By the works of Levine [2] and Rolfsen [5], [6], it is known that a local move called a crossing-change is strongly related to the Alexander invariant. In this note, we will consider to what degree the relationship is strong. Let K be a knot, and $K^{\times}$ the set of knots obtained from a knot K by a single crossing-change. Let MK be the Alexander invariant of a knot K, and MK the set of the Alexander invariants $\{MK\}_{K{\in}\mathcal{K}}$ for a set of knots $\mathcal{K}$. Our main result is the following: If both $K_1$ and $K_2$ are knots with unknotting number one, then $MK_1=MK_2$ implies $MK_1^{\times}=MK_2^{\times}$. On the other hand, there exists a pair of knots $K_1$ and $K_2$ such that $MK_1=MK_2$ and $MK_1^{\times}{\neq}MK_2^{\times}$. In other words, the Gordian complex is not homogeneous with respect to Alexander invariants.
The field of vehicle routing is currently growing rapidly because of many actual applications in truckload and less than truckload trucking, courier services, door to door services, and many other problems that generally hinder the optimization of transportation costs in a logistics network. The rapidly increasing number of customers in such a network has caused problems such as difficulty in cost optimization in terms of getting a global optimum solution in an acceptable time. Fast algorithms are needed to find sufficient solutions in a limited time that can be used for real time scheduling. In this paper, the nearest L-method (NLNM) is proposed to obtain a vehicle routing solution. String neighbors of different lengths were chosen, tested and compared. The applied de crossing procedure is meant to solve the routes by NLNM by giving a better solution and shorter computation time than that of NLNM with long string neighbors.
Generally a road vehicle's wrong entry into level crossing gives rise to hazardous events, the eventual collision with a approaching train depends on the effective operation of safety barriers such a abnormal condition detecting or emergency braking. In this paper, the risk assessment models developed for the level-crossing accidents will be introduced. The definition of hazardous events and the related hazardous factors are identified by the review of the accident history and engineering interpretation of the accident behavior. A probability of the hazardous events will be evaluated by the FTA, which is based on the accident scenario. For the severity estimation, the critical factors which can effect on the consequence will be reviewed during the ETA. Finally, the number of casualty for the public(vehicle drivers) and the train passengers are converted into an equivalent fatality.
Greater expansion and more frequent operation of the railroad transportation system anticipated due to its characteristics including low cost, safety and mass transportation. Recently, effects on the railway structures due to expansion of newly constructed road, construction of subway, city gas pipeline, communication network, electric power network and construction of other railway underground crossing in accordance with urban planning and organization has influenced safe operation of trains. Accordingly, standard for selection of construction method that will enable construction of more economical and rational subway underground crossing structures by preventing problems occurring at the time of above construction works and accidents in safe operation of trains due to construction in advance is definitively necessary. Although there are numerous construction methods that can be applied at the time of construction of railway underground crossing, there are much difficulties in selection of appropriate construction method that considers characteristics of each construction method on non-excavation type construction method, train operation plan of number of operational routes and on-site circumstances. Therefore, this research aims to present rational standard for selection of construction method for such, and standard for slowdown speed and interception of train when passing the areas of slowdown in sectors under construction.

The printed circuit board (PCB) can be used only 2 layers of front and back. Therefore, the wiring line segments are located in 2 layers without crossing each other. In this case, the line segment can be appear in both layers and this line segment is to resolve the crossing problem go through the via. The via minimization problem (VMP) has minimum number of via in layout design problem. The VMP is classified by NP-complete because of the polynomial time algorithm to solve the optimal solution has been unknown yet. This paper suggests polynomial time algorithm that can be solve the optimal solution of VMP. This algorithm transforms n-line segments into vertices, and p-crossing into edges of a graph. Then this graph is partitioned into 3-coloring sets of each vertex in each set independent each other. For 3-coloring sets $C_i$, (i=1,2,3), the $C_1$ is assigned to front F, $C_2$ is back B, and $C_3$ is B-F and connected with via. For the various experimental data, though this algorithm can be require O(np) polynomial time, we obtain the optimal solution for all of data.
The objective of this research is to evaluate the pedestrian signal time involving green and flashing green times. The minimum pedestrian green indication should give time for pedestrian to start crossing safely, and the flashing green indication should give time to complete the crossing. An average pedestrian crossing speed of 1.1(m/s) was estimated by analyzing the field data which was slower than the 1.2(m/s) currently used. Furthermore, the study proposed that design speed for the flashing green time should be slow speed for considerations pedestrian safety, not the average speed. The 0.78-1.01(m/s) of pedestrian speed was estimated at the elementary school areas that indicated 0.2(m/s) slower than the other areas. The pedestrian starting time (perception/reaction time) and time headway from front to back of herd was estimated to determine minimum pedestrian green time. the pedestrian starting time was estimated to determine minimum pedestrian green time. The pedestrian starting time was ranged 2.52-4.29 seconds. The time interval between the pedestrian rows was found to be 1.25-1.86 seconds, which declines as the pedestrian rows increases, The equation to calculate the pedestrian signal, which declines as the pedestrian rows increases. The equation to calculate the pedestrian signal time is proposed using the pedestrian starting time, the time interval between the pedestrian rows, and pedestrian crossing speed given area types (commercial, business, mixed, and elementary school areas), number of both-directional pedestrians for a cycle, crosswalk length and width.
