  • This study aims to examine the efficacy of online lectures conducted by most universities in 2020 in response to the Covid-19 crisis. Furthermore, this study analyzes students' opinions regarding online lectures, thereby assessing the possible direction that future online lectures could take. This study's results indicate that online lectures can have a positive effect on learners' reading comprehension. Also, student satisfaction with online lectures was found to be quite high. Among the reasons students cited for favoring the online format were: (1) the fun presentation of class information; (2) the diversity of subjects covered; and (3) the ease of using the Internet. Among the improvements made for enhancing online lectures were technical enhancements (such as fixing attendance check authentication errors) and stabilizing the playback of lecture videos. By way of concluding, this study claims that professors who are familiar with giving lectures in person should come to recognize that online lectures are not simply another option, but are essential for the future. As such, the academic community must focus on developing online content as a way to further higher education's development in meeting the academic demands of both the present and the future.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the process of constructing pre-service teachers' scientific knowledge information through collective intelligence. We selected the 'Appropriate Technology' (A.T.) as the subject for formation of scientific knowledge. Twenty nine pre-service teachers of the course 'Scientific Thinking and Writing in Science Education' were allowed to freely post information whenever they wanted. They presented their full opinions, interacted with each other, and assessed the other' information on the website for a month. The way of posting was as follows. After one pre-service teacher had written the information about A.T. on the website, the other assessed the text and added or modified the writing. This process continued. We analyzed every writing they posted and questionnaire which contained the reason why they modified the text. The result was as follows. Pre-service teachers formed collective intelligence through four stages. First, pre-service teachers started to find the information related to the subject and they just added the information behind the other's writing. In the second stage, information was added, too. But the difference was that the information they selected carried values for having certain views. Third, they organized their writings with logical and critical thinking. Finally, they revised their overall writing. The results showed that students could develop their critical thinking and they could learn the way of communication from the process of collective intelligence. We found the forming process of knowledge by collective intelligence, and explored the various involving patterns and thinking activities in the process. Based on this research, we expect the improvement of students' logical and critical thinking through the various classes using collective intelligence.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a teaching-learning plan applicable to high school technology·home economics and home science classes in order to prevent adolescents' dating violence which is one of the serious social problems we are facing lately. This research has following three steps: 1. Analyzing contents and selecting content elements, 2. Developing teaching-learning materials, and 3. Performing a pilot test and making corrections. In the first step, this author analyzes how the contents associated with dating violence are presented in the 2015 curriculum of technology·home economics and the textbooks and reviews related literatures to select content elements necessary to prevent dating violence for those going through adolescence. Based on that, in the second step, this researcher develops a teaching-learning plan for six lessons and then makes it verified by two experienced teachers of home economics. In the last step, the teaching-learning plan for six sessions developed is implemented to two high school classes, and then, based on the results of examining the opinions of the teachers implementing the plan and students about the class, this researcher modifies and complements the parts of the plan showing low applicability to the field and develops the final dating violence prevention teaching-learning plan. In order to prevent adolescents' dating violence, it is necessary to create a social environment safe from violence and provide violence prevention education before they begin to have relationship. This researcher expects that this teaching-learning plan is applied in home economics class and it can contribute to enhancing students' sensitivity about violence and improving their competencies to make wise judgments in problematic situations and cope with them properly.

SUS(System Usability Scale) was used to evaluate the usability of the metaverse platform 'Spatial' in a college class, and the Magnitude estimation technique was used to evaluate the immersion and satisfaction with the class. In addition, a questionnaire survey was used to collect user experience opinions on the use of 'Spatial' as a teaching tool. Looking at the usability evaluation results of the 'Spatial' system, the students evaluated the usability, immersion, and satisfaction quite positively. Looking at the user experience of metaverse platform 'Spatial', it was found that students highly valued Metaverse as an educational tool that can provide a place for many people to gather and communicate even in a non-face-to-face space. Compared to other online platforms, metaverse has advantages in ease of use, interaction, immersion, and interest. In particular, in addition to keyboard, touch, and display, interaction using the five senses such as voice, motion, and gaze was recognized as a great advantage. On the other hand, it was found that high openness, freedom, and interest factors can both promote learning and inhibit learning. Nevertheless, it is judged that the metaverse platform 'Spatial' can be effectively applied in college classes because it enables various interactions between instructor and learner or between learner and learner.

  • In this study, we investigated the argumentations of group and classroom discussions in socioscientific issues (SSI) discussion classes. Twenty-seven high school students participated in the SSI discussion classes on nuclear power generation. We observed and recorded the classes and also conducted semi-structured interviews. For the analyses, we revised a previous framework that was developed to analyze dialogic argumentations in the context of SSI. The analyses of the results indicated that there were more discourse schemes in the classroom discussions than the group discussions which are related to awareness and openness to multiple perspectives, evidence based reasoning, and on-going inquiry and skepticism. And there were few discourse schemes related to moral and ethical sensitivity in the group and classroom discussions. Various grounds, data, and information were presented in the classroom discussions. Students concentrated on carrying their claims and were not able to sympathize with and accept other opinions. Therefore, there were few discourse schemes to reach consensus. In addition, they perceived classroom discussions as competitive and actively rebutted other claims or grounds. The levels of argumentation were also high in the classroom discussions. The group discussions were held in relaxed atmosphere, and they asked the opponents more for clarification or additional information and evidences. However, classroom discussions were held in serious atmosphere, and they actively queried the validity of the claims or grounds. Based on the results, some suggestions to implement SSI discussion classes were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to utilize the Photovoice qualitative research method targeting university students. Through this method, we aimed to understand the perceptions of environmental issues, environmental barriers, and eco-friendly behaviors among university students. By employing the Photovoice methodology, we sought to share the perspectives of university students on eco-friendly behaviors, explore the motivations and manifestations of these behaviors, and reflect on their significance. The ultimate goal was to provide practical suggestions for fostering eco-friendly behaviors through an in-depth examination of the visual narratives and reflections of university students. Under the overarching theme of the environment, participants were given the opportunity to individually select and explore three specific sub-themes: 'My Concept of the Environment,' 'Environmental Barriers in My Life,' and 'My Eco-friendly Behaviors.' Participants engaged in the process of capturing photographs from their daily lives related to each theme, expressing their thoughts and perspectives through the selected images. Subsequently, they shared and discussed their insights, actively listening to the opinions of others in the group. The results of this study revealed several key findings. Firstly, participants assigned meaning to the photographs they selected by directly capturing aspects related to the environment, such as 'waste,' 'discomfort,' 'fine dust=environmental pollution,' and 'indifference.' Secondly, participants attributed meaning to the selected photographs related to environmental barriers, associating them with concepts like 'invisibility,' 'apathy,' 'social stigma,' 'inefficiency,' and 'compulsion.' Lastly, participants ascribed significance to photographs selected in the context of eco-friendly behaviors, with themes like 'recycling,' 'energy conservation,' 'reuse,' and 'reducing the use of disposable items.' Based on these research findings, the confirmation of the V-A-B (Values-Attitudes-Behavior) model was established. It was observed that consumers structure a hierarchical relationship between their personal values, attitudes, and behaviors. The study also identified clear impediments in consumers' daily lives hindering the practice of eco-friendly behaviors. In light of this, the research highlighted the need for strategies to address the discomfort or inconvenience associated with implementing environmentally friendly consumer behaviors. The implications of the study suggest that interventions or solutions are necessary to alleviate barriers and promote a more seamless integration of eco-friendly practices into consumers' daily routines.
