  • In the conventional star coupler, a certain amount of loss should be expected because lateral diffraction is used for the power distribution. In this paper, we propose a new design of a low loss star coupler which employs UV-written tapered waveguides and an AWG based on the low loss star couplers, and investigate their various characteristics. The loss of the UV-written star coupler is lower than that of the conventional star coupler, and the AWG device based on the UV-written star couplers shows low loss characteristics.

  • In this paper, the optimal position of optical phase conjugator(OPC) excellently compensating distorted WDM channels with initial frequency chirp due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation(SPM) is numerically investigated. Highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) is used as a nonlinear medium of OPC in order to widely compensate WDM signal band. It is confirmed that if the OPC position was shifted from mid-way of total transmission length dependence on the initial frequency chirp as well as modulation format and fiber dispersion coefficient, it is possible to cancel the performance degradation owing to the initial frequency chirp. Using proposed configuration, it is possible to remove all in-line dispersion compensator, reducing span losses and system costs in the long-haul broadband WDM systems.

  • Broadband metal-dielectric-metal terahertz filters composed of complementary rings are designed and demonstrated. Four samples with different parameters were fabricated. Results measured using THz time-domain spectroscopy system show excellent agreement with simulations. Compared with the broadband filters reported before, the complementary ring structure in our design is insensitive to any polarization at normal incidence due to symmetry of the ring. Furthermore, the influence of structure parameters (such as period, radius, slot width, thickness and incidence angles) on the transmission characteristics has been investigated theoretically. The encouraging results afforded by designing of the filters could find applications in broadband sensors, terahertz communication systems, and other emerging terahertz technologies.

  • Recently, coherent control of exciton populations has been demonstrated through terahertz, reflection, and four-wave-mixing experiments. However, the most direct probe of exciton population control is the absorption, which has been lacking in previous studies. In this report, we probe the time evolution of exciton population directly through a transmission experiment. In particular, using upconversion technique with both narrow (spectrally broad) and long (spectrally narrow) pulses, we can obtain both the temporal and the spectral information. The main thrust of our report is that when phase controlled, the second pulse can be either greatly enhanced or completely destroyed by gaining energy from exciton (thus destroying the exciton population) or giving all of its energy to the system (thus greatly increasing the exciton population), respectively. • ZnO:Al transparent conductive films were deposited on glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering technique and annealed by rapid thermal annealing system. The influence of annealing time on the structural, electrical, and optical properties of ZnO:Al thin films was investigated by atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Hall method and optical transmission spectroscopy. As the annealing time increases from 0 to 5 min, the crystallinity is improved, the root main square surface roughness is decreased and the sheet resistance is decreased. The lowest sheet resistance of ZnO:Al thin film is 90 ohm/sq. The reduction of sheet resistance is caused by increasing carrier concentration due to substituent Al ion. All films are transparent up to 80% in the visible wavelength range and the adsorption edge is a blue-shift due to Burstein-Moss effect with increasing annealing time.

  • The influences of background and environmental noise on coincidence detection are investigated with entangled photons produced by parametric down-conversion process. When the down-converted photons are mixed with thermal light, the coincidence rate did not vary with increasing noise level because the accidental coincidences are discriminated at the short resolving time window. The entangled photon source and the coincidence technique can effectively be used for a noise-free communication channel in the new field of quantum information transmission and processing. ssing.

  • We have investigated spectral properties of the periodic arrays of aluminum rods and holes on papers using the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The size of a rod(hole) is $600{\mu}m{\times}100{\mu}m$ and the spacing is $300{\mu}m$. The samples were fabricated by a femtosecond laser micromachining system. The periodic arrays of aluminum rods exhibit high reflection around 0.25 THz when the polarization of the THz pulse is parallel to the long axis of the rod, whereas the periodic arrays of holes exhibit high transmission around 0.25 THz when the polarization of the THz pulse is perpendicular to the long axis of the hole.

  • A dispersion map was proposed to improve the compensation effect of a distorted WDM (wavelength division multiplexed) channel in a dispersion-managed link coupled with optical phase conjugation. The dispersion map is an origin-symmetric structure around the optical phase conjugator in the middle of the transmission path. In addition, the dispersion map has a form in which a constant dispersion accumulation pattern is repeated regularly. Through simulation, we confirmed that the application of the origin-symmetric dispersion map with a repetitively shaped configuration was more effective in compensating for the distorted WDM channel than in the dispersion-managed link with a conventional dispersion map. In addition, we confirmed that the compensation effect could be increased when the cumulative dispersion distribution of the origin-symmetric distribution map had a positive value in the first half section and a negative value in the second half section. Further, we observed that as the number of repeated dispersion accumulation patterns increased, the residual dispersion per span should also be increased.

  • As the demand for broadband multimedia including the Internet explosively increases, the advancement of the subscriber network is becoming the biggest issue in the telecommunication industry due to the surge of data traffic caused by the emergence of new services such as smart phone, IPTV, VoIP, VOD and cloud services. In this paper, we have developed WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing)-PON(passive optical network) based on the 1-Gigabit Reach Externder (RE) technique to reduce optical core. Particularly, in order to strengthen the market competitiveness, we considered low cost, miniaturization, integration technique, and low power of optical parts. In addition, we have developed a batch system by integrating all techniques for reliability, remote management through the development of transmission distance extension and development of capacity increase of optical line by using RE technology in existing PON network. Based on system interworking with existing commercial 1G PON devices, it can be worthy of achievement of wide nationalization and optical core reduction by using this developed system. Based on these results, we are studying development of 10G PON technology.

  • This paper deals with the design and development of a lens system capable of imaging an infrared image of $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$ wavelength bands with a focal length of 24mm and good atmospheric transmission characteristics. The design used CodeV, a commercial design program, and the optimization is carried out with weighting to eliminate chromatic aberration, spherical aberration and distortion. The designed lens system consists of two lenses consisting of Si and Ge. Each lens has an aspherical surface on one side. And this optical system has the resolution of the characteristics that the MTF value is 0.40 at the line width of 29lp/mm and the MTF value is 0.25 at the line width of 20lp/mm. This optical system is considered to have the capability to be applied to the thermal imaging camera for MWIR using the $206{\times}156$ array infrared detector of $25{\mu}m$ pixels and the $320{\times}240$ array infrared detector of $17{\mu}m$ pixels.
