This paper focuses on the finite element (FE) response sensitivity and reliability analyses considering smooth constitutive material models. A reinforced concrete frame is modeled for FE sensitivity analysis followed by direct differentiation method under both static and dynamic load cases. Later, the reliability analysis is performed to predict the seismic behavior of the frame. Displacement sensitivity discontinuities are observed along the pseudo-time axis using non-smooth concrete and reinforcing steel model under quasi-static loading. However, the smooth materials show continuity in response sensitivity at elastic to plastic transition points. The normalized sensitivity results are also used to measure the relative importance of the material parameters on the structural responses. In FE reliability analysis, the influence of smoothness behavior of reinforcing steel is carefully noticed. More efficient and reasonable reliability estimation can be achieved by using smooth material model compare with bilinear material constitutive model.
In this study, the behavior of the coupled mooring system and floating body is analyzed. The related works are introduced for the mooring analysis of the floating body. Equations motion are introduced for calculating mooring force connected with the floating body. For formulating the equations of motion, the concept of the constrained force is applied for compact expression of it. The input and output data of the module for calculating mooring force is defined. The static analysis and quasi-static analysis are performed. For the analysis, equilibrium equation for elastic catenary mooring line is used by employing finite element method, and the C# solver is developed in this research. The analysis results are validated by comparing with other research results.
Beam-like structures such as bridge, high building and tower, pipes, flexible connecting rods and some robotic manipulators are often excited by support motions. These structures are important in machines and structures. So, this study proposes an analytic method to accurately predict the dynamic behaviors of the structures during support motions or an earthquake. Using Timoshenko beam theory which is valid even for non-slender beams and for high-frequency responses, the analytic responses of fixed-fixed beams subjected to a real seismic motions at supports are illustrated to show the principled approach to the proposed method. The responses of a slender beam obtained by using Timoshenko beam theory are compared with the solutions based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory to validate the correctness of the proposed method. The dynamic analysis for the fixed-fixed beam subjected to support motions gives useful information to develop an understanding of the structural behavior of the beam. The bending moment and the shear force of a slender beam are governed by dynamic components while those of a stocky beam are governed by static components. Especially, the maximal magnitudes of the bending moment and the shear force of the thick beam are proportional to the difference of support displacements and they are influenced by the seismic wave velocity.
A human sign language is generally composed of both static and dynamic gestures. Each gesture is represented by a hand shape, its position, and hand movement (for a dynamic gesture). One of the problems found in automated sign language translation is on segmenting a hand movement that is part of a transitional movement from one hand gesture to another. This transitional gesture conveys no meaning, but serves as a connecting period between two consecutive gestures. Based on the observation that many dynamic gestures as appeared in Thai sign language dictionary are of quasi-periodic nature, a method was developed to differentiate between a (meaningful) dynamic gesture and a transitional movement. However, there are some meaningful dynamic gestures that are of non-periodic nature. Those gestures cannot be distinguished from a transitional movement by using the signal quasi-periodicity. This paper proposes a hybrid method using a combination of the periodicity-based gesture segmentation method with a HMM-based gesture classifier. The HMM classifier is used here to detect dynamic signs of non-periodic nature. Combined with the periodic-based gesture segmentation method, this hybrid scheme can be used to identify segments of a transitional movement. In addition, due to the use of quasi-periodic nature of many dynamic sign gestures, dimensionality of the HMM part of the proposed method is significantly reduced, resulting in computational saving as compared with a standard HMM-based method. Through experiment with real measurement, the proposed method's recognition performance is reported.
From the analysis results of some as-built drawings in national roadway bridges in Korea, many bridge piers are expected to show complex shear-flexural behaviour under earthquakes. But the previous research works about the seismic evaluation of bridges considered flexural behaviour RC piers only. In addition, the past bridge design specifications in Korea didn't include limitation on the amount of longitudinal lap splices in the plastic hinge zone of piers. Thus a large majority of non-seismically designed bridge piers in Korea may have lap splices in plastic hinge zone. In this study, prototype pier was selected among existent bridge piers whose failure mode is expected to be complex shear-flexural mode. And then, full scale and 1/2 reduced scale model RC piers with various longitudinal lap splice details were constructed. From the quasi static test results on these model RC piers, the effect of longitudinal lap splices on the seismic performance of bridges piers was analyzed. And the seismic capacity of the non-seismically designed shear-flexural RC piers was evaluated.
