  • Wished to examine closely effect that Atopy cream-Jawoongo ointment (A-J) used to atopy dermatitis disease patient get in atopy eruption control experimentally. In this research A-J ointment as treatment result to a NC/Nga mouse by BMAC ointment, clinical skin severity score decreased remarkably than control group. Thus, NC/Nga mice suffered from dermatitis very similar to human AD with IgE hyperproduction. Specially, result that measure IgE and IgG1 level in serum decreased remarkably than control group.

Transdermal Permeation of Riboflavin in Ointment Bases Using Gums & Enhancers (Gum류의 연고제제와 흡수촉진제가 Riboflavin의 경피흡수에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated characters of transdermal therapeutic system(TTS) and the skin permeability of that with applying drug delivery system(DDS). Natural gums were selected as material of TTS. The permeation of natural gums ointment containing drug in rat skin using diffusion cell model. Permeation properties of materials were investigated for water soluble drug such as riboflavin in vitro. We used glycerin, PEG 600 and oleic acid as enhancers. Since dermis has more hydration than the stratum corneum, skin permeation rate at steady state was highly influenced when glycerin was used in riboflavin. The permeation rate of content enhancer and drug was found to be faster than that of content riboflavin only. These results showed that skin permeation rate of drug across the composite was mainly dependent on the property of ointment base and drug. All the gum ointment tested showed good safety. Proper selection of the materials which resemble and enhance properties of the delivering drug was found to be important in controlling the skin permeation rate.

  • Transdermal therapeutic system(TTS) is often used as the method of drug dosage into the epidermic skin. Natural polymer were selected as ointment material of TTS. We investigated the permeation of natural polymer ointment containing drug in rat skin using horizontal membrane cell model. Permeation properties of materials were investigated for water-soluble drug such as Nicotinic acid N-oxide in vitro. These results showed that skin permeation rate of drug across the composite was mainly dependent on the property of ointment base and drug. Proper selection of the polymeric materials which resemble and enhance properties of the delivering drug was found to be important in controlling the skin permeation rate. This result suggests a possible use of natural polymer ointment base as TTS of antihyperlipoproteinemic agent.

Topical Formulations of Water-Soluble Chitin as a Wound Healing Assistant -Evaluation on Open Wounds Using a Rabbit Ear Model-

  • Water-soluble chitin (WSC) was prepared by carefully deacetylating chitins to about $50\%$ of N-acetyl content. Topical formulations based on WSC were prepared and their effects on wound healing were evaluated on a rabbit ear model. Full-thickness, open skin wounds were made on the ears of rabbits and WSC ointments were embedded in the open wounds. The application of WSC ointments significantly accelerated wound healing and wound contraction. The areas of epithelial-ization and granulation tissues in WSC ointment group are remarkably larger than those in control group (no treatment) and in placebo group (treated with ointment-base materials). A large number of grown granulation tissues including dense fibroblast deposition were observed under the thickened epithelium of the wound treated with WSC ointments. The number of inflammatory cells in WSC ointment group was significantly decreased compared with those in control and placebo groups, indicating that WSC would give low stimuli to wounds and prevent excessive scar formation. Neovascularization was the most prominent in WSC ointment group. Wound contraction in WSC ointment group was much larger than those in control and placebo groups. Overall results demonstrate that the topical formulation based on WSC is considered to become an excellent dressing as a wound healing assistant.

  • Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a mitogen which activate the proliferation of basal cells in skin, which implicate the wound healing in severe skin damage such as burn. To carry out the preclinical test for the pharmacological action of EGF, EGF in transdermal delivery system must be stable. Since EGF is a protein susceptible to proteolysis and unstable in aqueous solution, in vitro stabilization of EGF is prerequisite for the formulation. In this study, effect of additives on the stability of EGF is investigated in vitro. The stability of EGF in aqueous solution was enhanced with the various water-soluble polysaccharides such as HPMC, sorbitol, mannitol and dextrin. EGF was successfully extracted from the ointment with 5% HPMC solution, and EGF in aqueous solution and ointment was also successfully stabilized with 5% HPMC. The ointments prepared with different amount of EGF were applied on the damaged dorsal skin of rats for the determination of optimal concentration of EGF. The ointment with EGF $(10\;{\mu}g/g)$ showed good wound healing action on the damaged skin of rats.

