  • Chlorella sorokiniana green microalga offers many environmentally friendly applications, including wastewater treatment, biofertilizers, animal feed, and biofuel production. Different strains of C. sorokiniana have unique properties that may suit one application but not another. There is a need to distinguish between the many available strains of C. sorokiniana to choose the one that best fits the application. Consequently, our research goal was to develop strain-specific simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to differentiate between the different strains. Seventeen markers spanning ten out of the twelve chromosomes of the C. sorokiniana genome were developed and validated on eight different strains from culture collections and our lab, and were then analyzed by fragment analysis. The results demonstrate the potential of these polymorphic markers to detect the genetic differences between the strains of C. sorokiniana, and to serve as useful tools for the intra-species population genetic analysis and conservation genetics studies of C. sorokiniana.

  • The enlargement of an electric power system network gives us much challenges concerning with network operation. In addition to it, the fast aging process of network equipments requires more chance to check and maintenance, and also the increase of heavy loaded facilities and the increase of the fault current in the network need to exchange with the larger facilities in capacity. Due to these reasons, outages trend to increase. Network solution studies for outages are performed mainly for two purposes. The first one is to find the countermeasures when the outage causes a violation of the network reliability criteria. And the second one is to minimize network constraints due to outages. There are so many outages around 400 for only one month. Therefore, in order to do case studies for outage, not only skilled persons are needed, but also many available tools to help properly. Concerning with proper tools, we will introduce a program which we developed to get informations concerned with network sensitivity, and an example to apply that program.

  • Anthers of cultivated Paeonia albiflora were cultured on media supplemented with various combinations of growth regulators. Although the number of anthers with emerged calluses were very few, in the sectioned anthers were found many multinucleate, 2-celled, or multicellular microspores, the one-celled multinucleate microspores being most abundant in number, and the multicellular ones the least. In 2-celled or 3-celled microspores two kinds were observed: one is ordinary one with single nucleus in each cell, and the other is multinucleate one. Majority of the 2-celled microspores was found to be of equational-division irrespective of whether they were multinucleate micropores or ordinary nonmultinucleate ones.

  • In this study we suggested two optimization models to answer a question from an investor standpoint : how many convertible bonds should one convert, and how many keep? One model minimizes certain risk to the minimum required expected return, the other maximizes the expected return subject to the maximum acceptable risk. In comparison with Markowitz portfolio models, which use the variance of return, our models used Conditional Value-at-Risk(CVaR) for risk measurement. As a coherent measurement, CVaR overcomes the shortcomings of Value-at-Risk(VaR). But there are still difficulties in solving CVaR including optimization models. For this reason, we adopted Rockafellar and Uryasev's[18, 19] approach. Then we could approximate the models as linear programming problems with scenarios. We also suggested to extend the models with credit risk, and applied examples of our models to Hynix 207CB, a convertible bond issued by the global semiconductor company Hynix.

  • In recent, various shapes of pattern in micron or nano scale are adapted in many applications due to their good mechanical or optical properties. Light guide panel (LGP) of the LCD is one of important applications for micro pattern and micro prism shape is one of the typical patterns. The size of the surface patterns in most applications is decreasing to the order of micron or even under micron. On the other hand, the area to be patterned keeps enlarging. These two trends in patterned products require tooling micro patterns on large surface, which has still many technical problems to be solved mainly due to pattern size and the tooling area. In this study, we fabricated prism shape of patterns using diamond cutting tool on some metal core and plastic core like PMMA. Some cutting conditions were investigated including cutting force, cutting depth and speed for different core materials.

  • One of the critical issues in wireless sensor network is the design of a proper routing protocol. One possible approach is utilizing a virtual infrastructure, which is a subset of sensors to connect all the sensors in the network. Among the many virtual infrastructures, the connected dominating set is widely used. Since a small connected dominating set can help to decrease the protocol overhead and energy consumption, it is preferable to find a small sized connected dominating set. Although many algorithms have been suggested to construct a minimum connected dominating set, there have been few exact approaches. In this paper, we suggest an improved optimal algorithm for the minimum connected dominating set problem, and extensive computational results showed that our algorithm outperformed the previous exact algorithms. Also, we suggest a new heuristic algorithm to find the connected dominating set and computational results show that our algorithm is capable of finding good quality solutions quite fast.

  • Over twenty-five years ago, Professor Klein and Rubin presented the linear expenditure system. That system was first estimated by Stone. Subsequently many investigators have estimated that system. In this paper, many points of the error structure shown by Pollak and Wales are referred to. Barten presented an estimation theorem on a singular covariance matrix. In order to estimate parameters, we place an emphasis on the maximum likihood method which we believe to be most appropriate. As we have one linear restriction on parameters to be estimated, we maximized the associated likelihood function subject to that linear restriction through the well-known lagrange multiplier method. This paper is organized in the following fashion : (1) a brief description on classical consumer theory, (2) a linear expenditure system and its constraint, (3) dyanmic specification and stochastic specification, (4) estimation method, and (5) conclusion.

  • There are many difficulties in automatic polishing for die & mold surfaces. Even though the process has been studied in the past 15 years, it has not been achieved yet, but by the process of actual hand work of well-skilled workers. A new magentic assisted polishing process, which is one of the potential method for automation of surface finishing has been studied in the past 10 years by colleagues. The process has many merits, but on the other hand also has demerits, one being low efficiency of gridability by comparision with grinding wheel polish. Therefore, some attempts were tried to improve the grindability by adopting electropolishing, ultra-high speed milling, 5-axis controlled machine etc... most recently by collegues. This study also aims to improve the efficiency of polishing by introducing the easily-polished shape surface milling method equalizing the tool feed per tooth to the pick feed. This milling method was experimentally confirmed to have sufficient grindability to polish milled surface (with 10 .mu. mRmax surface roughness) into mirror surface (with 0.4 .mu. mRmax surface roughness).

  • Many commercial high speed and lightly loaded rotating machineries incorporate floating ring bearings (FRBs) owing to their low cost and reduced power losses. Many researchers have developed various analytical models to predict the performance and the stability of those rotor-bearing systems with FRBs. However, most of the models failed to predict stability of the rotor-bearing systems with FRBs. FRBs comprise two fluid films in series and the ratio of floating ring speed to journal speed reflects the equilibrium state of the two fluid films. Therefore the speed ratio is one of the main concerns in the analysis of FRBs. This paper provides the experimental results of the speed ratio which enables one to verify of the analysis model for FRBs.

  • Safety is the most important factor in skyscrapers. The fact that skyscrapers can contain many facilities and people is one of its many advantages. However external pressure such as earthquakes or wind might make accidents that lead to casualties. Because of its large size, small accidents still make big scale of damage. In this paper, we tried to find out what kind of factors affected the movement of skyscrapers using the 'One Dimentional Forced Damped Oscillation Interpretation Software'. Then we researched how to minimize the damage caused by it and the way to correspond to it.
