  • A time-optimal control law for quick, strongly nonlinear systems like revolute robots has been developed and demonstrated. This procedure involves the utilization of neural networks as state feedback controllers that learn the time-optimal control actions by means of an iterative minimization of both the final time and the final state error for the known and unknown systems with constrained inputs and/or states. The nature of neural networks as a parallel processor would circumvent the problem of "curse of dimensionality".ity".uot;.

  • The study presents the optimum design of B/C midship structure based on the classification society's Rule. The SUMT (Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique), using the Direct Search Methods (Hooke and Jeeves, Simplex) is applied to the solution of this nonlinear optimum design problem with constraints. Through the optimum designs of existing ships(60k, 186k, 220k), the amount 0.45-6.18% in weight of their midship structures are obtained on the viewpoint of minimum weight design.

  • A nonsmooth PGD scheme for minimizing a nonsmooth convex function is presented. In the parallelization step of the algorithm, a method due to Pang, Han and Pangaraj (1991), [7], is employed to solve a subproblem for constructing search directions. The convergence analysis is given as well.

  • The effectiveness of an actual combat tank system is analyzed. A measure of effectiveness which includes performance and reliability called pseudo-reliability is introduced. A model is introduced to optimize the design of the system in which the system pseudo-reliability is maximized subject to cost constraint. This model is a nonlinear programming problem and is solved by the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT). A numerical exampl with actual data from the test evaluation of five combat tanks is used to illustrate the model.

  • A cost minimization model for designing AS/RS (Automated Storage/Retrieval Systtems) has been developed under the S/R (Storage/Retrieval) machine throughput rate and total storage capacity requirements. The objective function includes S/R machine cost storage rack cost, and interface conveyor cost. Since the model is a nonlinear integer programming problem which is very hard to solve with large problem size, the model is simplified using previous research results to be solved exactly and a simultion procedure is combined to verify that throughput rate requirements are satisfied.

  • This paper presents an optimum design of a linear induction motor(LIM) using genetic algorithm(GA). Sequential unconstrained minimization technique(SUMT) is used to transform the nonlinear optimization with constraints to a simple unconstrained problem. The objective functions of LIM such as trust, weight are optimized and the result was applied to the design of linear induction pump.

  • In this paper, we give a solving approach based on a logarithmic-exponential multiplier penalty function for the constrained minimization problem. It is proved exact in the sense that the local optimizers of a nonlinear problem are precisely the local optimizers of the logarithmic-exponential multiplier penalty problem.

  • The aim of this paper is to construct a new method for finding the zeros of the sum of two maximally monotone mappings in Hilbert spaces. We will define a simple function such that its set of zeros coincide with that of the sum of two maximal monotone operators. Moreover, we will use the Newton-Raphson algorithm to get an approximate zero. In addition, some illustrative examples are given at the end of this paper.

  • A method to identify nonlinear elements position of a nonlinear system is presented. Nonlinear elements position can be identified by an equivalent error damping and stiffness matrices which are based on the equivalent linearization technique. The procedures of this technique are: (1) Obtain input force and system response. (2) Define error between the actual and linearized restoring forces. (3) Calculate linearized damping and stiffness coefficients to minimize the square error sum. Several examples are tested and found that these methods are very effective not only to locate the nonlinear elements position but also to identify the degree of nonlinearity qualitatively. Nonlinear type can be qualitatively identified by examining the plots of restoring force vs equivalent state values.

  • Recently, 3D structure recovery through self-calibration of camera has been actively researched. Traditional calibration algorithm requires known 3D coordinates of the control points while self-calibration only requires the corresponding points of images, thus it has more flexibility in real application. In general, self-calibration algorithm results in the nonlinear optimization problem using constraints from the intrinsic parameters of the camera. Thus, it requires initial value for the nonlinear minimization. Traditional approaches get the initial values assuming they have the same intrinsic parameters while they are dealing with the situation where the intrinsic parameters of the camera may change. In this paper, we propose new initialization method using the minimum 2 images. Proposed method is based on the assumption that the least violation of the camera’s intrinsic parameter gives more stable initial value. Synthetic and real experiment shows this result.