  • The silver nanocrystalline is widely used for biological field because of its biocompatibility and anti-microbial effect. The objective of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of the silver nanocrystalline ointment on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) capsulitis. Total 39 patients were included in this study and all patients were received single topical application of the silver nanocrystalline ointment (group A, n=30) or placebo ointment (group B, n=19). Measured variables were maximum mouth opening (MMO), visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, and VAS for function. In results, we could not assess any therapeutic efficacy of single application in the chronic TMJ capsulitis (p>0.05). However, the single application of silver nanocrystalline ointment showed significant improvement in MMO and VAS for pain compared to placebo effect in the acute TMJ capsulitis (p<0.05). We could not find any complications related to ointment application in both groups. In conclusion, the single application of silver nanocrystalline ointment was effective in improving patient's symptom in acute TMJ capsulitis without any noticing complications.

  • According to previous paper, the hardness of semi-solid as ointments and suppositories causes the tough or skin, the pain and connected with absorption, the state of spread or the efficiency of drug. When the hardening agent or the softening agent is added to ointment whid, is registered on the pharmacopeia of the republic of Korea, the experimertal data by apparent logarithmic hardness are shown is Table 1. The results are as the folloring. 1) In case of the softening agent which is added to ointment base, each has shown two different equation with differnented slope as $K_1$ and $K_2$ value determined (Fig. 1,2). 2) When the hardening agent is added to same ointment base, these studies indicated that there is a direct correlation between $K_1$ and $K_2$. However, in case of softening agent $K_1$ and $K_1$ are not correlated as indicated in Fig. $3{\sim}8$. 3) On condition of same ointment base, the critical poit is proportional to $K_1$ 4) The second effect is at least $3{\sim}17$ times more. sensitive than the first effect or in average 8.3 times more sensitive, Therefore, the results presented in this paper. Suggest that, when the drug is added to a certain ointment base, it should be added within this first effect before the critical point is reached.

  • The purpose of this study is to expand the prescription usage from internal treatment to external treatment by applying the compatibilities of herbal ingredient for ointment massage therapy. For this, specific cases of usage were investigated in Donguibogam, which is now inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, has been not only one of the classics of Korean medical asphere, but has compiled all the contents of the Oriental medical traditions including ointment massage therapy that was completed through different Chinese dynasties, such as Song (宋), Jin(金) and Won(元) by the 17th century. Research results of this study is : 1. Ointment Massage Therapy was used to treat the symptoms of diseases such as ACHI-mun(dental range : 牙齒門), PI-mun(dermal range : 皮門), JECHANG-mun (sore range : 諸瘡門), SO A-mun(pediatrics range : 小兒門). 2. Out of all the manipulations, it is a scrubbing manipulation that used most. 3. Out of all the formulations of ointment massage therapy, it is powder types and ointment types that most representative formulation.

Effect of Bee Venom Ointment Treatment for Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy : A Case Series (항암화학요법에 의한 말초신경병증의 봉독크림 치료 : 연속증례)

  • Objective : This is a case series reporting degree of response to bee venom ointment as a symptom-control therapy for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Methods : Four consecutive patients with CIPN were referred to the East-West Cancer Center from October 7th, 2013, to November 9th, 2013. Patients with CIPN were treated with bee venom ointment 1-2 times per day for 7-25 days. Visual Analog Score (VAS) pain scale was compared before and after treatment. All patients were closely examined for any allergenic responses following each treatment session. Results : Using each patient as their own comparator, marked improvements of VAS were observed in 4 patients. Most important, there were no related adverse side effects found. Conclusion : Bee venom Ointment may be considered as an complementary therapy for managing CIPN symptoms.