In this paper, we theoretically analyzed the NRRO(the non-repeatable run-out) of a ball bearing with ball geometric imperfection. The quasi-static and dynamic analysis of a ball bearing was performed to calculate the displacement of shaft center caused by the ball form errors while the shaft is rotating. From consideration of the generating mechanism of NRRO, it is found that the size and form errors of ball generate vibrations with (equation omitted)$\_$c/ and n(equation omitted)$\_$b/${\pm}$(equation omitted)$\_$c/(where n is even) components, respectively. The ball form errors of a ball bearing were precisely measured and NRRO of a ball bearing was calculated using the measured data. A statistical approach was peformed to analyze NRRO of ball bearings with radial errors.
This paper proposes a systematic approach to the modeling of the small-signal characteristics of three-phase bridge boost rectifiers under non-sinusoidal conditions. The main obstacle to the conventional synchronous d-q frame modeling approach is that it is unable to identify a steady-state under non-sinusoidal conditions. However, for most applications under non-sinusoidal conditions, the current loops of boost rectifiers are designed to have a bandwidth that is much higher than typical harmonics frequencies in order to achieve good current control for these harmonic components. Therefore a quasi-static method is applied to the proposed modeling approach. The converter small-signal characteristics developed from conventional synchronous frame modeling under different operating points are investigated and a worst case point is then located for the current loop design. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are presented. It is observed that operating points influence the converter low frequency characteristics but hardly affect the dominant poles. The relationship between power stage parameters, system poles and zeroes is also presented which offers good support for the system design. Both the simulation and experimental results verified the analysis and proposed modeling approach. Finally, the practical case of a parallel active power filter is studied to present the modeling approach and the resultant regulator design procedure. The system performance further verifies the whole analysis.

Parametric and forced non-linear vibrations of an axially moving rotor both in non-resonance and near-resonance cases have been investigated analytically in this paper. The axial speed is assumed to involve a mean value along with small harmonic fluctuations. Hamilton's principle is employed for this gyroscopic system to derive three coupled non-linear equations of motion. Longitudinal inertia is neglected under the quasi-static stretch assumption and two integro-partial-differential equations are obtained. With introducing a complex variable, the equations of motion is presented in the form of a single, complex equation. The method of multiple scales is applied directly to the resulting equation and the approximate closed-form solution is obtained. Stability boundaries for the steady-state response are formulated and the frequency-response curves are drawn. A number of case studies are considered and the numerical simulations are presented to highlight the effects of system parameters on the linear and nonlinear natural frequencies, mode shapes, limit cycles and the frequency-response curves of the system.
The progressive collapse phenomenon is generally regarded as dynamic. Due to the impracticality of nonlinear dynamic computations for practitioners, an interest arises for the development of equivalent static pushover procedures. The present paper proposes a methodology to identify such a procedure for sudden column removals, using energetic evaluations to determine the pushover loads to apply. In a dynamic context, equality between the cumulated external and internal works indicates a vanishing kinetic energy. If such a state is reached, the structure is sometimes assumed able to withstand the column removal. Approximations of these works can be estimated using a static computation, leading to an estimate of the displacements at the zero kinetic energy configuration. In comparison with other available procedures based on such criteria, the present contribution identifies loading patterns to associate with the zero-kinetic energy criterion to avoid a single-degree-of-freedom idealisation. A parametric study over a family of regular steel structures of varying sizes uses non-linear dynamic computations to assess the proposed pushover loading pattern for the cases of central and lateral ground floor column failure. The identified quasi-static loading schemes are shown to allow detecting nearly all dynamically detected plastic hinges, so that the various beams are provided with sufficient resistance during the design process. A proper accuracy is obtained for the plastic rotations of the most plastified hinges almost independently of the design parameters (loads, geometry, robustness), indicating that the methodology could be extended to provide estimates of the required ductility for the beams, columns, and beam-column connections.

Non-ductile detailing of Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames may lead to structural failure when the structure is subjected to earthquake response. These designs are generally encountered in older RC frames constructed prior to the introduction of the ductility aspect. The failure observed in the beam-column joints (BCJs) and accompanied by excessive column damage. This work examines the seismic performance and failure mode of non-ductile designed RC columns and exterior BCJs. The design was based on the actual building in Tainan City, Taiwan, that collapsed due to the 2016 Meinong earthquake. Hence, an experimental investigation using cyclic testing was performed on two columns and two BCJ specimens scaled down to 50%. The experiment resulted in a poor response in both specimens. Excessive cracks and their propagation due to the incursion of the lateral loads could be observed close to the top and bottom of the specimens. Joint shear failure appeared in the joints. The ductility of the member was below the desired value of 4. This is the minimum number required to survive an earthquake with a similar magnitude to that of El Centro. The evidence provides an understanding of the seismic failure of poorly detailed RC frame structures.
