  • Light induced degradation is one of the major research challenges of hydrogenated amorphous silicon related thin film silicon solar cells. Amorphous silicon shows creation of metastable defect states, originating from elevated concentration of dangling bonds during light exposure. The metastable defect states work as recombination centers, and mostly affects quality of intrinsic layer in solar cells. In this paper we present results of light induced degradation in thin film silicon solar cells and discussion on physical origin, mechanism and practical solutions of light induced degradation in thin film silicon solar cells. In-situ light-soaking IV measurement techniques are presented. We also present thin film silicon material with silicon nano-quantum dots embedded within amorphous matrix, which shows superior stability during light-soaking. Our results suggest that solar cell using silicon nano-quantum dots in abosrber layer shows superior stability under light soaking, compared to the conventional amorphous silicon solar cell.

  • An all-optical encryption system built on the basis of electrical logic circuit design principles is proposed, using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) exclusive or (XOR) logic gates. Numerical techniques (steady-state and dynamic) were employed in a sequential manner to optimize the system parameters, speeding up the overall design process. The results from both numerical and experimental testbeds show that the encoding/decoding of the optical signal can be achieved at a 10 Gbps data rate with a conventional SOA cascade without serious degradation in the data quality.

  • This paper presents the reliability of planar InP/InGaAs avalanche photodiodes (APD's) with recess etching, which is very crucial for the commercial 10-Gb/s optical receiver application. A versatile design for the planar InP/InGaAs APD's and bias-temperature tests to evaluate long-term reliability at temperature from 200 to $250^{\circ}C$. The reliability is examined by accelerated life tests by monitoring dark current and breakdown voltage. The lifetime of the APD's is estimated by a degradation activation energy. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the planar InP/InGaAs APD's with recess etching shows the sufficient reliability for practical 10-Gb/s optical receivers.

  • Optical properties of $TiO_2/M/Ag/M/TiO_2$ films have been changed with the diffusion barrier metal M. Optimum opticla properties of $TiO_2/M/Ag/M/TiO_2$ as the transparent heat mirror film, could be obtained with Ti among diffusion barrier metals of Ti, Cu, Zr and Al. $TiO_2/M/Ag/M/TiO_2$ film, which was fabricated by sputtering of 18 nm-thick $TiO_2$ and Ag, and 4nm-thick Ti, showed maximum transimittance of 89% at visible wavelength and infrared reflectance of 97% at wavelength of 3000 nm. Optical properties of this film was not degraded by Xenon-sunshine weather test for 240 hours. For specimens with barrier layers of Cu, Zr, and Al, degradation of optical properties by weather test was increased in a sequence of films with Cu, Zr, and Al barrier layers.

  • A high reflectance mirror, which has very low absorption and scattering loss, was coated onto a crystalline substrate by ion beam sputtering and then annealed at $450^{\circ}C$. We carefully selected the mirror coating material, and designed the high reflectance mirror, in order to avoid UV degradation which comes from the He-Ne plasma. We measured the surface roughness of the Zerodur substrate using phase shift interferometry and atomic force microscopy, and compared it with the TIS scattering of the mirror. The cavity ring-down method was used to measure the absorption of the mirror, and the thin film structure was correlated to its results. We also compared the optical properties of coated mirrors before and after annealing.

  • We installed windscreen at the BOAO 1.8m telescope dome, in order to reduce the degradation of image Quality under strong wind larger than 8m/sec. The windscreen was designed on the basis of that installed at the MSSSO 2.3m telescope dome in Australia. We developed control system (remote control and user program) of the windscreen, being able to operate the windscreen at observation room. We tested the performance of the windscreen under strong wind of 6-15m/see. Tracking error of the telescope, especially in altitude-axis, was greatly decreased when the windscreen was used. Standard deviation of the error was estimated to be less than 0.3arcsec, which has little effect on image quality.

  • Degradation of the optical communication system due to the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect in the optical fiber is measured, and its suppression is demonstrated. In the externally modulated 2.5 Gb/s transmission experiment, bit error rate is increased due to the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect when the signal power (linewidth 3 MHz) incident into the dispersion shifted fiber is larger than 10 dBm. SBS effect is suppressed completely, up to 15 dBm of transmission power, by broadening the source linewidth to 200 MHz.

  • In this letter, we will evaluate the performance degradation of a 40 km high-speed (40 Gb/s) optical system, induced by optical fiber variations of the chromatic dispersion induced by temperature changes. The chromatic dispersion temperature sensitivity will be estimated based on the signal quality parameters.

  • Laser projector has many advantages of high brightness, high resolution and small size, but the huge drawback of image degradation called speckle which generated by coherence of laser and roughness of surface interrupts their general use. There are many methods to reduce speckle pattern, but they need effective optical systems to realize display to the far field with huge volume. We designed speckle reduction element by using microlens with controlled curvature to reduce spatial coherence. Vibration element was also applied to reduce temporal coherence which considered response time of eye. Designed element was fabricated by simple reflow method and imprinting method. From the results, the fabricated element performed 48.33% of speckle reduction efficiency and 41.29% of optical efficiency with a single doublet lens.

  • The optoelectronic display units such as TFT-LCD or OLED require many thin optical plastic films and their mass manufacturing processes employ CO2 laser cutting of those thin films in a large quantity. However, laser film cutting could generate fume particles through melt shearing, vaporization, and chemical degradation and those particles could be of great concern for film surface contamination. In order to appreciate the fume particle dispersion behaviors in laser film cutting, this study relies on random particle simulations by probabilistic distributions of particle size, ejection velocity and angles coupled with Basset-Boussinesq-Oseen model of particle trajectory in low Reynolds number flows. Here, up to one million particles of random sampling have been tested to effectively show fume particles dispersed on the film surface. The computational results could show that particular range of fume particle size could easily disperse into the pixel region of processed optical films.
