  • Herbicidal effects and crop selectivity of aqueous leaf extracts of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) were evaluated against several weed species for developing sustainable weed management in organic farming. Aqueous sorghum leaf extracts were highly phytotoxic to different weed species. No broadleaf weeds were germinated in the concentration of 5 fold or higher concentrated sorghum leaf extracts and 90% of seed germination was inhibited within that range in grass species. Sorghum leaf extracts strongly inhibited the growth of different weeds by pre-emergence and foliar applications in greenhouse condition. Foliar application of sorghum leaf extracts had a higher inhibitory effect than the pre-emergence application. Broadleaf weed species were more susceptible than grasses to the application of sorghum leaf extract in foliar applications than grasses. Galium spurium, Erigeron candensis, and Rumex japonicus were completely killed at the highest concentrated sorghum leaf extract both in pre-emergence and foliar application. Most broadleaf weed species were inhibited more than 80% at pre-emergence application at 50 fold concentrated sorghum leaf extract. G. spurium, E. candensis, R. japonicus, Eclipta alba, Plantago asiatica and Portulaca oleraeea were most susceptible to sorghum leaf extract in foliar application. Growth of most broad leaf weed species was suppressed by greater than 90% at 50 fold concentrated sorghum leaf extract. Most crop species were tolerant to sorghum leaf extract but shoot growth was slightly reduced by the application of 40~50 fold concentrated extracts, Sorghum leaf extract may used to control weeds in organic fanning without affecting the growth of crop.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the influence of variouis organic substrates on growth and yield of organically grown ginseng seedlings in a shaded plastic house. In the investigation of optimal substrate, the eight substrate were formulated by adjusting blending rate of peatmoss, perlite, coir dust(coco peat), and vermiculite. Then, the changes in physico chemical properties of root substrates as well as their influences on the growth characteristics and yield were determined at six months after sowing. The elevation of the blending rate of peatmoss from 50% to 70% with decrease in the rate of inorganic component (mixture of perlite and vermiculite) from 50 to 30% resulted in the increase in container capacities and decrease in total porosities and air-filled capacities. The concentrations of $NH_4-N$, $P_2O_5$ and K increased as the incorporation rate of castor seed meal, phosphate ore, and langbenite, respectively, were elevated during the root medium formulations. The PPV-1 and PPV-4 substrates produced high stem length, stem diameter, shoot fresh weight, leaf area and root length among eight substrate. Root fresh weight was heaviest in PPV-4 compound nursery media. The results of this experiment will be utilized in the new substrate application for ginseng organic culture in shaded vinyl house.

  • The toxic compounds of sorghum stem extracts were isolated by different organic solvents and pH, and characterized and quantified in terms of their inhibition of seed germination and seedling growth in Echinochloa colona(L.) Link and radish(Raphanus sativus L.). Sequential partitioning of stem extract with various organic solvents with increasing polarity showed that all fractions of hexane, ethyl ether, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, and the aqueous remainder inhibited germination and seedling growth in E. colona. Of the five fractions, the ethyl ether fraction had the greatest inhibitory effect on E. colona. Further separation of the ethyl ether fraction at different pH(pH 2-11) showed that phytotoxic compounds were acidic. The result indicates that the phytotoxin present in the stem extract may be nonpolar and acidic.

  • This experiment was carried out for development of environment-friendly agriculture materials to control Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) in eggplant. Plant growth investigated the spray at intervals of 7 days after transplanting on 8 environment-friendly agriculture materials, such as egg-yolk and cooking oil, Results were to be good in the control and neem products. B. tabaci population density adult and nymph was low at the dinotefuran WG chemical treatment, and also low neem products of environment-friendly agriculture material. We have investigated the effect of different concentration of neem products on B. tabaci population density. Yield was high in the dinotefuran WG, and hight in the neem products and papper seed oil, but low in the sophora extracts and Ginko net sarcocarp. In the case of neem products treatment indicated 52 percent yield more than control.

