane models were then built and the gas movement path within the polymer was analyzed. As a result, oxygen molecules were found that they could not pass through and was blocked in the fibroin region. Therefore, the composite membrane with silk fibroin has excellent oxygen barrier property and is expected to be useful in food packaging, etc.
