This paper presents a spatial catenary cable element for the nonlinear analysis of cable-supported structures. An incremental-iterative solution based on the Newton-Raphson method is adopted for solving the equilibrium equation. As a result, the element stiffness matrix and nodal forces are determined, wherein the effect of self-weight and pretension are taken into account. In the case of the initial cable tension is given, an algorithm for form-finding of cable-supported structures is proposed to determine precisely the unstressed length of the cables. Several classical numerical examples are solved and compared with the other available numerical methods or experiment tests showing the accuracy and efficiency of the present elements.

In this paper, we analyze the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for second-order elliptic equations with nonlinear coefficients, which are used in many fields. We present the HDG method that uses a mixed formulation based on numerical trace and flux. Under assumptions on the nonlinear coefficient and H2-regularity for a dual problem, we prove that the discrete systems are well-posed and the numerical solutions have the optimal order of convergence as a mesh parameter. Also, we provide a matrix formulation that can be calculated using an iterative technique for numerical experiments. Finally, we present representative numerical examples in 2D to verify the validity of the proof of Theorem 3.10.
In this paper a nonlinear matrix equation is considered which has the form $$P(X)=A_0X^m+A_1X^{m-1}+{\cdots}+A_{m-1}X+A_m=0$$ where X is an $n{\times}n$ unknown real matrix and $A_m$, $A_{m-1}$, ${\cdots}$, $A_0$ are $n{\times}n$ matrices with real elements. Newtons method is applied to find the skew-symmetric solvent of the matrix polynomial P(X). We also suggest an algorithm which converges the skew-symmetric solvent even if the Fr$\acute{e}$echet derivative of P(X) is singular.

For the linearized differential algebraic equation of the nonlinear constrained system, exact initial values of the acceleration are needed to solve itself. It may be very troublesome to perform the inverse operation for obtaining the incremental quantities since the mass matrix contains the zero element in the diagonal. This fact makes the mass matrix impossible to be positive definite. To overcome this singularity phenomenon the mass matrix needs to be modified to allow the feasible application of predictor and corrector in the iterative computation. In this paper the proposed numerical algorithm based on the modified mass matrix combines the conventional implicit algorithm, Newton-Raphson method and Newmark method. The numerical example presents reliabilities for the proposed algorithm via comparisons of the 4th order Runge-kutta method. The proposed algorithm seems to be satisfactory even though the acceleration, Lagrange multiplier, and energy show unstable behaviour. Correspondingly, it provides one important clue to another algorithm for the enhancement of the numerical results.

The purpose of this study is to design an anti-sway motion for industrial overhead cranes which transport objects on a horizontal plane by adjusting movements of a trolley motor and a girder motor. The movement of a hoist motor has not been considered at this time since its role was assumed to move objects only vertically, therefore, not to affect the swing motion of objects. The dynamic behavior of the swing motion shows nonlinear characteristics, which makes the design of anti-sway motion controller difficult. First of all, the nonlinear state equation for the motion of industrial overhead cranes has been derived. Then they have been linearized about normal operating states determined by the dynamic characteristics of motor motion-acceleration, constant speed, and deceleration, and deceleration, during transportation. The partial state feedback control algorithm based on this linearized state equation has been developed on order to suppress the swing motion. The simulation results have demonstrated satisfactory performance of the proposed controller.
A new sort of learning algorithm named whole learning algorithm is proposed to simulate the nonlinear and dynamic behavior of RC members for the estimation of structural integrity. A mathematical technique to solve the multi-objective optimization problem is applied for the learning of the feedforward neural network, which is formulated so as to minimize the Euclidean norm of the error vector defined as the difference between the outputs and the target values for all the learning data sets. The change of the outputs is approximated in the first-order with respect to the amount of weight modification of the network. The governing equation for weight modification to make the error vector null is constituted with the consideration of the approximated outputs for all the learning data sets. The solution is neatly determined by means of the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse after summarization of the governing equation into the linear simultaneous equations with a rectangular matrix of coefficients. The learning efficiency of the proposed algorithm from the viewpoint of computational cost is verified in three types of problems to learn the truth table for exclusive or, the stress-strain relationship described by the Ramberg-Osgood model and the nonlinear and dynamic behavior of RC members observed under an earthquake.
In near-fault earthquake prone areas, the velocity pulse-like seismic waves often results in excessive horizontal displacement for structures, which may result in severe structural failure during large or near-fault earthquakes. The recently developed isolator-gap damper (IGD) systems provide a solution for the large horizontal displacement of long period base-isolated structures. However, the hysteresis characteristics of the IGD system are significantly different from the traditional hysteretic behavior. At present, the hysteretic behavior is difficult to be reflected in the structural analysis and performance evaluation especially under random earthquake excitations for lacking of effective analysis models which prevent the application of this kind of IGD system. In this paper, we propose a mathematical hysteretic model for the IGD system that presents its nonlinear hysteretic characteristics. The equivalent linearization is conducted on this nonlinear model, which requires the variances of the IGD responses. The covariance matrix for the responses of the structure and the IGD system is obtained for random earthquake excitations represented by the Kanai-Tajimi spectrum by solving the Lyapunov equation. The responses obtained by the equivalent linearization are verified in comparison with the nonlinear responses by the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) analysis for random earthquake excitations.
A constitutive model on oorthotropic thermo-elasto-viscoplasticity for fiber-reinforced composite materials Is illustrated, and their thermomechanical responses are predicted with the fully-coupled finite element formulation. The unmixing-mixing scheme can be adopted with the multipartite matrix method as the constitutive model. Basic assumptions based upon the composite micromechanics are postulated, and the strain components of thermal expansion due to temperature change are included In the formulation. Also. more than two sets of mechanical variables, which represent the deformation states of multipartite matrix can be introduced arbitrarily. In particular, the unmixing-mixing scheme can be used with any well-known isotropic viscoplastic theory of the matrix material. The scheme unnecessitates the complex processes for developing an orthotropic viscoplastic theory. The governing equations based on fully-coupled thermomechanics are derived with constitutive arrangement by the unmixing-mixing concept. By considering some auxiliary conditions, the Initial-boundary value problem Is completely set up. As a tool of numerical analyses, the finite element method Is used with isoparametric Interpolation fer the displacement and the temperature fields. The equation of mutton and the energy conservation equation are spatially discretized, and then the time marching techniques such as the Newmark method and the Crank-Nicolson technique are applied. To solve the ultimate nonlinear simultaneous equations, a successive iteration algorithm is constructed with subincrementing technique. As a numerical study, a series of analyses are performed with the main focus on the thermomechanical coupling effect in composite materials. The progress of viscoplastic deformation, the stress-strain relation, and the temperature History are careful1y examined when composite laminates are subjected to repeated cyclic loading.

When two-link flexible arm is rotated about an joint axis, transverse vibration may occur. In this paper, vibration dynamics of flexible robot arm is modeled by using Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and Lagrange equation. Using the fact that matrix $\dot{D}$-2C is skew symmetric, new controllers which have a simplified structure with less computational burden is proposed. Lyapunov stability theory is applied to achieve a stable deterministic nonlinear controller for the regulation of joint angle.

A spectral element model-based structural damage identification method (SDIM) was derived in the previous study by using the damage-induced changes in frequency response functions. However the previous SDIM often provides poor damage identification results because the nonlinear effect of damage magnitude was not taken into account. Thus, this paper improves the previous SDIM by taking into account the nonlinear effect of damage magnitude. Accordingly an iterative solution method is used in this study to solve the nonlinear matrix equation for local damages distribution. The present SDIM is evaluated through the numerically simulated damage identification tests.