  • A phosphate-solubilizing bacterial strain isolated from Hippophae rhamnoides rhizosphere was identified as Rahnella sp. based on its phenotypic features and 16S rRNA gene sequence. The bacterial strain showed the growth characteristics of a cold-adapted psychrotroph, with the multiple plant growth-promoting traits of inorganic and organic phosphate solubilization, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate-deaminase activity, ammonia generation, and siderophore production. The strain also produced indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-acetaldehyde, indole-3-acetamide, indole-3-acetonitrile, indole-3-lactic acid, and indole-3-pyruvic acid in tryptophan-supplemented nutrient broth. Gluconic, citric and isocitric acids were the major organic acids detected during tricalcium phosphate solubilization. A rifampicin-resistant mutant of the strain exhibited high rhizosphere competence without disturbance to the resident microbial populations in pea rhizosphere. Seed bacterization with a charcoal-based inoculum significantly increased growth in barley, chickpea, pea, and maize under the controlled environment. Microplot testing of the inoculum at two different locations in pea also showed significant increase in growth and yield. The attributes of cold-tolerance, high rhizosphere competence, and broad-spectrum plant growth-promoting activity exhibited the potential of Rahnella sp. BIHB 783 for increasing agriculture productivity.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the presence of biologically active substances such as phenolic acids, fatty acids and organic acids in the medical plants like Kalopanax pictum and Acanthopanacis cortex. Alcohol extracts of K. pictum and A. cortex showed complete inhibition of lettuce seed germination, indicating that these plants contained the biologically active substances. Eleven phenolic acids including protocatechuic acid were identified from K. pictum and A. cortex by GLC, and the contents of total phenolic acid were 1.7917mg/g in K. pictum, and 0.9567mg/g in A. cortex. Polyphenols such as neochlorogenic acid, chi orogenic acid, scopoletin, rutin and kaempferolglycoside which were not detected by GLC were anayzed by HPLC, and among phenolic acids indentified chi orogenic acid seemed to be the major acid in both K. pictum and A. cortex presented in amount of 23.7 and 13.0ppm, respectively. K. pictum contained 5.26mg/g of fatty acids and 27.69mg/g of organic acids, and A. cortex possessed 3.22mg/g of fatty acids and 9.80mg/g of organic acids, linoleic and oxalic acid appeared to be the major fatty and organic acids, representing more than 50% of total fatty acids and 80% of total organic acids.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum conditions for efficient methane production through anaerobic digestion of pig waste slurry. The examined parameters were organic matter content of the pig slurry, the ratio of seed sludge to pig slurry, and stirring intensity of the digestion reactor. The effects of types of slurry produced from different purpose-based pigs fed with different feeds were also tested. The methane concentration in the produced biogas was 45% when the ratio of seed sludge to pig slurry was 50% and total solid (TS) concentration was 1%, and it increased in proportional to TS concentration increases from 3 to 7%. At 3 and 5% of TS concentration, increasing mixing velocity from 80 to 160 rpm resulted in higher biogas production amount. However, mixing amount of seed sludge did not cause any significant effect on biogas production. Overall, the most efficient biogas production was achieved at 3-5% TS concentration in combination with 50% seed sludge inoculation and mixing velocity at 120 rpm. Among pig slurry types, gestating sow waste slurry showed the highest biogas production probably due to higher the degradation rate than other types of pig waste slurry being affected by the feeds components.

  • Antioxidant compound(s) were identified from the ethanol extract of wild grape (Vitis coignetiea) seed. Organic solvent fractions of n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol were obtained from the ethanol extract of wild grape seed, among which ethyl acetate fraction showed the strongest reducing power. Ethyl acetate fraction was further purified through ODS column chromatography and HPLC, and isolated antioxidative active compound was identified through $^1H-NMR$ as (+)-catechin (52.7 g/100 g). (+)-Catechin and ethyl acetate fraction both showed approximately 80% scavenging effect. These results indicated (+)-catechin in the ethyl acetate fraction synergetically interacts with unknown antioxidative compound(s).

  • Poly-Si TFT(Thin Film Transistor) technology are reviewed and discussed. Poly-Si TFTs fabricated on glass using low-temperature process were studied extensively for the application to LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) as well as to OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diode) Display. Currently, one of the application targets of the poly-Si TFT is emphasized on the highly functional SOG(System on Glass). Improvement of device characteristics such as an enhancement of carrier mobility has been studied intensively by enlarging the grain size. Reduction of the voltage and shrinkage of the device size are the trend of AM FPD(Active Matrix Flat Panel Display) as well as of Si LSI, which will arise a peculiar issue of uniformity for the device performance. Some approaches such as nucleation control of the grain seed or lateral grain growth have been tried, so far.
