Tuned liquid column dampers with adaptive tuning capacity for structural vibration control

  • The natural frequencies of a long span bridge vary during its construction and it is thus difficult to apply traditional tuned liquid column dampers (TLCD) with a fixed configuration to reduce bridge vibration. The restriction of TLCD imposed by frequency tuning requirement also make it difficult to be applied to structure with either very low or high natural frequency. A semi-active tuned liquid column damper (SATLCD), whose natural frequency can be altered by active control of liquid column pressure, is studied in this paper. The principle of SATLCD with adaptive tuning capacity is first introduced. The analytical models are then developed for lateral vibration of a structure with SATLCD and torsional vibration of a structure with SATLCD, respectively, under either harmonic or white noise excitation. The non-linear damping property of SATLCD is linearized by an equivalent linearization technique. Extensive parametric studies are finally carried out in the frequency domain to find the beneficial parameters by which the maximum vibration reduction can be achieved. The key parameters investigated include the distance from the centre line of SATLCD to the rotational axis of a structure, the ratio of horizontal length to the total length of liquid column, head loss coefficient, and frequency offset ratio. The investigations demonstrate that SATLCD can provide a greater flexibility for its application in practice and achieve a high degree of vibration reduction. The sensitivity of SATLCD to the frequency offset between the damper and structure can be improved by adapting its frequency precisely to the measured structural frequency.

A Novel Phase Noise Reduction In Oscillator Using PBG(Photonic Band Gap) Structure and Feedforward Circuit

  • In this paper, PBG structure and feedforward circuit has been used to suppress the phase noise of the oscillator. Microstrip line resonator have low Q, but we can obtain high LO power by feedforward circuit and improve the resonator Q by the PBG, simultaneously. The proposed oscillator which uses PBG and feedforward circuit shows 0${\~}$20 dB phase noise reduction compared to the conventional oscillator. We have obtained -115.8 dBc of phase noise at 100 kHz offset from 2.4 GHz center.

  • In the thesis, For improving the Stability of VCHRO(Voltage Controlled Hair-pin Resonator Oscillator) the new structure using the parallel feedback of the second harmonic is proposed for self-phase locking effect. This module is composed of wilkinson divider, frequency doubler, directional coupler, and bandpass filter using a hair-pin resonator, which are integrated into miniaturized hybrid circuit. The module exhibits output power of 2.5 dBm at 19.5 GHz, -29.83 dBc fundamental frequency suppression and -76.52 dBc/Hz phase noise at 10 kHz offset frequency from carrier of center frequency 19.5 GHz.

  • The damageability and repairability of similar platform type vehicles could be very concerned with design optimization. In all the vehicles crash tested, small size passenger vehicles were weakness in aspect of damageability and repairability. The most critical area appears to be repair cost considering that parts cost is the largest portion of total repair cost segments. Besides repair cost, attaching method of front sidemember and subframe are placed special importance for impact energy absorption and damageability and repairability. So in order to improve damageability and repairability of vehicle structure and body component of the monocoque type passenger vehicles, the end of front side member and front back beam should be designed with optimum level and to supply the end of front side member as a partial condition approx 300mm. The effectiveness of design concept on the 40% offset frontal impact characteristics of the passenger vehicle structure is investigated and summarized.

A Multiphase Compensation Method with Dynamic Element Matching Technique in Σ-Δ Fractional-N Frequency Synthesizers

  • A multiphase compensation method with mismatch linearization technique, is presented and demonstrated in a $\Sigma-\Delta$ fractional-N frequency synthesizer. An on-chip delay-locked loop (DLL) and a proposed delay line structure are constructed to provide multiphase compensation on $\Sigma-\Delta$ quantizetion noise. In the delay line structure, dynamic element matching (DEM) techniques are employed for mismatch linearization. The proposed $\Sigma-\Delta$ fractional-N frequency synthesizer is fabricated in a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology with 2.14-GHz output frequency and 4-Hz resolution. The die size is 0.92 mm$\times$1.15 mm, and it consumes 27.2 mW. In-band phase noise of -82 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and out-of-band phase noise of -103 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset are measured with a loop bandwidth of 200 kHz. The settling time is shorter than $25{\mu}s$.

  • The shaft system of a vessel becomes stiffer because of larger engine power, whereas the hull structure becomes more flexible because of scantling optimization conducted by using high-tensile thick steel plates. The draught-dependent deformation of the hull affects each bearing offset and reaction force comprising the subsequent shaft system. This is the reason that more sophisticated shaft alignments are required. In this study, an FE analysis performed under the expected operating conditions of two (2) vessels, as maximum draught change and to analyze the shaft alignment using the relative bearing offset change, which was derived from an FE analysis of the 50,000 DWT oil/chemical tanker, which has become an eco-friendly vessel in recent years. Based on this, the influence of the hull deflection on the bearing offset was reviewed against results for shaft alignment conditions.

  • In this paper, an enhanced initial ranging algorithm for large-cell coverage fixed wireless communication system is proposed. In typical wireless communication system such as WiBro, because a round-trip delay between a transmitter and a receiver is within one OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) symbol duration, a frequency-domain differential correlation method is generally used. However, the conventional method cannot be applied due to an increase of a maximum time delay in large-cell system. In case of an accumulative differential method, estimation errors can occur because of frequent sign transitions. In this paper, therefore, we propose an algorithm which can estimate a total timing offset in a ranging channel structure for 15 km cell. The proposed method can improve performance by sign comparison based sign error correction rule between the estimated values and using a weighting scheme based on channel correlation, the number of accumulations, and the noise reduction effect in normalization process. Also, it can estimate the integer timing offset of symbol duration by comparing peak-powers after compensating for the fractional timing offset of symbol duration.

  • In the proposed paper, we designed low noise frequency synthesizer with compact size for Multi-Band. The proposed frequency synthesizer consists of fundamental frequency band(2 GHz) and harmonic frequency band(4 GHz). To improve the phase noise and spurious level of frequency synthesizer, we analyze how the configuration of frequency synthesizer affect the phase noise and design the multi-band's structure. The implemented frequency synthesizer reduce both the phase noise and spurious level. The phase noise is -92.17 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz frequency offset in 2 GHz and -90.50 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz frequency offset in 4 GHz. All spurious signals including fundamental frequency are suppressed at least 20 dBc than the second harmonic frequency.

  • This paper proposed M-ary QAM OFDM system for efficiently transmission in multipath fading environment. And, this system have analyzed reception performance by occurred synchronization error to frequency offset in presence of multipath fading. As a result, it confirmed justification by simulation and BER theory of 64QAM OFDM of SP frame structure for the digital broadcasting.

  • The absolute pressure sensor using SDB wafer has been fabricated. the structure of the sensor consists of two wheatstone bridges and a diaphragm. One of the two wheatstone bridges is located on the edge of diaphragm, and the other is located on the center of diaphragm. The diaphragm cavity is sealted in vacuum (~10$^{5}$ Torr) to reduce the effect of temperature due to the vapor in the cavity on the sensitivity of pressure sensor. This is the minor method of temperature compensation method. In this experiment the main compensation method is to use the difference of the two bridge offset voltages. The drift of offset voltage with temperature is reduced by using this method so that temperature charcteristics is improved. In this method the temperature effect in the range of 22~100.deg. C was compensated over 80%.