Current methods for evaluating unsignalized intersections, and estimating level-of-service (LOS) is determined from efficiency-based criteria such as little or no delay to very long delays. At present, similar procedures to evaluate intersections using safety-based criteria do not exist. The improvement of sight distances at intersections is the most effective way of improving intersection safety. However, a set of procedures is necessary to account for the limitations in current methodology. Such an approach would build upon such methods, but also account for: deficiencies in the current deterministic solution for the determination of intersection sight distances; opportunity for an accident and severity of an accident; and cost-effectiveness of attaining various levels of sight distances. In this research, a model that estimates the degree of safety at two-way stop-controlled intersections is described. Only crossing maneuvers are considered in this study because accidents caused by the crossing maneuvers are the dominate type among intersection accidents. Monte Carlo methods are used to estimate the hazard at an intersection as a function of roadway features and traffic conditions. Driver`s minimum gap acceptance in the crossing vehicles and headway distribution on the major road are used in the crossing vehicles and headway distribution on the major road are used in the model to simulate the real intersectional maneuvers. Other random variables addressed in the model are: traffic speeds; preception-reaction times of both drivers in the crossing vehicles and drivers in oncoming vehicles on the major road; and vehicles on the major roads. The developed model produces the total number of conflicts per year per vehicle and total potential kinetic energy per year per vehicle dissipated during conflicts as measurements of safety at intersections. Based on the results from the developed simulation model, desirable sight distances for various speeds were determined as 350 feet, 450 feet and 550 feet for 40 mph, 50 mph and 60 mph prevailing speed on the major road, respectively. These values are seven to eight percent less than those values recommended by AASHTO. A safety based level-of-service (LOS) is also developed using the results of the simulation model. When the total number of conflicts per vehicle is less than 0.05 at an intersection, the LOS of the intersection is `A' and when the total number of conflicts per vehicle is larger than 0.25 at an intersection, the LOS is `F'. Similarly, when the total hazard per vehicle is less than 350, 000 1b-ft2/sec2, the LOS is `F'. Once evaluation of the current safety at the intersection is complete, a sensitivity analysis can be done by changing one or more input parameters. This will estimate the benefit in terms of time and budget of hazard reduction based upon improving geometric and traffic characteristics at the intersection. This method will also enable traffic engineers in local governments to generate a priority list of intersection improvement projects.
We introduce a new method to transform a knot diagram into a diagram of an unknot using a polynomial representation of the knot. Here the unknotting sequence of a knot diagram with least number of crossing changes can be realized by a family of polynomial maps. The number of singular knots in this family is defined to be the singularity index of the diagram. We show that the singularity index of a diagram is always less than or equal to its unknotting number.
Seoul metropolitan government has introduced Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in some major urban corridors on July 1st, 2004, and has reported that it was successful on the ground that bus speed has been increased in the corridors with BRT system and that it has also resulted in the increase of bus patrons. However, there comes a negative claim that BRT has increased the number of fatalities in the same corridors. This study first aims at developing safety evaluation indicators of pedestrian crossings, then compares values of those indicators from pedestrian crossings with and without BRT systems. The safety evaluation indicators of pedestrian crossing are developed as: the number (or ratio) of conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles, the number (or ratio) of vehicles violating pedestrian signals, the number (or ratio) of pedestrians remaining crossings at red signals, and the number (ratio) of pedestrians walking beyond crossing areas. When we compare values of these indicators for both pedestrian crossings with and without BRT system, it has turned out that crossings with BRT systems has more number of conflicts than the crossings without BRT systems, but it cannot be said that the ratio of conflicts will be different between two crossing types. It means that the number of conflict will increase as the number of pedestrians and vehicles in the crossings. When we note that BRT system intrinsically attract more number of pedestrians who get-in or get-off bus stops, we cannot said that BRT system will be safer for pedestrians.

Recently, bicycle accidents have increased with the ever-increasing number of cyclists. Bicycle accidents occurred frequently in intersections, and the perpendicular collision between a right-turning car and a crossing bicycle was the most prevalent accident type. In particular, the collision was caused by motorists' carelessness. In other words, the accident-involved motorists did not pay sufficient attention to a bicycle crossing behind them. Another cause was a cyclist's higher speed than pedestrians. This paper evaluated the potential risk of the collision between right-turning cars and crossing bicycles based on simulation experiments, with motorists' speed and carelessness focused on. Consequently, it was found that to reduce the potential risk of the collisions a motorist should slow down and pay more attention to the rear sight by turning his/her head.
