Membrane distillation (MD), which can utilize low-grade thermal energy, has been extensively studied for desalination. By incorporating solar thermal energy, the solar membrane distillation desalination system (SMDDS) is a potential technology for resolving the energy and water resource problems. Small-scale SMDDS (s-SMDDS) is an attractive and viable option for the production of fresh water for small communities in remote arid areas. The minimum-cost design and operation of s-SMDDS are determined by a systematic method, which involves a pseudo steady state approach for equipment sizing and the dynamic optimization using overall system mathematical models. The s-SMDDS employing three MD configurations, including the air gap (AGMD), direct contact (DCMD) and vacuum (VMD) types, are optimized. The membrane area of each system is $11.5m^2$. The AGMD system operated for 500 kg/day water production rate gives the lowest unit cost of $5.92/m^3$. The performance ratio and recovery ratio are 0.85 and 4.07%, respectively. For the commercial membrane employed in this study, the increase of membrane mass transfer coefficient up to two times is beneficial for cost reduction and the reduction of membrane heat transfer coefficient only affects the cost of the DCMD system.
Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (CPESs) integrate cyber and hardware components to ensure a reliable and safe physical power production and supply. Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) add uncertainty to energy demand that can be dealt with flexible operation (e.g., load-following) of CPES; at the same time, scenarios that could result in severe consequences due to both component stochastic failures and aging of the cyber system of CPES (commonly overlooked) must be accounted for Operation & Maintenance (O&M) planning. In this paper, we make use of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to search for the optimal O&M strategy that, not only considers the actual system hardware components health conditions and their Remaining Useful Life (RUL), but also the possible accident scenarios caused by the failures and the aging of the hardware and the cyber components, respectively. The novelty of the work lies in embedding the cyber aging model into the CPES model of production planning and failure process; this model is used to help the RL agent, trained with Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and Imitation Learning (IL), finding the proper rejuvenation timing for the cyber system accounting for the uncertainty of the cyber system aging process. An application is provided, with regards to the Advanced Lead-cooled Fast Reactor European Demonstrator (ALFRED).
An unstructured mathematical model is presented for lactic acid fermentation based on the energy balance. The proposed model reflects the energy metabolic state and then predicts the cell growth, lactic acid production, and glucose consumption rates by relating the above rates with the energy metabolic rate. Fermentation experiments were conducted under various initial lactic acid concentrations of 0, 30, 50, 70, and 90 g/l. Also, a genetic algorithm was used for further optimization of the model parameters and included the operations of coding, initialization, hybridization, mutation, decoding, fitness calculation, selection, and reproduction exerted on individuals (or chromosomes) in a population. The simulation results showed a good fit between the model prediction and the experimental data. The genetic algorithm proved to be useful for model parameter optimization, suggesting wider applications in the field of biological engineering.
Robust parameter design is an off-line production technique for reducing variation and improving the quality of products and processes by using product arrays. However, the use of the product arrays usually requires a large number of runs. To overcome the drawback of the product array, the combined array can be used. Also optimizing multiple responses is increasingly important in industry. Using simultaneous optimization measures, we can deal with the multiple response case. In this paper we compare the simultaneous optimization using the Taguchi's product array with using the combined array. And models possible to set on combined arrays are also investigated and compared with the cases of product arrays.
This paper introduces Primetals Technologies' Through-Process Optimization (TPO) Services and Through-Process Quality Control (TPQC) System, which integrate domain knowledge, software, and automation expertise to assist steel producers in achieving operational excellence. TPQC collects high-resolution process and product data from the entire production route, providing visualizations and facilitating quality assurance. It also enables the application of artificial intelligence techniques to optimize processes, accelerate steel grade development, and enhance product quality. The main objective of TPO is to grow and digitize operational know-how, increase profitability, and better meet customer needs. The paper describes the contribution of these systems to achieving operational excellence, with a focus on quality assurance. Transparent and traceable production data is used for manual and automatic quality evaluation, resulting in product quality status and guiding the product disposition process. Deviation management is supported by rule-based and AI-based assistants, along with monitoring, alarming, and reporting functions ensuring early recognition of deviations. Embedded root cause proposals and their corrective and compensatory actions facilitate decision support to maintain product quality. Quality indicators and predictive quality models further enhance the efficiency of the quality assurance process. Utilizing the quality assurance software package, TPQC acts as a "one-truth" platform for product quality key players.
