  • The Inverted Pendulum has been one of most popular nonlinear dynamic systems for the exploration of control techniques. This paper presents a new linear optimal control techniques and nonlinear neural network learning methods. The multiayered neural networks are used to add nonlinear effects on the linear optimal regulator(LQR). The new regulator can compensate nonlinear system uncertainties that are not considered in the LQR design, and can tolerated a wider range of uncertainties than the LQR alone. The new regulator has two neural networks for modeling and control. The neural network for modeling is used to obtain a more accurate model than the given mathematical equations. The neural network for control is used to overcome deficiencies by adding corrections to the linear coefficients of the LQR and by adding nonlinear effects on the LQR. Computer simulations are performed to show the applicability and a more robust regulator than the LQR alone.

  • In this study the optimal control of fed-batch glycerol fermentation is investigated based on an impulsive dynamical system. Considering the sudden increase of the glycerol and alkali in fed-batch culture of biodissimilation of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol, this paper proposes a non-linear impulsive system of fed-batch culture. The existence, uniqueness and regularity properties of piecewise solution for the system are proved. In view of the controllability of volumes of glycerol added to the reactor instantaneously, the paper constructs an optimal control model based on the nonlinear impulsive system and the existence of the optimal control is obtained. The control variables here are the moments and the sizes of jumps in the states at the discrete instants and the objective is to maximize the productivity of 1,3-propanediol over one cycle.

  • In this paper, a systematic technique is proposed for the optimal placement and design of nonlinear dampers for building structures. The concept of Output Frequency Response Function (OFRF) is applied to analytically represent the output frequency response of a building frame where nonlinear viscous dampers are fitted for suppression of vibration during earthquakes. An effective algorithm is derived using the analytical representation to optimally determine the locations and parameters of the nonlinear dampers. Various numerical examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the optimal designs. A comparison of the vibration suppression performance with that of the frame structure under a random or uniform damping allocation is also made to demonstrate the advantages of the new designs over traditional solutions.

  • This paper deals with the existence of optimal controls and maximal principles for semilinear evolution equations with the nonlinear term satisfying Lipschitz continuity. We also present the necessary conditions of optimality which are described by the adjoint state corresponding to the linear equations without a condition of differentiability for nonlinear term.

  • With the increase of interest in developing Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), an optimal ship route planning is gradually gaining popularity as one of the important subsystems for autonomy of modern marine vessels. In the present paper, an optimal ship route planning model for MASS is proposed using a nonlinear MPC approach together with a nonlinear MMG model. Results drawn from this study demonstrated that the optimization problem for the ship route was successfully solved with satisfaction of the nonlinear dynamics of the ship and all constraints for the state and manipulated variables using the nonlinear MPC approach. Given that a route generation system capable of accounting for nonlinear dynamics of the ship and equality/inequality constraints is essential for achieving fully autonomous navigation at sea, it is expected that this paper will contribute to the field of autonomous vehicles by demonstrating the performance of the proposed optimal ship route planning model.

  • This paper presents the new adaptive optimal scheme for the nonlinear systems, which is based on the Picard's iterative approximation and Fast Walsh transform. It is well known that the Walsh function approach method is very difficult to apply for the analysis and optimal control of nonlinear systems. However, these problems can be easily solved by the improvement of the previous adaptive optimal scheme. The proposed method is easily applicable to the analysis and optimal control of nonlinear systems.

  • In this paper, a near optimal decentralized observer-controller design method is proposed for ramp metering systems based on SDRE (State Dependent Riccati Equation) approach. The optimal nonlinear observer gain is parameterized in terms of the solution matrix of an SDRE. This paper gives a simple algorithm to compute the near optimal observer gain. The optimal control design problem is also considered. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to illuminate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed design method.

  • Due to the difficulty in solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equation, the nonlinear optimal control approach is not very practical in general. To overcome this problem, Ezal et al. (2000) first solved a linear optimal control problem for the linearized model of a nonlinear system given in the strict-feedback form. Then, using the backstepping procedure, a nonlinear feedback controller was designed where the linear part is same as the linear feedback obtained from the linear optimal control design. However, their construction is based on the cancellation of the high order nonlinearity, which limits the application to the smooth ($C^{\infty}$) vector fields. In this paper, we develop an alternative method for backstepping procedure, so that the vector field can be just $C^1$, which allows this approach to be applicable to much larger class of nonlinear systems.

  • In this paper, stabilization inverse optimal control for nonlinear systems with structural uncertainty is considered. Based on the control Lyapunov function, a theorem for the globally asymptotic stability is presented. From this a less conservative condition for the inverse optimal control is derived. The result is used to design an inverse optimal controller for a class of nonlinear systems, that improves and extends the existing results. The class of nonlinear system considered is also enlarger. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the method.

  • In this paper, we propose a nonlinear variable PID controller using a cell-mediated immune response. An immune feedback response is based on the functioning of biological T-cells. An immune feedback response and P-controller of conventional PID controllers resemble each other in role and mechanism. Therefore, we extend immune feedback mechanism to nonlinear PE controller. And in order to choose the optimal nonlinear PID controller games, we also propose the on-line tuning algorithm of nonlinear functions parameters in immune feedback mechanism. The trained parameters of nonlinear functions are adapted to the variations of the system parameters and any command velocity. And the adapted parameters obtained outputs of nonlinear functions with an optimal control performance. To verify performances of the proposed control systems, the speed control of nonlinear BC motor is performed. The simulation results show that the proposed control systems are effective in tracking a command velocity under system variations.
