  • To assay for antioxidant capacity of natural products considered important in producing human health benefits, a practical and economical method using pellet techniques was developed. A standard visualizing reagent, 1,1diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), was mixed with a water-miscible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), serving as a solid phase support for the DPPH reagent. A DPPH pellet was prepared by dropping a small volume of the DPPH solution onto PET film, and drying in an oven. The PVA-based DPPH pellet was dissolved into water, in which the water-miscible PVA plays as a non-ionic surfactant to help the DPPH reagent to be dissolved into the solvent. Using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant capacity of water-soluble extracts of black soybean, barley, green tea, and green gram was examined. Among the natural products tested, green tea showed the highest antioxidant capacity. This PVA-based DPPH antioxidant assay can be further applied in the natural food, raw plant material, and health product inspection field.

  • Currently, interest in the quality of concrete is increasing. Among the important factors for evaluating the quality of concrete, interest in unit-water content is also increasing. Currently, the air-meter method, the microwave oven drying method, the capacitance method, and the microwave penetration method are used to measure the unit-water content of concrete.. Among the above methods, except for the microwave method, the measurement method is complicated, portability is reduced, and economic efficiency is reduced. This research aims to measure a unit-water content by using a Frequency Domain Reflectometry(FDR) sensor that is economical, simple to measure, and portable among microwave methods. In addition, it is an experimental study to determine the accuracy of unit-water content using a single input residual model during deep learning to solve the limitations of the FDR sensor.

  • 6-gingerol can be converted to 6-shogaol, one of the predominant active compounds found in ginger, via processing such as drying and extraction. Subcritical water extraction is the environmentally friendly method of extraction of bioactive compounds using only purified water as a solvent. This study investigated subcritical water extraction ($190^{\circ}C$, 15 min) of 6-gingerol, and 6-shogaol from dried ginger (Zingiber officinale) including drying conditions such as temperature (room temperature, 60, $80^{\circ}C$, and freeze drying) and time duration for drying (1-4 h). The amount of 6-gingerol was found to be reduced, and that of 6-shogaol was found to be increased depending upon the water content of dried ginger. Upon oven-drying ginger at $60^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, the maximum yields of 6-gingerol ($0.18{\pm}0.02mg/g$ fresh weight), and 6-shogaol ($0.47{\pm}0.02mg/g$ fresh weight) were obtained upon subcritical water extraction.

  • Recently, highly porous bone substitutes, which have interconnected open pore structure, have been focused on improving their mechanical properties and modifying their functions. Especially, it is highly required to develop functional gradient structured bone substitute which is available for controlling their material properties such as bioresorption rate and elastic modulus. Porous $ZrO_2$ scaffold was fabricated by the sponge replica method using PU sponge. After 3 times of dip coating and the subsequent oven drying, burning out and microwave sintering were carried out. Various $ZrO_2$-BCP powder mixtures were prepared depending on the ratio and coated on the $ZrO_2$ scaffold by dip coating process. X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to characterize the phase identification of the scaffolds. Microstructures of the bone substitutes were observed using scanning electron microscopy.

  • An experimental design has been used to optimize the analysis of volatile component from fresh ginseng using solvent free solid injector (SFSI). The analysis were performed at three different sample preparing methods (fresh, oven drying and freezed drying), different injector port temperatures (100, 150, 200, 250 and $300^{\circ}C$) and different preheating time (3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 min) according to the above experimental design. The optimum conditions from analytical results were fresh sample (sample preparing methods), $250^{\circ}C$ (injector temperature) and 10 min (preheating time). Ginsengs grown for six years at Gumsan were prepared for fresh, white and red ginsengs. These fresh, white and red singsengs were analyzed for their volatile components by GC/MS equipped with SFSI according to the above the optimum conditions. A total of thirty-three volatile components were identified in fresh ginseng by SFSI, thirty-six in white ginseng and thirty-eight in red ginseng. These results suggested that the SFSI method could be used for isolating volatile component in ginsengs.

  • Platycodin D was isolated from n-butanol extract of Platycodi radix(Platycodon grandiflorum and identified by the spectroscopic analysis using $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR techniques. A new method of analysis of platycodin D by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) was established using a reversed phase system with YMC-Pack ODS-AM( 250 X 4.6 mm) column and 30% acetonitrile as a mobile phase. Evaporative light scattering detector was used as detector. The kinds of extraction solvents and methods were examined to determine the efficient extraction condition and HPLC analysis was carried out to establish the optimum drying condition for the root of Platycodon grandiflorum. The contents of Platycodin D was highest as 0.083% when platycodon roots were dried at $60^{\circ}C$ using dry oven.

  • The existing shattering-resistant sesames had low adaptability and yield potential in Korean environment. Great improvements have been made in these shattering-resistant sesames. We take an optimistic view of success for development of shattering-resistant sesames with high yield potential and superior agronomic characters. This study was carried out to investigate cause of shattering resistance and testing method of effective shattering habit. Shattering-resistant sesames had some specific tissue structures. Shattering resistance of placenta adhesion (PA) sesames was caused by strong seed holding of placenta in capsule, and that of seamless (SL) sesames was caused by nonexistence of seam in capsule. Shattering resistance of indehiscent(ID) sesames resulted because they had thicker mesocarp barrier at the zone of dehiscence compared with that of normal varieties. SL, ID and PA sesames had some variation plants who had high shattering rate. This was judged that evolution direction of these sesames means direction that shattering habit increase. Effective drying method in order to measure shattering resistance was drying condition over 20 days in natural temperature $(20^{\circ}C)$ and 10 days in drying oven $(40^{\circ}C)$.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine changes in the residues of procymidone and diazinon in Chwinamul, pepper leaves, and young radish according to drying method. When the three vegetables were dried at room with air stream, the residues of procymidone and diazinon increased, but after being adjusted to reflect the decrease in water content of the vegetables, the residues declined by 10 to 83 percent. When they were dried in a oven, the residues of the pesticides in the vegetables also increased, but after being adjusted to reflect the drop in the water content, the residues decreased by 44 to 71 percent. According to the results, the residues of the pesticides mostly decreased after being adjusted to reflect the drop in the water content of the dried vegetables. Therefore, when judging dried agricultural products not only the decreased water content of dried vegetables but also other factors that affect pesticide residues during the drying process should be considered. This raises the need for additional research on such factors.

  • This study examined the effects of multiple recycling on deinkability and properties of recycled paper from laser computer printout (LCPO). First, alkaline paper with a 20% printed area was disintegrated by TAPPI standard disintegrator at room temperature. After dewatering, the pulp was flotated and dried in oven at80$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. A sequence of wetting, disintegrating, flotating and drying was one recycling cycle and this cyclic treatment was repeated from zero to five times. The recycled handsheet dropped to 90% of the original brightness after five cycles, and lost the most brightness after five cycles, and lost the most brightness in the first two cycles. However, it had a gain of 10% in opacity after five cycles as the same as the case of nonprinting. And, in this study, the method for determining residual ink(toner) content in recycled handsheets ere established by means of SEM-EDX and Py-GC. The change of residual ink percentage on recycled paper showed the effect of recycling numbers on deinkability of waste paper. A slight decrease in deinkability was noted for the recycled handsheets, which may be due to the change of fiber surface free energy connected with fiber swelling.