In order to reduce trial-and-errors in the die design and production, CAE systems for analysis of stamping tools have been introduced at the initial design stage recently. For optimal design, the CAE engineers may need to correct the meshes generated by automatic mesh generation programs. However, they may need help of CAD engineers as they are usually not skilled in manipulation of CAD systems. In order to get around these problems, automatic shell mesh modification method is proposed, which utilizes existing CAD/CAE package (in this study, I-DEAS) without user interaction. The developed method and optimization techniques are applied to a stamping die rounding optimization problem. The optimization results show that the manpower and the time required at virtual tryout can be reduced by using the developed systems.
Network optimization is being increasingly important and fundamental issue in the fields such as engineering, computer science, operations research, transportation, telecommunication, decision support systems, manufacturing, and airline scheduling. Networks provide a useful way to modeling real world problems and are extensively used in practice. Many real world applications impose on more complex issues, such as, complex structure, complex constraints, and multiple objects to be handled simultaneously and make the problem intractable to the traditional approaches. Recent advances in evolutionary computation have made it possible to solve such practical network optimization problems. The invited talk introduces a thorough treatment of evolutionary approaches, i.e., hybrid genetic algorithms approach to network optimization problems, such as, fixed charge transportation problem, minimum cost and maximum flow problem, minimum spanning tree problem, multiple project scheduling problems, scheduling problem in FMS.
Optimal media and cultural conditions for the production of prodigiosin-like pigment were established using Serratia sp. KH-95. Glucose and phosphate(K2PO4) stimulated the cell growth, but inhibited the production of pigment at concentration levels of above 10 g/L and 2.0 g/L, respectively. Addition of soy been oil or rice oil to the production medium accelerated cell growth up to more than 2-3 times, but the production of prodigiosin increased about 15-20% in spite of the good cell growth. The effect of pH on the production of pigment was investigated in a 5 liter-bioreactor. When the pH of culture broth was maintained below 8.0, most of pigment was attached to the surface of cells. When the pH of culture broth was above 8.5, however, about 70% of total pigment was suspended in the supernatant of the broth. The cell growth and production of pigment were inhibited at dissolved oxygen concentration of below 10% of air-saturation.
The cyclic production lines have the first machines starved and the last machine blocked due to the lack or the excess of empty pallets in the feedback buffer. A workpiece in the cyclic production lines is transported on a pallet, and the total sum of pallets in the system does not changed during the system operation time. Therefore, the production rate of the cyclic production lines are dependent on the total number of pallets in the system. In this paper, we suggest the performance analysis method for the cyclic production lines with inspection machines and the optimal total number of pallets in the system that maximizes the production rate of the system. Finally, we validate the suggested methods by simulations.
The optimization of experimental parameters, such as catalyst type, catalyst concentration, molar ratio of alcohol to oil and reaction temperature, on the transesterification for the production of rapeseed methyl ester has been studied. The Taguchi approach (Taguchi method) was adopted as the experimental design methodology, which was adequate for understanding the effects of the control parameters and to optimize the experimental conditions from a limited number of experiments. The optimal experimental conditions obtained from this study were potassium hydroxide as the catalyst, at a concentration of 1.5 wt %, and a reaction temperature of $60^{\circ}C$. According to Taguchi method, the catalyst concentration played the most important role in the yield of rapeseed methyl ester. Finally, the yield of rapeseed methyl ester was improved to 96.7% with the by optimal conditions of the control parameters which were obtained by Taguchi method.
