  • Due to the heterogeneity nature of the concrete, it is difficult to simulate the hyperdynamic behaviour and crack trajectory of concrete material when subjected to explosion loads. In this paper, a 3D nonlinear numerical study was conducted to simulate the hyperdynamic behaviour of concrete under various loading conditions using Riedel-Hiermaier-Thoma (RHT) model. Detailed calibration was conducted to identify the optimal parameters for the RHT model on the material level. For the component level, the calibrated RHT parameters were used to simulate the failure behaviour of plain concrete (PC) slab under free air blast load. The response was compared with an available experimental result. The results show the proposed numerical model can accurately simulate the crack trajectory and the failure mode of the PC slab under free air blast load.

  • A series of dynamic and static tests were conducted to observe the actual responses of a 1:5 scale 3-story reinforced concrete (RC) frame which was designed only for gravity loads. One of the major objectives of these experiments are to provide the calibration to the available static and dynamic inelastic techniques. In this study, the experimental results were simulated by using a nonlinear analysis program for reinforced concrete frame, IDARC-2D. The evaluation of the degree of the simulation leads to the conclusion that while the global behaviors such as story drifts and shears can be in general simulated with the limited accuracy in the dynamic nonlinear analysis, it is rather easy and simple to get the fairly high level of accuracy in the prediction of global and local behaviors in the static nonlinear analysis by using IDARC-2D.

  • In this paper, a parallel algorithm of nonlinear dynamic analysis of three-dimensional (3D) reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures based on the platform of graphics processing unit (GPU) is proposed. Time integration is performed using Newmark method for nonlinear implicit dynamic analysis and parallelization strategies are presented. Correspondingly, a parallel Preconditioned Conjugate Gradients (PCG) solver on GPU is introduced for repeating solution of the equilibrium equations for each time step. The RC frames were simulated using fiber beam model to capture nonlinear behaviors of concrete and reinforcing bars. The parallel finite element program is developed utilizing Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA). The accuracy of the GPU-based parallel program including single precision and double precision was verified in comparison with ABAQUS. The numerical results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can take full advantage of the parallel architecture of the GPU, and achieve the goal of speeding up the computation compared with CPU.

  • This study investigates the ultimate behavior of reinforced concrete beams by means of practical nonlinear finite element (FE) analyses. Uniaxial constitutive models for the concrete and steel material are selected in this study. The adopted material model is integrated into the ABAQUS fiber beam elements through a user-defined material subroutine (UMAT). Within a developed nonlinear finite element framework, the FE results have been compared to experimental results reported by other researchers. It has been found that the proposed finite element model is capable of predicting the initial cracking load level, the yield load, the ultimate load, and the crack distribution with acceptable accuracy.

  • A new approach for nonlinear finite element analysis of corroded reinforcements in RC structures is elaborated in the article. An algorithmic procedure for producing the tension-stiffening curve of RC elements taking into consideration most of effective parameters, e.g.: the rate of steel bar corrosion, bond-slip behavior, concrete cover and amount of reinforcement, is illustrated. This has been established on both experimental and analytical bases. This algorithm is implemented into a nonlinear finite element analysis program. The abilities of the resulted program have been studied by modeling some experimental specimens showing a reasonable agreement between the analytical and experimental findings.

  • In this study, analysis and design programs of bending of RC beams strengthened with fiber sheets are developed by using Visual Basic Language. The program consists two groups, ultimate strength method and nonlinear flexural analysis method. Ultimate strength method regards concrete compressive stress as a rectangular stress block and do not consider tensile stress of concrete and load-deflection curves. On the other hand, nonlinear flexural analysis considers tensile stress of concrete, load-deflection curves, state of stress distribution and failure strain of strengthening material. Also, the analysis method used in this study regards nonlinear flexural stress as compressive stress of concrete. This program can be a good tool for determining the bending strength of strengthened RC beams and estimating the amount of fiber sheets for practical use.

  • A nonlinear finite element analysis of R/C hybrid deep T-beam with web opening subjected to pure torsion is presented. Hexahedral 8-nodes and space truss element were used for modeling concrete and reinforcement. The reinforcement was assumed perfectly bonded to the corresponding nodes of the concrete element. The constitutive relations for concrete and reinforcement are based on the modified field theory and elastic perfectly plastic. The smear crack approach was adopted for modeling the crack. The torque-twist angle relationship curve based on the finite element analysis was compared to the experimental results. The comparison shows that the curve of torque-twist angle predicted by the nonlinear finite element analysis is linear before cracking and close to the experimental result. After cracking, the curve becomes nonlinear and stiffer compared to the experimental result.

  • The analytical model is developed in order to predict the nonlinear flexural responses of bonded and unbonded prestressed concrete beam which contains advanced composite materials. The block concept is used, which be regarded as an intermediate modeling method between the couple method with one block and the layered method with multiple sliced blocks in a section. The model can successfully predict the flexural behavior of variously reinforced prestressed concrete beams.

  • In the paper, a simplified method for nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete structures is presented, which is based on timeoshenko beam theory and constitutive equations that are given by the relation of average stress and average strain for concrete and reinforcing bars. Especially, this method consider shear deformation and determine the failure mode. In this paper, 1-D beam element model and program considering shear deformation are suggested. In addition, program procedure is presented briefly and the results are plotted with test examples.

  • The objectives of this paper is to analyze the reinforced concrete structures by using fiber model. In this study, the fiber modeling techniques including modeling of support conditions are studied. In order to verify the modeling techniques, analysis results obtained for reinforced concrete cantilever beam and reinforced concrete T-girder bridge under cyclic loading are compared with experimental results from full scale test. From the comparison, it is shown that the modeling techniques in this study can be well applied to the nonlinear failure analysis of reinforced concrete structures with porper modifications.
