  • Most of the real world phenomena change over time. The ability to represent and to reason geographic data becomes crucial. A large amount of non-standard applications are dealing with data characterized by spatial, temporal and/or uncertainty features. Non-standard data like spatial and temporal data have an inner complex structure requiring sophisticated data representation, and their operations necessitate sophisticated and efficient algorithms. Current GIS technology is inefficient to model and to handle complex geographic phenomena, which involve space, time and uncertainty dimensions. This paper concentrates on developing a fuzzy spatio-temporal data model based on fuzzy set theory and relational data models. Fuzzy spatio-temporal operators are also provided to support dynamic query.

Phonetic characteristics of Korean lax, fortis, and aspirated stops in apraxic patients (한국어 파열음에 나타나는 실행증 환자의 음성적 특성 연구)

  • This study examined the perception and production of Korean lax, fortis and aspirated stops in three apraxic patients. All of tile subjects made more production errors than perception errors. This indicates that apraxic patients have problems in phonetic execution rather than phonological representation. Additionally, in both production and perception, there were more errors in non-word-initial consonants than in word-initial consonants. These findings contradict those of the previous studies which report more errors in word-initial consonants. This study also found that, unlike previous studies in the types of errors made, distortion errors were high in both non-word-initial and word-initial consonants in apraxic patients. Generally, VOT of the stops showed significant differences among lax, fortis, and aspirated stops, which indicates that there is a failure not in choosing the appropriate stop but in positioning or motor planning at the articulation stage.

  • This paper describes the selective Boolean operations on non-manifold geometric models whose union and subtraction operations are communicative. These operations guarantee the same resulting shape in spite of change of the order of Boolean operations, and the integrity of the model for omission of some features. In addition, a B-rep model for a modified modeling history is obtained in a short time, as no boundary evaluation is necessary. These features enable easy implementation of multi-resolution representation of B-rep models.

  • The computational efficiency of an shape optimization procedure is highly dependent upon the proper selection of shape representation methods and design variables. In this study, shape functions, Bezier and NURBS(non-uniform rational B-splines) curves are selected as configuration generation methods and their efficiencies on the nose shape design of high-speed air vehicles, are compared. The effects of the number of control points, weighting factors and the optimization methods when utilizing the NURBS curves, are investigated. By implementing Bezier and NURBS curves, shapes having lower drag than the optimization case utilizing the shape functions, were obtained, hence it was demonstrated that these curves have better capability in representing the configuration. Efforts will be given to improve the convergence behavior when utilizing the NURBS, hence to reduce the number of Navier-Stokes analysis calculations.

  • An overview on applications of wavelet transform in power systems presented in this paper. Wavelet transform is capable of making trade-offs between time and frequency resolutions, which is a property that makes it appropriate for the analysis of non stationary signal. In recent years, wavelet transform is widely accepted as a technology offering an alternative way due to its flexibility in representation of non-stationary signal even in power systems. This paper presents various applications of wavelet transform in power systems. Wavelet transform has been used by the authors in the field of power system protection for the classification of transient signals, and forecasting of short term loads and system marginal price and so on. Various research works carried out by many researchers in power systems are summarized.

  • The auto-encoder network which is a good candidate to handle the modeling of the signal strength attenuation is designed for denoising and compensating the distortion of the received data. It provides a non-linear mapping function by iteratively learning the encoder and the decoder. The encoder is the non-linear mapping function, and the decoder demands accurate data reconstruction from the representation generated by the encoder. In addition, the adaptive network width which supports the automatic generation of new hidden nodes and pruning of inconsequential nodes is also implemented in the proposed algorithm for increasing the efficiency of the algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the neural network training surface to achieve the highest possible accuracy of the signal modeling compared with the conventional modeling method.

  • An improvement to the existing blind signal separation (BSS) method has been made in this paper. The proposed method models the inherent signal dependency observed in acoustic object to separate the real-world convolutive sound mixtures. The frequency domain approach requires solving the well known permutation problem, and the problem had been successfully solved by a vector representation of the sources whose multidimensional joint densities have a certain amount of dependency expressed by non-spherical distributions. Especially for speech signals, we observe strong dependencies across neighboring frequency bins and the decrease of those dependencies as the bins become far apart. The non-spherical joint density model proposed in this paper reflects this property of real-world speech signals. Experimental results show the improved performances over the spherical joint density representations.

  • Let K be a field and G be a group of its automorphisms. It follows from Speiser's generalization of Hilbert's Theorem 90, [10] that any K-semilinear representation of the group G is isomorphic to a direct sum of copies of K, if G is finite. In this note three examples of pairs (K, G) are presented such that certain irreducible K-semilinear representations of G admit a simple description: (i) with precompact G, (ii) K is a field of rational functions and G permutes the variables, (iii) K is a universal domain over field of characteristic zero and G its automorphism group. The example (iii) is new and it generalizes the principal result of [7].

  • The issues of compositionality, materialized ever since Frege (1982), are critically re-examined in language first mainly and then in all other possible representational systems such as thoughts, concept combination, computing, gesture, music, and animal cognition. The notion is regarded as necessary and suggested as neurologically correlated in humans, even if a weakened version is applicable because of non-articulated constituents and contextuality. Compositionality is crucially involved in all linguistically or non-linguistically meaningful expressions, dealing with at-issue content, default content, and even not-at-issue meanings such as implicatures and presuppositions in discourse. It is a constantly guiding principle to show the relation between representation and mind, still posing tantalizing research issues.

  • Various geometric modeling techniques for a hull have been developed with wide application of computer to the ship design. Up to now, they are used for the representation of the sculptured surface with the piecewise polynominal curves or surfaces for a conventional hull. In this paper, a convenient and accurate modeling technique that is instancing and blending of the geometry primitives is introduced for a non-conventional hull such as SWATH, trimaran, caisson etc. Geometric characteristics, hydrostatic particulars and stability of the definded hull are calculated.
