  • In this paper we present numerical methods fur computations of nonequilibrium hypersonic flow of air around bodies including chemical reaction effects and present numerical result of the flow over concave corners. We developed implicit finite difference method to overcome numerical difficulties with the lack of resolution behind the shock and near the body. Using our method we were able to find details of the flow properties near the shock and body and were able to continue the computation of the flow for a long distance from the corner of the body.

  • The interaction between particles and fluid was investigated by IB-SEM numerical method which is a combination of combing the spectral/hp element method and the rigid immersed boundary method. The accuracy of this numerical method was verified based on the computed results with the traditional body-fitted mesh in numerical simulation of the flow through the cylinder. Then the governing equations of particles motion and contact in fluid are constructed. The movement of the particles and the interaction between the fluid and the particles are investigated. This method avoided the problem of low computational efficiency and error caused by the re-division of the grid when the solids moved. Finally, the movement simulation of multi particles in the fluid was carried out, which can provide a completely new numerical simulation method.

  • Three methods for design sensitivity such as numerical differentiation, analytical method and semi-analytical method have been developed for the last three decades. Although analytical design sensitivity analysis is exact, it is hard to implement for practical design problems. Therefore, numerical method such as finite difference method is widely used to simply obtain the design sensitivity in most cases. The numerical differentiation is sufficiently accurate and reliable for most linear problems. However, it turns out that the numerical differentiation is inefficient and inaccurate because its computational cost depends on the number of design variables and large numerical errors can be included especially in nonlinear design sensitivity analysis. Thus semi-analytical method is more suitable for complicated design problems. Moreover semi-analytical method is easy to be performed in design procedure, which can be coupled with an analysis solver such as commercial finite element package. In this paper, implementation procedure for the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and computational technique is proposed, which evaluates the pseudo-load for design sensitivity analysis easily by using the design variation of corresponding internal nodal forces. Errors in semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis are examined and numerical examples are illustrated to confirm the reduction of numerical error considerably.

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical solutions to steady state nonlinear elliptical partial differential equations (PDE) of the form $u_{xx}+u_{yy}+Du_{x}+Eu_{y}+Fu=G$, where D, E, F are functions of x, y, u, $u_{x}$, and $u_{y}$, and G is a function of x and y. Dirichlet boundary conditions in a rectangular region are considered. We propose alternating direction shooting method for solving such nonlinear PDE. Numerical results show that the alternating direction shooting method performed better than the commonly used linearized iterative method.

  • A mixed analytical/numerical method is developed here to solve the low Reynolds number kepsilon turbulence model. In this method the advection-diffusion part is solved numerically, while the source terms are split into two parts: one part is solved analytically and the next is solved numerically.

  • In this paper, we present a simple explicit type numerical method for discretizations in time for solving one dimensional Burgers' equations. The proposed method does not need an iteration process that may be required in most implicit methods and have good convergence and efficiency in computational sense compared to other known numerical methods. For evidences, several numerical demonstrations are also provided.

  • A high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations was developed on unstructured triangular meshes. For this purpose, the BR2 methd(the second Bassi and Rebay discretization) was adopted for space discretization and an implicit Euler backward method was used for time integration. Numerical tests were conducted to estimate the convergence order of the numerical solutions of the Poiseuille flow for which analytic solutions are available for comparison. Also, the flows around a flat plate, a 2-D circular cylinder, and an NACA0012 airfoil were numerically simulated. The numerical results showed that the present implicit discontinuous Galerkin method is an efficient method to obtain very accurate numerical solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured meshes.

  • The aim of this paper is to explore the 8th-order Adams-Bashforth-Moulton (ABM8) method in the solution of the point reactor kinetics equations. The numerical experiment considers feedback reactivity by Doppler effects, and insertions of reactivity. The Doppler effects is approximated with an adiabatic nuclear reactor that is a typical approximation. The numerical results were compared and discussed with several solution methods. The CATS method was used as a benchmark method. According with the numerical experiments results, the ABM8 method can be considered as one of the main solution method for changes reactivity relatively large.

  • A meshless method with novel variation of point collocation by finite mixture approximation is developed in this paper, termed the meshless finite mixture (MFM) method. It is based on the finite mixture theorem and consists of two or more existing meshless techniques for exploitation of their respective merits for the numerical solution of partial differential boundary value (PDBV) problems. In this representation, the classical reproducing kernel particle and differential quadrature techniques are mixed in a point collocation framework. The least-square method is used to optimize the value of the weight coefficient to construct the final finite mixture approximation with higher accuracy and numerical stability. In order to validate the developed MFM method, several one- and two-dimensional PDBV problems are studied with different mixed boundary conditions. From the numerical results, it is observed that the optimized MFM weight coefficient can improve significantly the numerical stability and accuracy of the newly developed MFM method for the various PDBV problems.

  • Since structural systems may fail in any one of several failure modes, computation of system reliability is always difficult. A method using numerical quadrature for computing structural system reliability with either one or more than one failure mode is presented in this paper. Statistically correlated safety margin equations are transformed into a group of uncorrelated variables and the joint density function of these uncorrelated variables can be generated by using the Maximum Entropy Method. Structural system reliability is then obtained by integrating the joint density function with the transformed safety domain enclosed within a set of linear equations. The Gaussian numerical integration method is introduced in order to improve computational accuracy. This method can be used to evaluate structural system reliability for Gaussian or non-Gaussian variables with either linear or nonlinear safety boundaries. It is also valid for implicit safety margins such as computer programs. Both the theory and the examples show that this method is simple in concept and easy to implement.
