The least-squares formulation for rigid-plasticity based on J$_2$-flow rule and infinitesimal theory and its meshfree implementation using moving least-squares approximation are proposed. In the least-squares formulation the squared residuals of the constitutive and equilibrium equations are minimized. Those residuals are represented in a form of first-order differential system using the velocity and stress components as independent variables. For the enforcement of the boundary and frictional contact conditions, penalty scheme is employed. Also the reshaping of nodal supports is introduced to avoid the difficulties due to the severe local deformation near the contact interface. The proposed least-squares meshfree method does not require any structure of extrinsic cells during the whole process of analysis. Through some numerical examples of metal forming processes, the validity and effectiveness of the method are investigated.

In this paper, an effective procedure is presented for the local recovery of displacements and stresses in multilayered composite panels, which incorporate the local refinement using mesh superposition. The mesh superposition method is used to refine the global coarse mesh by superimposing refined mesh to the localized zone of interest without transition zones. The finite element model used is a solid element based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The a posteriori computation of the through-the-thickness distributions of displacements and stresses is achieved using a predictor-corrector procedure. The procedure utilizes the superconvergent stresses and nodal displacements of the finite element patch. The element patch is generated by locally superimposing a refined local mesh to the coarse global mesh.

In this paper, 2D SUB-3D STM approach for analysis and design of 3D structural concrete is presented. In the approach several 2D sub strut-tie models which are representations of compressive and tensile stress flows of each projected plane of 3D structural concrete are utilized in the sketch of a 3D strut-tie model, in the evaluation of effective strengths of compressive concrete struts, and in the verification of geometric compatibility and bearing capacity of critical nodal zones of 3D strut-tie model. To prove the validity and rationality of the suggested approach, the behavior and strength of a prestressed box girder diaphragm tested to failure are evaluated.

The characteristics on the extension of the CED(Crack Energy Density) concept to the interface kinked crack problems in a dissimilar are examined. Each mode contributions of CED are found by symmetric and antisymmetric conponents and domain independent integrals. Finite element calculation is carried out to simulate the interface kinked crack growth on a bimaterial. The focus is the establishment of fracture criterion with CED and finding the orientation of crack extension. From the results, a prediction about the extension behavior of an interface kinked crack can be done. And we show that CED can be a parameter to indicate fracture criterion at an interface kinked crack.

A novel 3D shape optimization algorithm is presented for electromagnetic devices carry-ing eddy current. The algorithm integrates the 3D finite element performance analysis and the steepest descent method with design sensitivity and mesh relocation method. For the design sensitivity formula, the adjoint variable vector is defined in complex form based on the 3D finite element method for eddy current problems. A new 3D mesh relocation method is also proposed using the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress to renew the mesh as the shape changes. The design sensitivity f3r the sur-face nodal points is also systematically converted into that for the design variables for the parameterized optimization application. The proposed algorithm is applied to the optimum design of the tank shield model of the transformer and the effectiveness is proved.

A finite element model for polarization switching in electro-mechanically coupled materials is proposed and applied to predict the switching behavior of a two-dimensional ferroelectric ceramic. A complicated micro-structure existing in the material is modeled as il continuum body and a simple 3 node triangle finite element with nodal displacement and voltage degrees of freedom is used for a finite element analysis. The elements use nonlinear constitutive equations, switching criterion and kinetic relation, fur representation of material response at strong electric and stress fields. The polarization state of the material is represented by internal variables in each element, which are updated at each simulation step based on the proposed constitutive equations. The model reproduces strain and electric displacement hysteresis loops observed in the material.

In the present paper, for a quantitative assessment of early-age cracking in an RC wall, an improved analytical model is proposed. First of all, a three-dimensional finite element model for the analysis of stresses due to hydration heat and differential drying shrinkage is introduced. A discrete steel element derived using the equivalent nodal force concept is used to simulate reinforcing steels, embedded in a concrete matrix. In advance, to quantitatively calculate the cracking potential, an analytical model that can estimate the post-cracking behavior in an RC tension member is proposed Subsequent comparisons. of analytical results with test results verify that the combined use of both the finite element model for the stress analysis as well as the analytical model for the estimation of the post-cracking behavior in an RC tension member make it possible to accurately predict the cracking ,behavior of RC walls.

This paper presents an analytical prediction of the prestress losses of prestressed concrete bridges. In this study a numerical procedure and computer program is developed to analyze the behavior of prestressed concrete bridges considering the time-dependent properties of material. It accounts for the aging, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressed steel. The structural model uses two dimensional plane frame elements with three nodal degree of freedom and is analyzed based on the finite element method. Member cross section can consist of concrete, reinforcement and prestressing steel. Two different set of equations for the prediction of time-dependent material properties of concrete are presented, which are ACI, CEB-FIP. The proposed numerical method for the prestress losses of prestressed concrete bridges is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

This paper presents a 3D shape optimization algorithm for electromagnetic devices using the design sensitivity analysis with finite element method. The structural deformation analysis based on the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress is used for mesh renewing. The design sensitivity and adjoint variable formulae are derived for the 3D finite element method with edge element. The results of sensitivity analysis are used as the input data of the structural analysis to calculate the relocation of the nodal points. This method makes it possible that the new mesh of analysis region can be obtained from the initial mesh without regeneration. The proposed algorithm is applied to the shape optimization of 3D electromagnet pole to net a uniform flux density at the target region.

A moment-curvature relationship to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns under cyclic loading is introduced. Unlike previous moment4curvature models and the layered section approach, the proposed model takes into account the bond-slip effect by using a monotonic moment-curvature relationship constructed on the basis of the bond-slip relation and corresponding equilibrium equation at each nodal point. In addition, the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel gives more exact numerical result. The pinching effect caused by axial force is considered with an assumption that the absorbing energy corresponding to any deformation level maintains constant regardless of the magnitude of applied axial lone. The advantages of the proposed model, comparing to layered section approach, may be on the reduction in calculation time and memory space in case of its application to large structures. Finally, correlation studies between analytical result and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.
